Don't be fooled by the simplicity of the Biot Nymph

  • This mayfly nymph follows the standard template of: fiber tail, thin body, thicker thorax, fiber legs and wingcase. But don't let this simplicity fool you. This standard can imitate any number of bugs by varying the size or color.
    Hook: #12-18 1x long, 1x strong
    Tail: Pheasant tail fibers
    Body: Goose biot (color of your choice)
    Thorax: Fur dubbing
    Wingcase: Pheasant tail fibers
    Legs: Partridge

    Another great teaching vid Matt 👍I've used biots for things like tails, but never for an abdomen on a nymph. 🤔Don't know why. But the way you did the legs is the method I use a lot. I got that technique from Eric Leiser's Complete Book of Fly Tying. He credits salmon fly tyers like Charles DeFeo with the method. That's an excellent "how to" book on tying that you should do a review on - if you haven't already. I learned the basics and many techniques on many styles of flies from that book years ago when I found the hard cover book at the Economy Bookstore back in the 70's. I also have the $25 second edition. Anyway, this past week I've seen a few small 3/4" katydids on the back porch. Some were dead, some alive. The next few days I see wasps carrying them away, their version of take out fast food 🤭 Then one night I'm out there on the porch, light on, and this big 4 winged bug slams into me! 😱I went back in the house. Next morning there's a big 2+ inch katydid on the porch wall. Very cool looking bug! First thing I thought of was your mini matuka! The wing feathers on that fly matched perfectly the color and shape of the katydid wing and profile! Last night was very hot and muggy, like most of the days/nights the past 3 or 4 weeks. Well the katydids started their deafening chorus of "Katy-did, Katy-didn't" Amazing! Another one was on the porch wall and I watched it's wings tremble as it sang it's song. Yeah, I'm a bug nerd 🤓👍Thanks Matt!

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great story Joe! I do indeed have that book. I may just have to add it to my to-do stack, that as I turn over and look on my shelf is already five books. Ugh... I need to get busy! But I've been having too much fun fishing on the weekends to do extra videos. :-) And get this, I'm just learning of a pretty fervent group of snakehead kayak fishermen down here in southern Maryland. I'm a 3-wt rod trout fisherman and these guys are throwing some serious meat with 10-wt rods. But it looks pretty damn fun! As for that partridge feather method, I can't remember where I learned it but it might have been Jim Misiura on his channel. Or Barry. Who knows.
      Now for caddis-green colored katydids... I can see that! I can't recall ever seeing a katydid fly pattern though. As for being a bug nerd... me too. I had a juvenile praying mantis come through my sunroof and land on my shirt the other day. Literally about an inch long. Cute little critter. :-)
