  • Casablanca Spirit of Saturn 50" Inteli•Touch ceiling fan in white/polished brass. This fan was recently sent to me by Burton Burton's son, Andrew. It purportedly came out of a building that Burton had outfitted with Casablanca product in the 80s, and was now undergoing some remodeling. I have no indication that it was a Casablanca facility, it sounded more like one of the many other rental and income properties that Burton owned in the Pasadena area. I received a number of other common fans along with this one (Panama 5s, Delta IIs, a Lady Delta), many of those are being parted out due to condition or damage, or will be project fans for down the road. I also received some old school Casablanca light fixtures, which I hope to use in my display area soon. The Saturn was the only fan I really wanted to work on and get going right away. It's an early one, with the light drive module in the switch housing, a single tubular bulb, and plastic center shade. The light had been replaced with a K4S at some point, by some miracle they must've kept the original cap/center tube combo on hand somewhere. There were no rings with it. Shown is the set of plexiglass rings that came with a Four Seasons I found a number of years ago, which by some cosmic coincidence was missing the center tube. So with everything I had, I was able to make a pretty complete fan, and I can use the fitter from the Four Seasons with another set of NIB rings/center tube I have that lack a fitter. It's amazing how things eventually even out. It's why I hoard parts like crazy! This fan had a lot going on when I received it. The switch housing was badly bent, K4S was destroyed, but amazingly it otherwise looked really quite good. I don't blame it on Andrew for the packing, he's not an expert fan packer so it is what it is. I was able to whack the switch housing back with minimal damage, it's a bit warped on top, but nothing you can visibly see. Bearings were terrible, open it up to see it's an Astrosyn motor paired with IT. I've heard that's not a good combo, but since it was original I wanted to keep it original. Replaced the bearings, put it back together to bench test, and I'm glad I didn't go any further. It was acting weird, and after a few minutes, it smoked the board. I'm not fully sure if it was having major issues beforehand, I only really made sure the LDM was functional and that the fan turned on and off. I looked everything over multiple times and couldn't find any mistakes that I'd made, so I didn't want to risk frying another board and decided to just swap in a K55 from one of the Panamas, which of course also needed new bearings. Spent a whole afternoon trying to do what should've taken an hour or two max, but the end result was worth it. After washing everything down, the motor and all that is in great shape aside from some small spotty issues with the brass. Blades are unfortunately somewhat unevenly faded and have some scratches and chipping, I do have spare white Saturn blades without the stencil lines I could use if I wanted a cleaner look. The center tube being plastic is also kind of faded and dark in spots, but once the rings are on you can't really tell. Low speed is a bit weak, but seems to be getting better as the bearings get worked in. This is the longest description I've written in awhile so I'll stop here, but I haven't had a real project in awhile either! So excited about having another Saturn finish variant, and such an early one, too.

    Great looking fan. I wish I had one of these in my house. It would be our 6th Casablanca fan.

    Well I heard about how Samsung with Inteli-Touch had to be recalled due to being a fire hazard, I didn't hear about Astrosyn recall.

    Pretty cool looking fan, I'm not sure if I've ever seen this fan in white before, hmm.

      I have the entire suite that I installed into the house I designed and built in ‘87. The fans still work and look beautiful, the Torchiere is still gorgeous and the huge pendant light is still beautiful, but need to find the frosted center diffuser . Housekeeper was cleaning it and it accidentally dropped on my kitchen counter. It’s been quite a search to find one to fit.

    Have an original fan which has just recently starting to smell like electrical fire pending! Anyone know if these are repairable? Does Casablanca still exist?

      Casablanca exists as a subsidiary of Hunter, but they no longer provide any kind of support or parts for legacy products like this. There are a couple solutions.
      If you're not comfortable fully ripping apart and rewiring the fan, Fan Man offers plug and play conversion kits based on age and handheld or wall mount control preference: www.fanmanlighting.com/shop/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=110
      If you're pretty handy and want a cheaper alternative, I have a couple of videos covering single and 3 speed conversions for Casablanca fans, as well as one for implementing new receiver-based speed/light controls if desired. If your fan has the ring light kit, I'll save you the time of looking at both and say you'd probably want to do the single (high) speed conversion and use a new control system to avoid adding pull chains that would interfere with the light and be hard to operate.

    So, this came out of a house in Pasadena? Did you get this from Craigslist shipped from there?

    • @vfandm
      @vfandm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. I have no idea how you got there. Burton A. Burton, founder of Casablanca, had a lot of various investment/rental property buildings, aside from the Casablanca facilities, in the Pasadena area. He put his own products into many of them, because obviously, why wouldn't you when you make fans and lighting products and get them at cost. This building was recently undergoing some renovation, and when Burton's son got word of it, he got in touch with me to see if I wanted the fans and lights that were coming out. I said yes. He sent them to me.

    How do you change the light bulb?

    • @vfandm
      @vfandm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      On this one, I can reach the tubular bulb from the bottom of the center globe. On certain models that use a mini-can halogen bulb or those that have the mesh screen on the end of the center tube, you'd need to remove the rings by unscrewing two of the finials on the bottom, and then remove the center tube glass by loosening the three thumb screws exposed around the rim once the rings are removed.

      If you seen my vid what model control should I use?

    • @vfandm
      @vfandm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just took a glance. W11/W12 would be typical for it, but I've never found any issue with using any pulse-based IT control across all of the board generations. People have made many claims over the years that certain controls shouldn't be used with certain boards, I think I've done every combo possible and they've all worked fine. I used a W31/W32 for this one, when W11 would've been customary and performed the same. I've used W11s with newer RMMs. They all send the same pulses which signal the board to do the same thing. Take that with a grain of salt, I'm not taking responsibility for when something doesn't work or blows up, but I've not had any problems mixing systems.

      @@vfandm ok I'll hunt controls in my habitat. The fan didn't come with a control so I'll see if I can find a w11
