Dennis Rodman Defense on Michael Jordan - 1990 NBA ECF

  • DPOY Dennis Rodman defended Jordan for extended stretches in Games 1-3-4 of the 1990 ECF, but not as much in the other games. Rodman had occasional success defending Jordan with off-ball denial, physicality, and his length. For the most part, however, Jordan bested Rodman's defense and often made shots or drew fouls against Dennis. Coincidentally, Games 1-3-4 were also Jordan's 3 highest-scoring games in the series. Perhaps Chuck Daly saw something in the matchup that didn't favor Rodman and decided to limit his time guarding Jordan afterwards. Rodman did also have a minor ankle injury in the later games of the series that could have also affected the amount of time he spent guarding Jordan. However, it wasn't until Game 3 of the NBA Finals against Portland that Rodman had to sit out because of his ankle injury.

Rodman's story is actually cool. Dude was like 5'10 when he graduated high school. Rode the bench the entire time, couldn't hit a layup. When he graduated he went to work at the Dallas airport. All of a sudden, at 21 years old, dude has a ridiculous growth spurt and grows 8 inches in less than a year. Rodman said he felt odd in his own body after that, but decided it was probably a good idea to try basketball again. So at 22 years old he enrolled in college and the rest is history.

Why do people say that early 2000s was a better defensive era than the 1990s? Because I think the late 1990s was the best defensive era due to the sub-90ppg defenses and the players not having the best scoring numbers. Because in the 2000s, the 90s players saw an increase in scoring and assist output.

It's why Jordan is the goat. Averaging over 30 points per game and look at him getting his as$ kicked out there on a routine basis. These Piston's have to one of the toughest defenses ever to play.

I just watched a video of a guy breaking down when the no hand check rule was removed in the 94 95 season but wasn't really inforced until 2004 and even before that you could use your elbow to check people in the post

Partial limitations of hand-checking were added over time in 1994/95, 1999/00, and 2000/01, but 2004/05 was the year physical contact and hand-checking was really taken out for the most part.
_Asked if the Pistons will be allowed to play the same kind of physical defense, (Chauncey) Billups said: "No way. They put in all those rules, like the hand check, after we won the championship two years ago playing defense. Nobody wanted to see a defensive team in the Finals and winning._
