I think IT is for problem solvers and people thinking outside of the box. You don't need to be a total nerd you need to be curious, logical and creative, if you are helpful or people person it's a big plus. BEST IT people do NOT always have or started with a crazy passion for computers. Some people have passion for solving and creating something bigger something helpful meaningful and are passionate about learning new things... exceeding at those things.. and they are all insanely curious and that is what keeps them going :) ... Remember that for most of curious people passion comes with doing something well and getting better at it, discovering something every day , so don't give up!
Absolutely! I couldn't agree with your comment more. There is a belief that if your not passionate about something you shouldn't do it. Thousands upon thousands of people do not know their passion, that doesn't mean they shouldn't try for a good job.
What if I'm already 40 years old. I still have passion, interest to IT technologies, I'm curious. Also, I'm willing to learn,work hard, my memory works good but the same time lack of logical thinking and creative mind. I tend to follow instructions all the time seriously. So, what to do then ? Is there any point to get into IT field in this case, at my age ? Is there specialty in IT field for people like me ?
It's always easy to tell people to follow their passion when your passion has money in it. Most of us don't have that luxury. I want a job in IT to finance my passion
So basically be willing to learn. I have life experience and having passion is not a requirement to he good at something. Many doctors, scientists, and lawyers do not feel passionate about their jobs. Having a robust mind and good attitude seem like a good aptitude for IT.

The Medical field pays more than IT. Become a doctor, RN, or other positions, which pay a lot more. Don't go into IT for the money, because many IT jobs today pay like shit.
I'm passionate about art. I'm even more passionate about writing my novels enough to learn to publish as a one man team. But that doesn't pay. I can't bank on it. :( I never had access to computers until later in life, graduating high school in 2005. Got a BA of Studio Art. what i love about computers is just how much you can apply into them. what you can make and do and how you tell it to act. but the greatest thing i like about it the most is just how easy you can run into problems if you aren't careful. you can stay up nights trying to find the issue and address it as you grow more and more frustrated. this is by far the best part because at this point many people turn around and say "i have had enough of technology!" It pushes me to the limits where you either bend or break and i choose to bend. its almost like life, you are faced with many challenges but you never stop where you are because the world doesnt wait for you.
your talk about being passionate about computer rather then just liking computers really helped me. my dad is a mechanic to and I was really weighing out what to do. and listing to this really helped me decide to take the next step. Thank you!
honestly, if I was able to make a living in my country with a degree in Music or History....I would go for it. But sadly I can't that is why I got into IT.!! I like computers, but damn, I will be (as you say in the video) studying and learning all my life!

meh, just keep digging about certain aspects about it to develop a passion. I work with autistic kids. i have no passion with children. but i found immense interest in ABA therapy and the techniques used to provide education and help autistic children learn new skills. I've learned I enjoy the learning techniques, applying them, and seeing the results. I feel that can translate to IT, in the right aspect. I've started to learn Python coding to test my knowledge with codes and such. it's hard, but it's fun when i interact with other coders, challenging myself to find bugs more experience coders put out, and even thinking of ways codes are applied.

I’m 30 years old and still not sure what I’m passionate about. I’ve worked in sweatshops and sweated my ass off doing grunt work, hated it. I really enjoyed working in retail and helping customers, but the pay wasn’t enough to survive on. I work in healthcare now as a surgical tech, the pay is very nice, but doctors and nurses aren’t always the easiest people to work with. They will literally drive you to drinking. I consider myself a people person, but it seems like when other people hate their job, it will make you question yours. I’ve always been a team player, but when other people are constantly nagging and complaining, it ruins team chemistry. I’m confident I will find my passion eventually, but it’s a frustrating task my friend. I’m just going to call it “Life”.
Great info! My son feels that Cyber Security isn't his "thing". He's always educating himself with IT, building computers, trouble shooting issues and finding solutions for his own personal and friends computers. He's leaning towards changing his major to IT. Glad to hear from you, one in the field for years, that volunteering in that field will set him apart. Same recommendation and advice I'm giving him.

