    Tip to prevent the chopsticks squishing together on your first set of passes: tie a bit of rope around the other ends of the chopsticks on the other side of the cardboard. That way they will stay in shape better on the end where you're making the monkeys fist.

    taught myself ho to make these before the internet was a thing. I used 1/8" nylon rope and a 1/2" wooden bead (ball). I also had a crush on a girl who played volleyball and the obvious resemblance to a volleyball inspired me to make them for her whole team s keychains so she wouldnt suspect I liked her! Good times!

      ...Said the people willing to waste 5 mins before ANYTHING about how to wrap. Gotta go find chopsticks and make small holes, and do another hole and push and then one more chopstick and struggle to make the jig. Blah..Blah..Blah..now we have a geto jig made of chopsticks. Yawn. Got here lookin for this dude who had a 2min monkeyfist (3 or 4 wrap) and it was simple. Cant find it. Found chatty cathy here and 5mins before the actual fisting starts.

      Tree Surgeons I hired to take down 30 trees too close to my home used one of these to pull the tops of the trees. In the direction they wanted the tree to fall after the initial cut was made. A strap with a good size hand ratchet was used to tighten the cord. It was not para cord but a super strong braided type of cord. It was cool to watch him get it perfectly into the top of the tree on one try !

    Very awesome! One note I had is that if you're making a one-time jig, you may want to pull the chopsticks or skewers out the other direction so you're not forcing the large end through. However, perfect as always! Thanks for posting!
    Also, this answers a question by raising another one. What does it do to compress the wraps with, say, one extra wrap on all sides (8 as opposed to 7). Would it strengthen the knot or just get in the way?

    • @striker8paints
      @striker8paints 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using more wraps than called for the core size you're using usually ends up with it getting bunched up and lumpy along with adding that much more work dressing and evening out the tails.
      I found a nice chart online that gives the suggested number of wraps for common core and cord sizes. After doing a dozen or so monkeys fists from 3/4 to 1 1/2 with para cord and cheap cloths line using the chart gave me nice tight smooth knots. it's been a few years and I don't remember where I found it though.

    I'm currently working on getting the supplies together for a REALLY BIG Monkeys fist. I picked up a bowling ball at Goodwill for $6. It's not that heavy, maybe 10 or 15 pounds-ish. The wife is pretty small and she can pick it up no problem. I'm currently working out what size cordage I'm going to use to make it look right. I'm rather excited about this one. 😁😆😆

    Great video. Two quick questions. Why did you work the knot off the big end of the sticks? Wouldn't it be easier to pull them though and then off the points?
    Secondly if you used a band to hold the wrong end of the sticks together, thus preventing them from distorting the shape would this cause problems with the knot in the end?

I want to make my kittens some hanging type toys using the monkeys fist. I thought that the rope that is commonly used for clothes lines would be good for this. Of course any suggestions you may have would be most welcome.

    • @michael.f2412
      @michael.f2412 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nancy Savage if you hang it and make it with something absorbant like paracord or some type of rope that absorbs get a small spray bottle and put some catnip in the bottle about a quarter full then fill the rest with water shake for about 3 minutes and spray it onto the monkeys fist or just try this with any toys for cats they will be amused for hours

      Linda Allen he is basically reversing the weave. He wanted to take up some extra length from his "tail" cord, so he carefully followed the cording back, pushing and tightening as he went, essentially retracing the weave from beginning to end. It really helps to keep the wraps flat and somewhat snug together during the initial wrapping so that the "cords" don't overlap and twist - just as he demonstrated at several points during the video.

      Malkhut hinds-bernard well yeah, you can injure someone with it... but since in watch dogs 2, he was using an 8 ball which is heavy, it can kill someone if you bash them in the back of the head or maybe in front

      Malkhut hinds-bernard they have also been used to belay lines between sea vessels any time ships (think wood and sails here not modern ships) needed to be lashed together. They added weight to the end of the line so it could be thrown further.

    Could you use yarn

      @TheWeaversofEternity 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could, but it won't be exactly the same. Also yarn would probably move around a lot.

      Crystal Cantrell tried it. I'll tell you it's not fun. You could make it thicker and easier by braiding..
