Hello Hanier Family [Cynthia and Chriss if I heard right] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I just posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: th-cam.com/users/gbardaccommunity

She said when we spoke that she never thought shed be backing to a metal band but was pleasantly surprised at how orchestral and metal came together and said Tuomas was genius with his writing and composing. What they do live is 10 times better than the studio version. As to being rigid, Nightwish prides themselves on being able to delivery their songs as good as if not better than the album version, and now with Floor Jansen who by the way joined the band in Oct 2012 in the middle of their 2012 USA tour with only 48 hrs notice, this concert was recorded 8 months later. Floor is able to delivery the songs with the emotion and passion that was intended when written. She draws her energy from the crowd and her bandmates as she is a true Empath.

Well, to be fair, the album version of this song sounds very different, because it has a different singer. Floor is a part of Nightwish since 2012, but the band is back from the 90's and had 3 different singers during the time, but with Floor, they now have found the perfect match. The first one Tarja was a great opera singer, but very limited to that opera style of singing. Anette was more a rock/pop voice and had her struggles with the operatic stuff. Floor can do it all.

Floor is the 3rd and current singer of Nightwish. The songs that you recall may have been from the 1st or 2nd singers. I'm not a fan of their voices. Floor is extremely versatile with a powerful and pitch perfect voice. There were no 'flop' notes. Her voice has been analyzed by a computer on the channel 'Wings of Pegasus' and the outcome was that she has one of the most pitch perfect voices on the planet. Nightwish plays a huge variety of styles, and all their songs are quite different from each other. There's probably a few that you would enjoy.

I get what you're saying about little improvisation on stage or live additions to songs that make them sound a bit different every time you hear them live. But it's easier to do when there's no backing tracks involved. The whole orchestra part of the Nightwish songs comes from the backing tracks so there's not a whole lot of room for improvisation or anything like that. They have done a bit adjusting to the songs during the years, but not like they are different in every individual concert, more like "let's do it like this on this tour". So it's not just 3-5 players on stage that are jamming with each other - with Nightwish we are talking about big compositions that include a whole orchestra. As brilliant musicians they could easily improvise and show off their skills, but they are playing to do justice to the songs. 😊

As a 60+ year old who grew up with many bands that couldn't approximate their studio recordings live, I welcome NW's rigid style. One example is Boston, who I had seen live a few times, just didn't come close to the tightness of the originals. Toto was the kind of band that was as tight live and recorded but actually change things up for each concert. Nightwish uses an orchestral backing track for most all their music which does not lend itself to much song variation which is a big part of why they can't stray too far. Good reaction guys, will def return to check out more. Ever Dream is more mainstream and might be more to your liking, Cheers!

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites:
    Energize me: th-cam.com/video/fjm4BrNAf6s/w-d-xo.html

    Dreamflight: th-cam.com/video/73-_F9prx4I/w-d-xo.html
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). Here is a link to a part of a TV show (with english subtitles) of the reunion of the class of the Rock Academy with mostly backstage footage of the Tampere concert of Nightwish in 2015: th-cam.com/video/B3NIfu0qvtg/w-d-xo.html
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song. Here are some examples:
    Misery’s no Crime: th-cam.com/video/SNPesLFTnUg/w-d-xo.html
    Disdain: th-cam.com/video/tIqzPXzhEuw/w-d-xo.html
    Wild card: th-cam.com/video/GpZMFALYeGc/w-d-xo.html
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: th-cam.com/video/vhExkmWKMEU/w-d-xo.html
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see:: th-cam.com/video/bAiPeSsqD-4/w-d-xo.html
A suggestion to a christmas song sung by Floor. Here is a link to a performance in Finland with a special guest with the best seat you could imagine: th-cam.com/video/ym1Wc5dmUYc/w-d-xo.html
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on TH-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa:, th-cam.com/video/QqdvFPBGN0c/w-d-xo.html
and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini: th-cam.com/video/UeTyAZtV5wI/w-d-xo.html
As live concerts were cancelled in 2019 and 2020 and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered TH-cam. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish:. th-cam.com/video/QW_3F186_5Q/w-d-xo.html
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of the presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughter Freja (5 years old), a horse and pony, a dog and a bunch of cats, she found this. Sadly she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she has got surgery yesterday. The prognoses are good however and she wants to be on the European tour which starts november 20th.