I have always loved computers since a very young age, and have even worked some cool jobs due to my computer knowledge, but I am finding more and more now that jobs are wanting the applicants to have a Bachelor's degree and they do not even care in what. This is why I have decided to go back to school and of course since I love computers, I have of course chosen to get a BS in IT. I am glad I found your channel, because I know I will need a lot of the information you have here. I think that if I can apply a lot of this non-academically acquired real life experience you have here to my assignments and practicals, I will do very well and will be better prepared when I really enter the field fully. Video helped a lot in helping decide IT was definitely for me. Always been really passionate for computers ever since I was kid playing Roller Coaster Tycoon. Something that everyone in this comment section needs to realize, even if he has experience in the field ultimately what he is saying is only one person's opinion. That's not discounting his opinion or saying he's right or wrong, it's just what we have to keep that in perspective. 10 people can go through the exact same experience and have 10 completely different outlooks and takes on it. I see this so much in youtube comment sections with anyone who makes videos representing any field. People take their word as absolute/the word of god and forget at the end of the day that it's just one person's perspective.

Watching this video well on my way to finishing an IT bachelor's degree. My high school counselor was floundered when I told her I wanted to go into IT because she felt it was a waste of my social skills! Glad to hear I'm going on the right path. For what it's worth, I'm 21. I will say, I think a college degree is becoming more important in this field as more people find their way into it. It's becoming necessary to see that a potential employee has the acumen and persistence to be able to get through college. I used to do martial arts and one of my head instructors was a higher-up in Information Systems at IBM. He told me that, when I had finished my degree, he'd find an open spot for me to fill in under his wing. He impressed upon me that the degree was important, which I don't think was as big of a deal in 1999 - even to 2010/11/12/whenever you got your job - because there were fewer people who cared to learn about the intricacies of data comms or how to replace a hard drive and reformat an OS.

One of my friends (who works in IT) suggested IT to me as a path but this video solidified my decision. I’ve worked retail for 5 years and have been told I have good customer service skills that I didn’t have before working this job (with a few racist bad apples that I’ve learned to handle professionally). I’m only awkward at first if they seem stone-faced or not willing to talk (or y’know, call me a racial slur...I’ve had a lotta bad experience with that🙃). I appreciate it bub. I'm going to OSUIT, and that is the one thing that appeals to me. The ever changing market with the IT department, plus the expansion of new technology, seemingly every other week, it is a great career investment, and will continue to grow. I love the fact that the situation can and will change, especially since the interfaces, both in software and hardware are in the early stages of development, which helps with the advancements while not only working, but also stimulates the body and mind while finding ways to improve.
This is informal, but sadly it's too truthful about my current issue and that is I have no passion for computer programming and IT ... yet, for some reason, a part of me still says: "WELL YOU BARELY TRY IT! A PASSION WILL COME IF YOU TRY IT!" I don't know, but is that normal? I mean I love what computers do, but I still don't know enough and the only programming I maybe passionate for is web designing, yet it's so difficult to find work and ... I don't know, I feel burnt out about it.
You don't necessarily need to be truly passionate about the field to work in it. But it definitely helps A LOT. I first started doing web development and I thought I loved it...I started doing non-web development I.T. things and I found that I was extremely passionate about it. It's different for everyone. Having a passion for something just makes it easier.

I have to say something here because this video is great and your doing a great service informing young people about IT. There's many fields of IT that you can work in and those fields requiere diferent people skills. You can do tech support or server support and in those you will be solving problems and interacting with a team. Most of the time you have to talk to people. The other field that exist in IT is software development or web development. The thing you have to remember is you have to be good learning programming languages and bening good at math. No so much at bening good at math but being able to solve problems.
I have recently decided to go into the IT field. I have had a passion for computers and problem solving and I do feel a passion for this field. I Just finished my basics at my local community college and plan to go get my bachelors in CIS. I will be going off to the university this fall. I personally feel I need/want a degree and formal education to have a better foundation in this field. I plan to go for certifications latter on as well. I really have been enjoying your videos and they have helped me feel reassured that this is a field I want to work in! Keep up the great videos :D

