It also makes sense from a certain point of view. There’s a lot of minor gods (kami) in Asian folklore, often of a singular object like a mountain or rock, so it would make sense if Popo was one of them.
Oftentimes the only difference between kami and yōkai is the latter tend to be more benevolent.

Or even Goku dying for the first time and Krillin and Chaotzu the second time, which would have meant they could not have come back under the old limitations. I honestly didn't know that the accent of Goku and Chichi was the same, because it's something that cannot be portrayed or shown as easily in the Spanish editions. I only knew Goku has accent when I started buying and reading Dragon Ball Super in English. However, the two hints I got for me to guess that the mysterious fighter was Chichi were first, the unfulfilled promise she kept talking about, and secondly, that her fighting style resembled that of the turtle school, as mentioned by Roshi. Which is brilliant because Gyūmaō (Ox-King/Ox-Satan) is the only one who could've taught her.

    • @trevinodude

Yeah. That’s what clued me in as well when I first watched Goku vs Chi Chi via the English dubbed anime. When Master Roshi mentioned her movements being of the Turtle School, I was like “No way…” I had never seen Z at that point so I had no idea and when Roshi said that I instantly remembered Fire Mountain where Ox King said he trained alongside Grandpa Gohan as a student of Roshi’s.

The Piccolo vs Krillen fight also lays the ground work for their relationship in Z. Those two worked alot together in Z and Krillen was always someone who Piccolo respected and trusted in. This arc is the arc that what makes me hail Dragon Ball as a legendary series. Not only that but it’s why to this day, Goku is my favorite character in all of fiction since I was a kid. Everything you mentioned in this video surmises that feeling greatly and I can not thank you enough.
You didn’t touch on this, but another thing that makes Goku’s victory over Piccolo Jr. so satisfying and epic is in that moment it’s revealed that he fucking FLEW. And I love how ambiguous it’s left as to if he learned it while training with Kami or just by observation similarly to how he learned the Kamehameha in an instant. It’s such an amazing moment in both the manga and the anime, but there’s also something symbolic about it that gets me emotional and represents Goku’s growth in the series in just a simple yet effective moment.
And the sheer amount of confidence Goku displays throughout the entire arc as a fighter just feels so inspiring. I have no idea how to describe it. Fucking love Dragon Ball forever.

At 18:00 when you talked about Krillin growing, I really thought about how he reacted when he reunited with Goku.
When the group meets up, they all kinda talk about how much taller Krillin has gotten since they last met. And Krillin eats it up. Then when Goku is revealed and they see just how much taller Goku has gotten compared to Krillin, instead of focusing on that or even making a gag out of it, Krillin goes straight to embrace his old friend.

Krillin was practically Piccolo's wingman in the Saiyan saga, the two of them understood each other perfectly and managed to fight off a much stronger opponent for quite some time, both of them delivering some decent attacks, coming up with strategies etc. They fought as a team, which is quite rare in Dragon ball.

One thing that i think deserves to be mentioned is how Shen resembles Jackie Chun both through similarities as well as contrasts/opposites which i imagine had to have been intentional on behalf of Toriyama.
Both are really strong fighters hiding their identity through a visual disguise. Both fight with a variety of styles, starting out on the more silly side of things untill they get pushed and have to get serious. And they each have a fight with Yamcha in the quarter finals that have a similar structure to each other.
Taking a look at their designs next, i think they visually share a somewhat similar silhouette but once you get into the details, thats where you start to see the opposites.
Shen has black hair where Jackie Chun has white hair. Shen has glasses where Chun has none. Shen has a moustache where as Chun has a full on beard. Shen's primary color is white with accents of black and Chun's primary color is black with accents of white.
I think i might've had some more to say but i don't currently remember it so i'll leave it at this for now.

I feel this is more Toriyama being unable to branch away from initial dynamics between two archetypes. He does this consistently with all teacher/student relationships in addition to rival, romantic, etc ones. They all play out similarly. If it were a one or two time occurrence, then yes perhaps clever paralleling. But when its the same every time it comes across as a weakness of the writer (or laziness).

I wish dragon ball had continued like that as a martial arts mystical adventure. As much as I love dbz, the power lever thing became kinda repetitive. And now with super you can tell the flaws of the “goku and vegeta” centric arcs where vegeta seems to get stronger but never strong enough for the newer bad guy. And goku comes to save the day. And all the old characters are arguably forgotten. I miss the grounded style of DB. Where finding the dragon balls was a difficult task and the goal!

