    got one of these before the winter came in and it is much the same as yours , I have open plan sitting room but the fan is positioned to push hot air at the stairs , the top of the house is real cozy now , you will notice the difference in the tent but don't expect massive leaps in temp , cheers from Scotland

  • @faniefaze
    @faniefaze 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Very simple, it uses a peltier module to generate electricity to turn the fan. The power generated is the result of the p-n junction arrays which has a hot and cold side, the bigger the temperature differential over the unit, the more power. The fancy metal on top is a heatsink keeping the differential temperature top and bottom as big as possible. The unit is however very inefficient... only ~12%. Thermo-electric cooler boxes use them, and they can be stacked for increased cold for definition on camera's if you power them. Heat applied generates voltage, power supplied generates heat and cold.

    We bought 2 of these some ten years ago, and put it on top of our wood stove, they work well, however the fan is kind of a mild blow, but still does work. I remember that they were so-o expensive when we got ours, they seemed to have come down in price considerably. I'm a bit surprised that you just first got one...

  • @DoRC

    The specific shape has little to do with the function. There is a thermoelectric panel sandwiched between the top and bottom (white part). The shape at the top is designed to have a lot of surface area and for the fan to draw air through it. When placed on a hot surface a temperature differential is created between the top (cooler) and bottom (warmer) sides of the TEC and it creates electricity.
    Interestingly it also works in reverse. If you were to spin the fan quickly once side of the TEC would get warm and the other would cool down.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      jrg10332 yep. That's actually the primary use for them. They are terribly inefficient at both heating and cooling but are good when systems such as phase change etc are too bulky or complicated.

      And here I thought it worked on convection, kind of like a steam engine, raising heat (steam) waves strike a impeller (turbine) and causes it to move. But I can see where a thermo-electric generator would work much better. Someone was using their thinking cap to invent this.

    I have one on a pellet stove, but it doesn't start as easily and doesn't turn as fast. I know that if I can create more heat mass it will spin faster. I have a cast iron pot and I will flip it upside down to see if it will hold the heat better to start the fan and keep it going.

    Yes I wouldn't advise putting it on a cooker ! But they are great I've been using them for a few years makes a massive difference to my woodstove , they do have a lifespan the first I got (4years ago) still runs but is slower than a new (same model) I got last year
    Saying that they boost the efficiency of the stove so much (I actually use less wood) that they are really worth it
    Enjoy