think about it, you can't get most jobs out there just with a degree because you'll have no experience, unless they train you or you come out of a trade/vocational school and are certified in something (which is overlooked a lot by universities as the only route after high school but isn't)
I notice most require 1+ years of experience. How did you get a job to help you gain your experience? Just hope you get lucky and someone hires you based on your interest?
shanzpro It's not too hard to gather some general knowledge about computers etc., just have a talk with a friend or the nerd from your school, and when you reach a set level, you are gonna be teaching the rest yourself.
If you want to be involved in working with video games, then I would look into Computer Science because that's one of the only curriculum where you could learn how to develop video games. IT isn't going to teach you that very much.
shanz Loving gaming and actually working on one is totally different. Are you willing working 100+ hours a week in programming or graphic designing during crunch time?
Don't pursue gaming. I got an associates degree in game design and now I'm not even interested in the industry anymore after meeting people in the field who have shared horror stories.
Great video, starting with the first question about being being passionate about it to the last point about sociability and customer service - that's one thing I will definitely need to build over the next few years. I love technology so much, and I've always watched youtube videos and reviews of every new device that comes out, be it new CPUs, or other hardware components. I've always been extremely interested in mobile devices, from when device manufacturers wouldn't even list the CPU frequency because it didn't matter when paired with 64MB RAM. There was almost like a boom in 2009/2010 when android devices had somewhat caught up with the iPhone. The transitions from resistive to capacative touch, the leaps from normal resolution to high definition and the advancement of single-core to dual-core to quad-core CPUs - it was an incredible time for me and there was an unbeleivable passion. Now it seems we have kind of hit a plateau, but I'm sure that will come back because there are always other new technologies like wearables and VR that that continue to evolve. Technology is truly amazing, it never stops and is arguably exponential in its evolution - very very exciting.
Look up technology companies and watch their youtube channels. You might be surprised what you learn. Great video man, your point on CS is a huge deal.
I agree with everything in this video. Passion is #1 and being able to communicate with others is #2. If I knew what I know now back when I was first starting out my life would've been very different. For starters, I would not have gone to college. My 4 year degree didn't help me get jobs as much as I thought it would. It basically helped with HR screening resumes and even then I'd constantly get passed up by people with more job experience while I was first starting out. I had vocational school in high school, I should have just stuck with that and got a job at a school district or some other place to start out with. Also I want to bring up student loan debt. I'm very fortunate in having paid mine off, however, it's only been about 10 years since I graduated and since then it's gotten tons more expensive to where it's something that I'd recommend not doing unless you absolutely need to in order to get into IT so it really depends on what career you want in IT. In my case I'm the Network Admin at my work place. I manage Windows servers, Linux servers, routers, firewalls, switches, etc. There's very little that I learned in college that I wouldn't have learned in the field, online, and from numerous computer books (yes they still exist). It basically amounted to getting a jump start on problem solving skills, a jump start on some programming skills, a jump start on technical knowledge, and technical writing (like how to write manuals and other forms of documentation) which is about the only thing that was unique about it. I didn't need biology, or calculus, or history to be able to do the job. That being said I'm glad for my college experience as it did help me grow as a person and while things like biology, and history have no career relevance what so ever, they did help me become a little more rounded and it did help a little in relating to non-technical people, but only a little. I got the bulk of my communication skills by fixing PCs for people and also working at a gas station in high school to save up money for college. The rest I figured out as I went along on the job, but being good at communication was really important. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for good communication skills. I wouldn't consider my college years to be complete waist because for me they were a great experience, but the resulting student loan debt crippled what I could afford to do with my life afterwards. It took me 10 long years after college and not being able to do much with my life to finally pay off my student loans. Given how they've held me back in life, I would not have gone to college to be a network admin and now 10 years latter, I really would not advise anyone to do so either. I had a few months of deciding whether to pay the rent on my apartment or sending a loan payment while having to go to my parents house to eat because money was too tight and it was just me living alone without a family. College is LOT more expensive now than it was 10 years ago. I welcome anyone into the world of IT if they have the passion and drive for it, but if you can avoid college, do it because the student loan debt is going to be bad when you get out and bankruptcy does not get rid it. Unlike any other debt, student loan debt is with you for the rest of your life unless you pay it off. You may luck out and find a vocational school to help get you the basics and save yourself a ton of money. Otherwise, start learning on your own if you haven't done so already. You're going to be learning on your own after school anyway so you may as well start now. Then start getting those temp jobs to build the experience and go up from there.
+gwgux If I could give your reply a million thumbs up, I would totally do it. Thank you so much for this comment because it really provides a completely different aspect of School VS. Experience that I did not shed light on(and have not shed light on yet) in an of my videos. Many people will argue with you on going to school or not going to school, currently I work with two system administrators that did not go to college and they are some very smart fella's, so it really goes to show you that sometimes experience far outweighs the benefits of having a degree. Now on the other hand I've actually been turned down two jobs because I did NOT go to college. One common tip that I would recommend to anyone that gets turned down from a job is to ask(if they don't tell you) why you were turned down from the job. This may be a little awkward but this will at least give you some insight on what potential employers are looking for. All in all this really can go both ways for sure, but I'm very thankful for your comment because it's extremely refreshing to receive some input on someone who attended college and their thoughts about it. Congratulations on how far you have come and I'm glad you are now out of debt. Keep on nerding!!