    • @JackgarPrime
      @JackgarPrime ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is why I thought at least the concept of GT was very strong. The characters are at a point where a global journey is trivial for them, but a universe-traveling adventure with a ticking clock element, going to all sorts of crazy planets? Fantastic concept to come back to. The execution leaved a lot to be desired, but I think on paper it was a great plan. Same with stuff like Super Saiyan 4 and the Shadow Dragons. Well, Super Saiyan 4 was cool in execution, too. And actually Baby was quite strong both in concept and execution, as well. But the search for the Black Star Dragon Balls itself had more misses than hits.

This is one of my favorite arcs in Dragonball. Everyone always points to the arrival of Raditz and the introduction of Gohan as the point where the series changes permanently, and while that is true in a lot of aspects truly this arc sets all of that up. The sweet chubby little kid we met all those chapters ago is now a tall muscular man. Our cast has grown up, all physical and also mentally. The fights have become even more intense and the plot more focused. Even stuff like Goku being an alien is introduced by us having to question the lineage of Piccolo and Kami when Kami starts speaking a different language. And then there’s the flight. What is perhaps the most iconic piece of the franchise moving forward, the high flying conflicts in the air it truly starts here. And with KRILLIN no less. When Krillin took to the air against Piccolo for the first time, only to have Goku adopt the technique at the last moment to secure the win against Piccolo. It may not be as flashy a win as a giant Kamehameha or a spirit bomb but MAN is that one one of the best. Even though the series put so much time to show us how impressive Goku is it still also shows us how his friends are still inspiring him and encouraging him to grow. I truly love this part of the series. Along with the Red Ribbon arc these are my favorite pieces of all of Dragonball. It is such a shame that so many fans out here in the west will never be exposed to this half of the series.

Mark… I kid you not… you legit made me cry emotional, nostalgic tears. For some context: I’ve been a Dragon Ball fan since I was a kid, my dad introduced me to the series and we started with the original Dragon Ball anime. I’ve since revisited DB and DBZ many times, even giving Kai a shot (I rather liked it) and last year, I started a rewatch of the Dragon Ball franchise, starting with the original DB anime… and I once again I was hooked to young Goku’s adventures all over again. A few months ago I subscribed to the Shonen Jump app and started to read the original Dragon Ball manga for the first time ever, I’m currently in the King Piccolo saga, and as much as I love the anime… there is just something special about experiencing the series in it’s original form, drawn and written by Akira Toriyama (albeit translated into English) and I felt like I had rediscovered my love of the original DB all over again… again… so when you started these reviews, I was curious about what you’d say… and you basically managed to sum up, into words why I love the original DB so much. I mean Z is great… but DB is a much better story with a conclusion that has everything great about the series as a whole packed right into it. DBZ will always be one of my favorite series with Super Saiyans, bombastic battles, and the amazing rivalry between Goku and Vegeta… but DB surpasses it in terms of comedy, philosophy, and storytelling. Both DB and DBZ is amazing, so it’s so sad to see DB got get the respect it deserves amongst the fan base.

    Thank you for making these.
The idea of this being a three-act storyline with the tournament is a clever idea. I think though, the first tourment is still my favorite. This one had much better well rounded fights, but I miss that feeling of mystery and not knowing everyone. I also miss the big monsters we saw at the begging like the bear or Giran. Also, the plot with Namu meant a lot since this was a good guy, trying to do good and not connect with out heroes. I do feel like Goku telling us not to worry made some of the fights kind blah. It is sad to see these chapter close out but there are big things coming. Thanks again.

The Piccolo Jr. saga is not only arguably the best arc of ALL of Dragon Ball (including Z, etc.), but I feel that it is Goku's shining moment as a character (along with the Saiyan and Frieza sagas). Here, he's grown in height and in wisdom and acute awareness. The fights retain the aesthetic of early Dragon Ball (yet are more dynamic due to characters like Goku being much taller and leaner) while introducing the flashier elements of Z. The pacing is tight, and suspense is felt on every panel. Piccolo Jr. was chilling and a formidable opponent, yet some of the traits that made his eventual redemption imminent are present. Everyone, even those who don't advance like Yamcha, get their chance to shine here. I could wax on and on about this saga.

I love how there's a natural progression from the 21st to the 23rd tournament. Sandwiched between each tournament are the Red Ribbon Army and King Piccolo arcs, which serve to develop the characters' narratives for the proceeding tournaments. With each tournament the stakes are higher, culminating in Goku eventually becoming the winner of the 23rd tournament. The relevance of each tournament and its consequences are on par with the physical destruction involved. First, giant ape Goku knocks down a few buildings. Next, Tien destroys the arena. Finally, Piccolo obliterates the entire island.