I believe it's the London Philharmonic Orchestra on tracks in the background since they can't realistically tour with an orchestra, and I think they also have choirs recorded on tracks too for some song, but their live performances can actually be quite different from one another, Floor certainly has taken some lead in playing around with the vocals parts of many songs and interpreted them differently over the years.

Welcome to Nightwish and symphonic metal.
The orchestral tracks are prerecorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Angel Studios, London under the direction of Pip Williams.
Choirs were also recorded in England by London's The Metro Voices and young Children's Choir.
The keyboard player and main founder, Tuomas chooses to play the string arrangements in most songs depending on what other sounds he adds to the songs on keyboards.
The 6 foot, Dutch Goddess of all things vocal, is Floor Jansen.
She is classically trained and knows more about how to use the vocal mechanism than any singer you will ever know.
Her versatility is wide which gives her an arsenal of singing styles to choose from.
Her highest note performed live to date is a D6# and she reached it with a smile on her face. (Romanticide- Wacken 2013)
The lineup other than keys and vocals...
    Emppu - guitar
    Marko - bass/vocals
    Jukka - drums
    Troy - multi instrumentalist

Welcome to the glorious world of Symphonic Metal, the glorious mash up of symphonic composition, orchestral instruments, and heavy metal. Cynthia probably heard a song with their first singer Tarja who was a classically trained opera singer and some people do find that combination with heavy music somewhat jarring (I don't). This is Floor, their 3rd singer and one of the best, most versatile female singer's IMHO. I had given up on American music some time ago because it was so simplistic and devoid of any meaning. It did nothing to make my life better. Then 3 years ago I discovered Nightwish and then through them a whole different world of music that exist outside of the U.S. Bands with thoughtful and complex instrumentation and lyrics that challenge you to think about big idea's while still being fun. I connect with this music emotionally and it makes me a better person. Hopefully you will continue to listen and explore since Nightwish has many different types of songs, from straight forward chorus/verse songs, to ballads, to epic songs like this that will take you on a journey. Ghost Love Score is not from a movie but is written in a style of a movie score (Tuomas, their main songwriter, is a big fan of movie scores). Maybe try Sleeping Sun, live from Tampere or Master's of Rock for a different side of them.

The rigidity is what their fans want. The music is crafted very carefully and the fans want the same experience live that they felt on the album. I think when you are part of a Nightwish crowd it is the fact that you are sharing your favourite band with so many other people and that you get exactly what you love that makes the experience such an amazing one. In fact that is the very criticism of the second lead singer - she couldn't pull off what the audience was expecting so has been universally bashed. Even though for a lot of us the albums she was involved with are a couple of the best.

  • @dieseldog00
    @dieseldog00 ปีที่แล้ว +3

idk how many changes Tuomas Holopainen wrote into his score but probably ten so this is not a 'rigid' song. He and the London Symphony Orchestra Conductor worked long hours making this composition the best it could be b/c it is very complicated with key and rythym changes.
This was Floor's big concert b/c she had never before sung in front of 82,000 people. She replaced the previous singer who had gotten pregnant and could not continue on their South American tour.
Floor agreed to a part time job with Nightwish and flew to Seattle where NW was stuck w/o a lead singer. She was given two days to learn the setlist because she had not sung with Nightwish in ten years. From Seattle they toured South America and I think she sang GLS every stop which was 5-6 concerts. After this concert the band asked her to become a permanent member of Nightwish and ten years later she is still their frontwoman.
BTW two weeks ago Floor was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent the operation yesterday. The tumor was benign and was removed. She plans to go on their European tour starting late November.