Not everyone is going to tell you why especially if you never get past the HR screening process that only looks at resume keywords, but it also goes hand in hand with doing the follow up contact with them after your interview. When I was interviewing I'd normally wait a week after the interview and then do a follow up contact with them if I hadn't heard back. It's a good way to remind them that you still exist and that you're still interested, and if they tell you that they decided on someone else, you're already in a dialog with them making it easier to ask why you were not chosen for it. The college thing does go both ways. Part of the problem is that most job postings I've seen require at least an associates degree even though the job does not require it. I can't tell you how many times I've seen jobs for ENTRY LEVEL help desk call centers where their job is to tell you to reboot the computer that requires at least a 2 year degree. It's asinine. My advice: work while in school! I was lucky enough to be in a college where they hired students for the help desk to help other students with their computers for things like cleaning out viruses, troubleshooting Internet connections and the like. If you're lucky enough to find something like that because it's easier to work around your class schedule, do it. It's work experience you can use on the resume after college. I can honestly say that my 4 years in college did help me with that screening process and it did help me get to the interviews. However, it was my experience that landed me jobs more so than the degree and working while in college helped after college. Also some jobs don't offer advancement without a college degree. In the end it's really a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation due to stagnant wages and high student loan debt. The trick is to find something you want to do in IT and then figure out the cheapest way to get there and as I mentioned in my last comment, it really depends on what you want to do in IT as that'll change what you have to look at to find that balance. Back when I was first starting out I could've avoided college. Today if I was just starting out, probably not because of asinine HR screening, but there are some jobs out there that'll give you a chance. They're just not as easy to find. You're most likely going to be doing temp jobs to build experience to offset not having that degree depending on what you want to do. Oh and networking (as in people not computer networks :P) while doing the temp jobs helps too. Some temp jobs lead to permanent jobs and sometimes you can meet people who might be able to hand your resume in to a manager they know to allow you to avoid the asinine HR screening process. I also wouldn't expect a permanent job right after college (if one goes that route) either. Temp jobs may be all a newbie will get in some cases, but to those people I'd stress that it's OK to work temp jobs because it's builds that experience you need on the resume (even if you don't learn much from those jobs themselves) to allow you get better jobs later.
I didint find my passion for computers until now (senior year of high school) I was interested in computers per say but I never had a passion for them so I never had a drive to learn how to do some things, but this year I’m not sure what made me change but my mind set is just different and I’ve wanted to actually learn everything there is about computers because it’s fun for me, also finally built my first computer last week (keep in mind I’ve been in a IT pathway at school since sophomore year) Also I’m in a help desk internship for my school it’s been a good experience so far

I love computers! I taught myself how to build and fix my own all through the power of the internet. At the rightful age of 33 I decided to get back to school and I chose IT. I am extremely excited to learn further however I have concerns that I won't know enough. I guess there is a fear of looking like an idiot but I have the wonderful ability of not being able to give up until the job is done. I work in a factory and I often get asked to troubleshoot heavy equipment yet it doesn't give the superhero sensation that you get when your boss or coworkers call on you to fix their computers! You are on spot by saying you have to passionate about computers. Even though I worry whether I will have the knowledge to be competent I won't hesitate to put my head down and go because I am going to get there.😀

I have just recently got my associates in computer information systems and was really worried about not having any certifications yet and can't go back for my bachelor's. this gave me a little hope lol cause I've always been passionate about it. just no certification and no experience at this time :/ only thing I have is my 3.9 GPA do u think that's enough?
This was everything I needed! I'm a recent graduate and I obtained my Bachelors in CTIS (Computer Technology & Information Systems). At first I went from being highly passionate about IT and Technology to losing that passion. Computers are something I love BUT as I've gotten into education, I've noticed there's so many things I can do with it. That's my problem. I'm stuck in a crossroad. I learned a pinch of everything in school but EXPERIENCE is not something I got that is needed. I wish I could get that experience and get myself back into it.

Dude I'm glad you posted this. Im in the Army and "wanted" to get an associates in computers before I got out. But now I know because I really like computers, doesnt mean I will enjoy writing code, looking at graphs etc. so now back to square one lol
+Manuel Escudero Please don't get discouraged by this video, IT is an amazing field! It offers a lot of great opportunity and there is a lot of room to move around. That's probably one of the great things about it. I've seen many people start out as one thing(coder for instance) and move onto doing system administration duties, of course there was a lot of work done on this persons side to teach themselves a lot of the work but it happens. Of course I'll still stick to if you can't be passionate about being in I.T. more than likely it's not the best job for you.

Thank you for this video! I am about to graduate with a bachelor's in PR. The past year, I have realized this major is not for me and do not have any passion for it at all. I have been told by countless people that I should go into the I.T. graduate department at my college as it is very good. People saw my enthusiasm with computers and technology and suggested it. I visited the department directors and we had an informal interview and was shown some of the projects people were working on. I had a genuine interest and would love to be able to create modules, apps, and websites, as well as learn more about computer software and hardware. I have no background in coding, computer science, advanced math, or engineering, but this is something I would love to learn how to do. I keep going back and forth and having some doubts. I would love to know a place to start, so I have some basic knowledge before I take classes in I.T. I have tried code academy over the summer and found it helpful with some basic html and css language. Any suggestions are most helpful. Thank you! I apologizing for rambling.
+Kyreem Powers NO problem, glad to hear something like this. You are already on TH-cam so that should really be your first place to start. Start searching for programming basics and things like that and you really will find a lot of useful videos from people teaching you from the start. I'm not at all interested in programming so unfortunely I am not of much help to you on that aspect of things. If it's something you are interested in you will definitely take the time to do your research and learn what you can. Definitely try to look specifically at a niche of programming but don't forget to keep your possibilities open as something really cool might open up in the future.

I think IT is for problem solvers and people thinking outside of the box. You don't need to be a total nerd you need to be curious, logical and creative, if you are helpful or people person it's a big plus. BEST IT people do NOT always have or started with a crazy passion for computers. Some people have passion for solving and creating something bigger something helpful meaningful and are passionate about learning new things... exceeding at those things.. and they are all insanely curious and that is what keeps them going :) ... Remember that for most of curious people passion comes with doing something well and getting better at it, discovering something every day , so don't give up!

Absolutely! I couldn't agree with your comment more. There is a belief that if your not passionate about something you shouldn't do it. Thousands upon thousands of people do not know their passion, that doesn't mean they shouldn't try for a good job.

So basically be willing to learn. I have life experience and having passion is not a requirement to he good at something. Many doctors, scientists, and lawyers do not feel passionate about their jobs. Having a robust mind and good attitude seem like a good aptitude for IT.

what i love about computers is just how much you can apply into them. what you can make and do and how you tell it to act. but the greatest thing i like about it the most is just how easy you can run into problems if you aren't careful. you can stay up nights trying to find the issue and address it as you grow more and more frustrated. this is by far the best part because at this point many people turn around and say "i have had enough of technology!" It pushes me to the limits where you either bend or break and i choose to bend. its almost like life, you are faced with many challenges but you never stop where you are because the world doesnt wait for you.

meh, just keep digging about certain aspects about it to develop a passion. I work with autistic kids. i have no passion with children. but i found immense interest in ABA therapy and the techniques used to provide education and help autistic children learn new skills. I've learned I enjoy the learning techniques, applying them, and seeing the results. I feel that can translate to IT, in the right aspect. I've started to learn Python coding to test my knowledge with codes and such. it's hard, but it's fun when i interact with other coders, challenging myself to find bugs more experience coders put out, and even thinking of ways codes are applied.

I’m 30 years old and still not sure what I’m passionate about. I’ve worked in sweatshops and sweated my ass off doing grunt work, hated it. I really enjoyed working in retail and helping customers, but the pay wasn’t enough to survive on. I work in healthcare now as a surgical tech, the pay is very nice, but doctors and nurses aren’t always the easiest people to work with. They will literally drive you to drinking. I consider myself a people person, but it seems like when other people hate their job, it will make you question yours. I’ve always been a team player, but when other people are constantly nagging and complaining, it ruins team chemistry. I’m confident I will find my passion eventually, but it’s a frustrating task my friend. I’m just going to call it “Life”.

He's always educating himself with IT, building computers, trouble shooting issues and finding solutions for his own personal and friends computers. He's leaning towards changing his major to IT. Something that everyone in this comment section needs to realize, even if he has experience in the field ultimately what he is saying is only one person's opinion. That's not discounting his opinion or saying he's right or wrong, it's just what we have to keep that in perspective. 10 people can go through the exact same experience and have 10 completely different outlooks and takes on it. I see this so much in youtube comment sections with anyone who makes videos representing any field. People take their word as absolute/the word of god and forget at the end of the day that it's just one person's perspective.