Thanks Hanier Family for your high standard in music.
I do agree that experiencing the live show 'in situ' is way better than seeing a video of it.
Yes they are very talented. I myself would not make a fuss over a few off-notes (?) of the singer when she has just delivered such a powerful performance. And yes, the band sure is 'rigid', in that they stick to their score. They have to, with pieces so cut-up into contrasting sentences and so 'crowded in sound', in order to keep it clear. Just like your Mozart and Beethoven (I would think Orff) did not leave any light between the notes of the score.
In Jazz , Blues and some Pop/Rock, obviously, one traditionally can have lots of free-play in designated areas of a number; this is the nature of the styles.

Nightwish is an extremely talented band, and the genius behind the band is Tuomas, the Mozart of Metal, is the keyboard player. Floor Jansen Is the lead singer, who has had classical training. Marko is the bass guitarist and also back up vocals, and lead vocals. Jukka, the Pirate, is the drummer, who sadly had to stop due to a medical condition, but is still with the band in a managerial position. Jukka has been replaced with on of his friends and mentors, Kai. Emppu is the lead guitarist! Not seen in this song is Troy...if you ask him what instrument he plays...he says "Yes!". He is an extremely talented musician, who plays many instruments, background vocals, and sometimes lead vocals.
If you want to hear some of their softer, more gentle music...
    " Dead Boy's Poem"
"While your lips are still red"
    "Sleeping Sun"
Floor also has three solos out in anticipation of her first solo album ( all done with the blessings of the band) My favorite is her first song is titled:
    "Fire"
It's about coming out of the pandemic.

The album version is very different. Tarja was the singer back then. And Floor really made it her own interpretation. It's very different. And if you see a live performance now, Floor is doing it different again. No copy paste. Nothing rigid about that I think, but indeed, it's rehearsed and so it should be if you're professionals. So check out the studio version, the live version with Tarja, the live version with Annete and a 2022 version with Floor (who is the singer in this video and the current singer). Don't take my word for it, go explore. Maybe you don't agree, that's all right as well. Btw, I do like raw as well.I like Metallica, Foo fighters, Danzig and Rage against the machine. I also find this 'rigid' comment very strange, it really confuses me, as a musician, who's played many shows with many bands - you rehearse your music, to play it well, to strive for perfection, that's what you do, snd Nightwish do it better than anyone I've ever seen. Anyway, glad you kind of enjoyed it.

The reason that this is suggested is because this singer, Floor Jansen, had only been with the band 10 months and most of the 82,000 had not heard her sing with Nightwish before. 15 songs written for previous two singers one operatic, Tarja, and one pop, Anette and Floor takes them to another level. Parts of this song are so different to album as that singer, Tarja, didn't have the versatility of Floor. Without listening to your reactions it's difficult to tell what you like as you have reacted to such a huge cross section of artists. Then perhaps a song you might enjoy could be suggested from their vast catalogue.

Nightwish certainly isn't a jam band. I do get that not everyone will find NW their go to for casual listening, but it is very hard to not be very impressed with the composition of the music and the technical musicality of the writing along with the amazing delivery. For me at 68 NW was an amazing discovery 20 years ago. I was already a big prog fan from the late 60's to now. The prog bands like Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree blended my love for prog with metal which I never saw coming. Like so many people I have grown up listening to Rock, Blues, Jazz and if it's good, I am in. Of course, some music moves me more or differently. NW for me has the rare commodity of delivering what they promised in their recordings but better, bigger, filled with emotion, still while with precision. Not easy to do and that is why so many live concerts don't live up to the recordings. Great performers and great purveyors of music are rarer than not. I was 13 and 14 when I saw Jimi Hendrix, Cream and the Doors in one calendar year incredible music that is iconic and legendary for me Nightwish although very different from my beloved Led Zeppelin's and Pink Floyd's bring me great joy and the live performances are the best. If you see enough of their performances, you can see that they love what they do, love each other and they love their fans in a genuine way. Not sure I get that vibe from most bands.