Watching this video well on my way to finishing an IT bachelor's degree. My high school counselor was floundered when I told her I wanted to go into IT because she felt it was a waste of my social skills! Glad to hear I'm going on the right path. For what it's worth, I'm 21.
I will say, I think a college degree is becoming more important in this field as more people find their way into it. It's becoming necessary to see that a potential employee has the acumen and persistence to be able to get through college. I used to do martial arts and one of my head instructors was a higher-up in Information Systems at IBM. He told me that, when I had finished my degree, he'd find an open spot for me to fill in under his wing. He impressed upon me that the degree was important, which I don't think was as big of a deal in 1999 - even to 2010/11/12/whenever you got your job - because there were fewer people who cared to learn about the intricacies of data comms or how to replace a hard drive and reformat an OS.
The thing that I like much to happen in my life is coming back on this channel of ours 10 years to come when am an IT expert with IT experience...am soon starting my college for IT in August, please don't forget this because I will be telling u the progress

I’ve worked retail for 5 years and have been told I have good customer service skills that I didn’t have before working this job (with a few racist bad apples that I’ve learned to handle professionally). I’m only awkward at first if they seem stone-faced or not willing to talk (or y’know, call me a racial slur...I’ve had a lotta bad experience with that🙃). I appreciate it bub. I'm going to OSUIT, and that is the one thing that appeals to me. The ever changing market with the IT department, plus the expansion of new technology, seemingly every other week, it is a great career investment, and will continue to grow. I love the fact that the situation can and will change, especially since the interfaces, both in software and hardware are in the early stages of development, which helps with the advancements while not only working, but also stimulates the body and mind while finding ways to improve.

This is informal, but sadly it's too truthful about my current issue and that is I have no passion for computer programming and IT ... yet, for some reason, a part of me still says: "WELL YOU BARELY TRY IT! A PASSION WILL COME IF YOU TRY IT!" I don't know, but is that normal? I mean I love what computers do, but I still don't know enough and the only programming I maybe passionate for is web designing, yet it's so difficult to find work and ... I don't know, I feel burnt out about it.
You don't necessarily need to be truly passionate about the field to work in it. But it definitely helps A LOT. I first started doing web development and I thought I loved it...I started doing non-web development I.T. things and I found that I was extremely passionate about it. It's different for everyone. Having a passion for something just makes it easier.

I have to say something here because this video is great and your doing a great service informing young people about IT. There's many fields of IT that you can work in and those fields requiere diferent people skills. You can do tech support or server support and in those you will be solving problems and interacting with a team. Most of the time you have to talk to people. The other field that exist in IT is software development or web development. The thing you have to remember is you have to be good learning programming languages and bening good at math. No so much at bening good at math but being able to solve problems.
I have recently decided to go into the IT field. I have had a passion for computers and problem solving and I do feel a passion for this field. I Just finished my basics at my local community college and plan to go get my bachelors in CIS. I will be going off to the university this fall. I personally feel I need/want a degree and formal education to have a better foundation in this field. I plan to go for certifications latter on as well. think about it, you can't get most jobs out there just with a degree because you'll have no experience, unless they train you or you come out of a trade/vocational school and are certified in something (which is overlooked a lot by universities as the only route after high school but isn't)

shanzpro It's not too hard to gather some general knowledge about computers etc., just have a talk with a friend or the nerd from your school, and when you reach a set level, you are gonna be teaching the rest yourself.
If you want to be involved in working with video games, then I would look into Computer Science because that's one of the only curriculum where you could learn how to develop video games. IT isn't going to teach you that very much.

Don't pursue gaming. I got an associates degree in game design and now I'm not even interested in the industry anymore after meeting people in the field who have shared horror stories.

Great video, starting with the first question about being being passionate about it to the last point about sociability and customer service - that's one thing I will definitely need to build over the next few years. I love technology so much, and I've always watched youtube videos and reviews of every new device that comes out, be it new CPUs, or other hardware components. I've always been extremely interested in mobile devices, from when device manufacturers wouldn't even list the CPU frequency because it didn't matter when paired with 64MB RAM. There was almost like a boom in 2009/2010 when android devices had somewhat caught up with the iPhone. The transitions from resistive to capacative touch, the leaps from normal resolution to high definition and the advancement of single-core to dual-core to quad-core CPUs - it was an incredible time for me and there was an unbeleivable passion. Now it seems we have kind of hit a plateau, but I'm sure that will come back because there are always other new technologies like wearables and VR that that continue to evolve. Technology is truly amazing, it never stops and is arguably exponential in its evolution - very very exciting.

I agree with everything in this video. Passion is #1 and being able to communicate with others is #2. If I knew what I know now back when I was first starting out my life would've been very different.
For starters, I would not have gone to college. My 4 year degree didn't help me get jobs as much as I thought it would. It basically helped with HR screening resumes and even then I'd constantly get passed up by people with more job experience while I was first starting out. I had vocational school in high school, I should have just stuck with that and got a job at a school district or some other place to start out with.
Also I want to bring up student loan debt. I'm very fortunate in having paid mine off, however, it's only been about 10 years since I graduated and since then it's gotten tons more expensive to where it's something that I'd recommend not doing unless you absolutely need to in order to get into IT so it really depends on what career you want in IT.
In my case I'm the Network Admin at my work place. I manage Windows servers, Linux servers, routers, firewalls, switches, etc. There's very little that I learned in college that I wouldn't have learned in the field, online, and from numerous computer books (yes they still exist). It basically amounted to getting a jump start on problem solving skills, a jump start on some programming skills, a jump start on technical knowledge, and technical writing (like how to write manuals and other forms of documentation) which is about the only thing that was unique about it. I didn't need biology, or calculus, or history to be able to do the job.
That being said I'm glad for my college experience as it did help me grow as a person and while things like biology, and history have no career relevance what so ever, they did help me become a little more rounded and it did help a little in relating to non-technical people, but only a little.
I got the bulk of my communication skills by fixing PCs for people and also working at a gas station in high school to save up money for college. The rest I figured out as I went along on the job, but being good at communication was really important. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for good communication skills.
I wouldn't consider my college years to be complete waist because for me they were a great experience, but the resulting student loan debt crippled what I could afford to do with my life afterwards. It took me 10 long years after college and not being able to do much with my life to finally pay off my student loans. Given how they've held me back in life, I would not have gone to college to be a network admin and now 10 years latter, I really would not advise anyone to do so either. I had a few months of deciding whether to pay the rent on my apartment or sending a loan payment while having to go to my parents house to eat because money was too tight and it was just me living alone without a family.
College is LOT more expensive now than it was 10 years ago. I welcome anyone into the world of IT if they have the passion and drive for it, but if you can avoid college, do it because the student loan debt is going to be bad when you get out and bankruptcy does not get rid it. Unlike any other debt, student loan debt is with you for the rest of your life unless you pay it off.
You may luck out and find a vocational school to help get you the basics and save yourself a ton of money. Otherwise, start learning on your own if you haven't done so already. You're going to be learning on your own after school anyway so you may as well start now. Then start getting those temp jobs to build the experience and go up from there.

Many people will argue with you on going to school or not going to school, currently I work with two system administrators that did not go to college and they are some very smart fella's, so it really goes to show you that sometimes experience far outweighs the benefits of having a degree.
Now on the other hand I've actually been turned down two jobs because I did NOT go to college. One common tip that I would recommend to anyone that gets turned down from a job is to ask(if they don't tell you) why you were turned down from the job. This may be a little awkward but this will at least give you some insight on what potential employers are looking for.
All in all this really can go both ways for sure, but I'm very thankful for your comment because it's extremely refreshing to receive some input on someone who attended college and their thoughts about it.