    Hello Cynthia and Chris!
While you were napping on this band they grew up exploded with the addition of their third singer, Floor Jansen (who you just reacted to).
IMO, their studio recordings are basically demos.
When they get on stage is when the magic happens! This event, on this night, with this lineup are the new reference for live performances. Every song on this night, 15 songs in the set, is your next favorite song.
    No joke!
The best part... you also opened a dimensional portal to the Galaxy of Symphonic Metal.
Ghost Love Score, GLS for shorthand, is a gateway drug into the addiction of NW!
This lineup, for many, is their best. Sadly, two of the brilliant musicians have left for health reasons. Jukka, the drummer, left full-time drumming to be part of the management team. Marco, the bassist, has taken a "sabbatical" holiday from the industry for his mental health.
The Wäcken recording is certainly one of the best "live" productions, of any, and the best source for NW performances.
The sun, the moon and stars were in harmony and the gods were pleased for this Headlining band, for the premier metal festival, possibly in the world, certainly in Europe.
Gabriel has provided a map for the journey to enlightenment. And while it's a comprehensive read for NW lore, it's not a Bible. Sometimes the road less traveled leads to unintended discoveries. (Some of my past comments regarding Gabriel's "Introduction and welcome to the army" message seemingly alienated me from the fandom. Most of the NW Army are loyal, informative, supportive and enthusiastic. Some are inviting and inclusive. Some are elitist, possessive and exclusive. But one thing is certain...all of them are passionate!)
For my tastes, I think Ever Dream is the perfect followup and great introduction to Marco's pure metal vocals. As mentioned above, the Wäcken show should be your primary source for about 14 or 15 songs... the set being 15 tracks😜
NW and Nightwish adjacent projects are plentiful.
The list of performers that are connected to this lineup is staggering. Most notably is AYREON.
Ayreon is a project conceived by the brilliantly gifted Arjen Lucassen.
Multi-instrumentalist and creator of the Ayreon universe, Arjen enlists the best talent from across the genre, (Symphonic Metal) and globe to give life to his imagination. And it is VAST!
I wanted you to know that the community you're now a part of is Very welcoming, passionate AND excited to join you on your MOST EPIC EXPLORATION of your new FAVORITE BAND, singer(s), musicians and community.
The community includes, but certainly not limited to... After Forever, Revamp, Tarot
    Ayreon...of course
Epica... (female lead) you'll see for yourself
    Kamelot
    Avantasia
Dream Theater (considered one of the pioneers)
    Within Temptation (female lead)
    Amaranth (female lead)

    Elysion (female lead)
    Nemesea (female lead)
The Dark Element (female lead, sensing a theme?)

By no means is my list of 'other' bands and artists a complete list.
But you will find it's a beautiful community. 'Metal' has some prejudice and preconception challenges to overcome and the Symphonic Metal sub-genre is so NOT typical.
The artists are so amazing and regularly work together and cross-pollinate ideas, talent and knowledge to increase and improve their 'family'.
Some of the artists I list are lesser known, but equally gifted and I gravitate towards some of those.

Yours is an empty hope (IMO this song is raw - on the harder side) - Live at Wembley Arena
I Want My Tears Back - Decades - Live In Buenos Aires 2019 - IMO this performance is raw
And maybe you would like Marko Hietala's solo songs (for example: Isäni ääni). I think his style is raw sounding.

Ps: this performance of Nightwish is just the tip of the iceberg. They are so versatile and have such a huge catalogue that even I, not loving the genre, am impressed. Their super high level live perfomances are way more entertaining and better than their studio work. And that is an interesting thing to analyse further. Succes and have fun.