You're absolutely right about asking why if you get turned down for a job. Not everyone is going to tell you why especially if you never get past the HR screening process that only looks at resume keywords, but it also goes hand in hand with doing the follow up contact with them after your interview. When I was interviewing I'd normally wait a week after the interview and then do a follow up contact with them if I hadn't heard back. It's a good way to remind them that you still exist and that you're still interested, and if they tell you that they decided on someone else, you're already in a dialog with them making it easier to ask why you were not chosen for it.
The college thing does go both ways. Part of the problem is that most job postings I've seen require at least an associates degree even though the job does not require it. I can't tell you how many times I've seen jobs for ENTRY LEVEL help desk call centers where their job is to tell you to reboot the computer that requires at least a 2 year degree. It's asinine.
My advice: work while in school! I was lucky enough to be in a college where they hired students for the help desk to help other students with their computers for things like cleaning out viruses, troubleshooting Internet connections and the like. If you're lucky enough to find something like that because it's easier to work around your class schedule, do it. It's work experience you can use on the resume after college.
I can honestly say that my 4 years in college did help me with that screening process and it did help me get to the interviews. However, it was my experience that landed me jobs more so than the degree and working while in college helped after college. Also some jobs don't offer advancement without a college degree. In the end it's really a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation due to stagnant wages and high student loan debt. The trick is to find something you want to do in IT and then figure out the cheapest way to get there and as I mentioned in my last comment, it really depends on what you want to do in IT as that'll change what you have to look at to find that balance.
Back when I was first starting out I could've avoided college. Oh and networking (as in people not computer networks :P) while doing the temp jobs helps too. Some temp jobs lead to permanent jobs and sometimes you can meet people who might be able to hand your resume in to a manager they know to allow you to avoid the asinine HR screening process.
I also wouldn't expect a permanent job right after college (if one goes that route) either. Temp jobs may be all a newbie will get in some cases, but to those people I'd stress that it's OK to work temp jobs because it's builds that experience you need on the resume (even if you don't learn much from those jobs themselves) to allow you get better jobs later.
I didint find my passion for computers until now (senior year of high school) I was interested in computers per say but I never had a passion for them so I never had a drive to learn how to do some things, but this year I’m not sure what made me change but my mind set is just different and I’ve wanted to actually learn everything there is about computers because it’s fun for me, also finally built my first computer last week (keep in mind I’ve been in a IT pathway at school since sophomore year)

I REALLY APPRECIATE THIS VIDEO! I took notes on all you spoke on. I am starting school next month and I am pretty nervous. As you said before, it is about passion and I am learning that the passion grows everyday. I am fairly new in the 'tech' world but I began about six months ago with the yearning to learn code. I started teaching myself Java and thought, 'man, there is so much to learn in programming in general. As I started learning code I found that the skills of knowing the functions of the computer is just as amazing. I love computers! I taught myself how to build and fix my own all through the power of the internet. At the rightful age of 33 I decided to get back to school and I chose IT. I am extremely excited to learn further however I have concerns that I won't know enough. I guess there is a fear of looking like an idiot but I have the wonderful ability of not being able to give up until the job is done. I work in a factory and I often get asked to troubleshoot heavy equipment yet it doesn't give the superhero sensation that you get when your boss or coworkers call on you to fix their computers! You are on spot by saying you have to passionate about computers. Even though I worry whether I will have the knowledge to be competent I won't hesitate to put my head down and go because I am going to get there.😀

This was everything I needed! I'm a recent graduate and I obtained my Bachelors in CTIS (Computer Technology & Information Systems). At first I went from being highly passionate about IT and Technology to losing that passion. Computers are something I love BUT as I've gotten into education, I've noticed there's so many things I can do with it. That's my problem. I'm stuck in a crossroad. I learned a pinch of everything in school but EXPERIENCE is not something I got that is needed. I wish I could get that experience and get myself back into it.

+Manuel Escudero Please don't get discouraged by this video, IT is an amazing field! It offers a lot of great opportunity and there is a lot of room to move around. That's probably one of the great things about it. I've seen many people start out as one thing(coder for instance) and move onto doing system administration duties, of course there was a lot of work done on this persons side to teach themselves a lot of the work but it happens. Of course I'll still stick to if you can't be passionate about being in I.T. more than likely it's not the best job for you.

Thank you for this video! I am about to graduate with a bachelor's in PR. The past year, I have realized this major is not for me and do not have any passion for it at all. I have been told by countless people that I should go into the I.T. graduate department at my college as it is very good. People saw my enthusiasm with computers and technology and suggested it. I visited the department directors and we had an informal interview and was shown some of the projects people were working on. I had a genuine interest and would love to be able to create modules, apps, and websites, as well as learn more about computer software and hardware. I have no background in coding, computer science, advanced math, or engineering, but this is something I would love to learn how to do. I keep going back and forth and having some doubts. I would love to know a place to start, so I have some basic knowledge before I take classes in I.T. I have tried code academy over the summer and found it helpful with some basic html and css language. Any suggestions are most helpful. Thank you! I apologizing for rambling.

Start searching for programming basics and things like that and you really will find a lot of useful videos from people teaching you from the start. I'm not at all interested in programming so unfortunely I am not of much help to you on that aspect of things. If it's something you are interested in you will definitely take the time to do your research and learn what you can. Definitely try to look specifically at a niche of programming but don't forget to keep your possibilities open as something really cool might open up in the future.