I giggled when you said the studio version must be very similar. This song wasn’t even wrote for Floor. 😆❤️🙏🏻 Once you get more info, you will look back and giggle too. 🥰
I got to the end and I’m crackin up. Floor had not been with the band but 8 months at this point. (I think)
One the most frequent comments about them is that you never know what your going to get. They even change up the set list from show to show. Cool, eh? 👍🏻👏🏻🥰🎃

I don’t think anything is performed well if it isn’t practiced a lot. Especially the music Nightwish makes. There are so many switches within songs and that requires perfect timing which they all seem to have. Floor is their 3rd singer and in my opinion the best because she has it all. Especially that rough metal voice she added to Nightwish and her singing together with Marko the bassist is amazing. They have some other songs you might like some more. This one is really like a score. But they have a lot of variaton. Songs that are way more metal like “Song of myself”, “Romanticide”, “Tribal”, Ghost river” or “Slaying the dreamer” or softer songs like “How is the heart” or “Dead boys poem” or more hit songs like “Ever dream” and “Amaranth” or like growling with “Yours is an empty hope” or jazz with “Slow love slow” or crazy songs like “Devil and the deep dark ocean” or songs with a lot of emotion switches like “The Poet and the Pendulum”.

Great reaction. Welcome to Nightwish. As others have pointed out, every song is different, so perhaps there are things that might hit better. As for your "too rigid" comment, are you sure that is the word you are going for? Based on that, I would have to think that you would also find Pink Floyd too rigid. They also rely heavily on precision and timing, especially for their elaborate light shows. FWIW, this song as performed here is quite different from the album. Not only was it a different lead singer, but the ending of the song is quite different. If lack of rigidity is your thing, perhaps a jam band like the Grateful Dead would be a good fit.

We never really checked out the Dead much. Perhaps we'd like it. Honestly, one song can never be enough to understand a band and their sound. We'll be returning to Nightwish soon.

@@hanierfamily thank you for the kind response. I am glad that you will be continuing the Nightwish journey. With 3 lead singers (plus Marko the bass player who is also an amazing singer) and songs that range from ballads, to sea shanty to Celtic influenced jigs to rock and metal (some with impressive growling by Floor), this rabbit hole is quite deep and there is something for everyone.
As for the Grateful Dead, this is another deep rabbit hole. Like Nightwish, stick with the live shows. GD music is more a combination of Blue Grass, Jug Band, Blues, Jazz, Country, Folk and a mixture of progressive and psychedelic rock. The live stuff is very improvisational and they mix a lot of classic rock covers (Dylan, The Band, Janis Joplin, and many others) in with their originals.

I have to say that this the first reaction video to this song where the reactor actually looks bored. OK. If it's not your particular thing, so be it. But for there to be no reaction on your faces to that Floor's final note is beyond belief.

First break. Two points - First, Floor is the third vocalists the band has heard, so what you have heard before, even if were the same song, could really be different than what you heard here. Second, I would have no real interest in hearing this band's records. Much more organic listening to them live. This performance though, specifically, is one of the best video recordings I've ever heard.
I don't consider myself a Nightwish fan like the majority of the folks you'll find here. I'm really a fan of Floor's and her solo projects, which, after seeing her solo performances from her appearance on the Dutch tv show Beste' Zangers solidified my fandom of Floor and introduced me to Nightwish. So, to promote Floor I'm going to take the liberty of posting a selected playlist of live performances that I consider the most enjoyable for me from her catalog of solo projects.
    2019 - Beste' Zangers
Solo cover of "Shallow" (Lady Gaga) - th-cam.com/video/M68pe4a_9zk/w-d-xo.html
Duet cover of "Phantom of the Opera" w/ Henk Poort - th-cam.com/video/plCScjvDOJM/w-d-xo.html
    2021 - solo Amsterdam Concert
    Storm in a Glass - th-cam.com/video/7ax5nSPB9t8/w-d-xo.html
    Slow, Love, Slow - th-cam.com/video/bBG8GdyLYDk/w-d-xo.html
2022 - Recently released singles from her upcoming 2023 solo album. There are music videos of these singles but I prefer the more organic live versions. All three venues provided excellent acoustics
    "Fire" - recorded at HLF8 - th-cam.com/video/rqwHMgo_DdQ/w-d-xo.html
    "Storm" w/orchastra - th-cam.com/video/8dAP8Mjgh_E/w-d-xo.html
