I really have to say I love the fact that Doc is lowkey a real hardcore mma fan with how much coverage he gives to mma and how rapidly he can put out such a well explained video so quickly right after Leon's fight!
Oh gee whizzzzzzz!!! lol You folks *really* have bit the bait and the "hook has been set" so to speak. Oh my ! :o)
Fr tho. Phrases like “a kicking masterclass” let’s you know he understands the separate aspects of the sport.
And he’s a big NBA fan too
of course he loves mma, keeps him employed haha
People doubted Leon so much said it was luck! Give this man his respect LOOK AT HIM NOW AND STILL
alot of people lost bets tonight
He told Usman. "You're fucked tomorrow Bruv"
The knockout was luck it was a Hail Mary shot.
@Darryl yup me he was fuked all usman said is we’re going to talk tomorrow and Leon talked to him
I think another thing to note is edwards is trying to weaken usman’s already blasted knees. Makes defending those takedowns much easier since usman can’t use his lower body to get edwards to the ground. If you watched the fight you saw edwards defend multiple takedowns especially in the last round.
When he threw the first leg kick of the fight at the start I went crazy because that had the be the game plan and it was.I don’t think usman will walk the same again
@Shane Moran it was a hard leg kick to I was like here we go. Same thing with Justin's first leg kick against fiziev
It was a high risk high reward strategy as kicking leaves Leon’s legs open to be grabbed which could lead to a takedown by Kamaru. It was about who was more confident in their own strategy
People (fans, experts, and those who listen to Usman himself) know the Big Man's knees aren't that great any more, from years of hard, joint-twisting wrestling. Look at how he took Leon down from their first fight back in 2015, when Usman was just 28.... to how he took Leon down in their 2nd fight in Utah...
There's a difference. Back then, Usman would do it any which way and would do it effortlessly AND QUICKLY.
In their second fight, Usman still easily took Leon down (partly due to Leon being gassed out from the high elevation), but he did it VERY METHODICALLY, SLOWLY, by pushing Leon against the fence first and then bent down very carefully to scooping Leon up like he was some expensively fragile vase Usman didn't want to break (when his whole purpose was to smash Leon to a pulp).
That's because he didn't want to aggravate his bad knees, by going down in oblique angles. OF COURSE, it all could be a fake thing: that Usman faked bad knees because it'd make him look better than he is otherwise, when he loses. But knowing how MOST elite wrestlers suffer big knee, hip, and shoulder problems... I tend to believe Usman, when he says he has bad knees...
@Kiab Toom Lauj look at the weigh ins his knees were gammy as fuck, the thing with usman when his knees were giving in he needed to work on his standup and his clinch AND FFS HIS SUBMISSIONS he’s literally no threat on the ground bar gassing you out.he’s elite in certain areas and then when your watching him he just looks so amateur in others
Great video, Doc. Until now, I think Edwards had an underrated striking game for those less aware of his fighting prowess. He had a beautiful game plan for fighting Usman. Usman fights with a long stance, typical of wrestlers and martial artists like karate and taekwondo strikers . Usman stands heavy on the lead leg which is great for forward power generation and for dropping for a takedown. Unfortunately, it also makes him heavy on the lead leg which makes lifting the lead leg to check the low kicks very difficult. Edwards used this to his advantage. Rather than checking the kicks (example: Muay Thai technique), Usman tried absorbing the kicks. Edwards was able to land the leg kicks almost indiscriminately. Ultimately this will lead to a lack of explosive forward power generation off the lead leg and decreased striking power.
yea the main adjustment is he threw primarily calf kicks and oblique kicks. Those are very hard to catch. If you throw to the thigh, like masvidal, usman catches those fast.
@AJ Exactly. It was the same adjustment that Poirier made when he fought McGregor for the second time. McGregor fights with a long bladed stance with a lot of weight on the lead right leg. McGregor was winning in the first round but the accumulation of calf kicks ultimately led to trauma of the common fibular nerve and the resulting “dead leg” McGregor complained about at the end of the fight. There’s been an increase in the use of calf kicks in MMA - a technique carried over from Muay Thai - due to its effectiveness. If you want to see a brutal example of this, watch the ONE Championship Muay Thai fight between Liam Harrison and Nong-O.
I absolutely love your channel. MMA fans tend to be more interested in the physiology behind injury because there is such a diversity of different injuries in the sport. I've already seen other MMA channels reference your videos (MMA on Point for example). I hope you continue to put out more MMA content.
I can’t believe this content is free. I learn so much about anatomy from these videos.
what a fun way to learn anatomy
My favorite fight doctor doing post fight non injury breakdown! Absolutely love it! Keep up the great work!
Great analysis of Edwards’ work! His kicks were on point tonight. Had usman thinking about them the entire fight.
Maybe its his kryptonite since usman is like goggins with bad knees
Great anatomical breakdown.. I’m a boxing and kickboxing coach. As well as taekwondo black belt. And this was a master class of kicking and taking what the opponent gives you. As well as game planning. All the low kicks build up and lower mobility as well as decreasing the power you have in any direction. The body shots are good for programming your opponent for a headshot later on, of course liver shots have the potential to put down the opponent but body kicks teeps especially will take the wind from your opponent if you can time them on the inhale and really drive the hips in.. completely Throws off their breathing rhythm. It was a pleasure watching the game plan and execution from Edwards. A noticeable switch in mentality from the first fight.. edwards had the validation knowing he could stop usman. so he threw with pure confidence and usman lacked his normal confidence which caused him not pressure as he would normally this is vital when going against somebody who needs that precise distance to throw his attacks. The pressure also negates kicking power because you need that stable footing to push off before rotating the hips. Much more difficult when constantly on the retreat. I believe Colby would do this with much more effectiveness against Edwards. Great video doc!
This is incredible content and insight doc. Thank you for sharing! It’s crazy to think that a doctor likes our destructive sport so much haha. Amazing stuff, learned a lot
Total masterclass from Leon he won that fight clearly 👏
Muhammad Mokaev knee bar injury breakdown 🔥
watching that was hard, my knee felt weak just looking at it lol. respect to Muhammad for somehow not tapping
That was so painful to watch hope he doesn't have long lasting injury
First thing that came to mind, idk how he got out of that
Gosh that was hard to watch lol
mokaev's knee is permanently damaged, his knee will never be the same
As an MMA fan and former fighter i thank you for these videos ❤
Usman was losing the balance when trying to throw hard punches and takedowns, those low kicks were super effective. He showed the world Usman's weakness
Rly impressed that Leon was able to get right back up without taking any damage, the two or three times he did get taken down. That saved him the fight. If he were not able to get up right away like that and Usman got some control time in top position Leon would’ve lost the fight. His ability to get right back up those three times saved him.
My question is how did he do Vs KAMARU USMAN
I love these fight science break downs!!! Make more please 🥊
Damn, Dr Sutterer coming through with some breakdowns too! This guy is a legit fight fan. Gotta respect that! Thanks Doc
My takeaway from these videos is MMA fighters are WAY underpaid relative to how much abuse their bodies take for this sport. Great vid as always doc.
4:50 from someone who has competed in Muay Thai and been training for around 2 years (I know I’m not an expert) this kick that you say is ineffective can be so painful in a real fight and is on if the most effective ways to damage their leg, you need to put weight on the lead leg often when throwing strikes and if it is in pain you have a big advantage. After a couple hard strikes to the same spot I am often times forced to switch stances.
Yeah I do a bit of Thai boxing and leg kicks are incredibly effective and if you have good movement they don’t leave you very exposed
This is my favorite MMA video you've ever made. Absolutely brilliant.
One of my favorite liver kicks ever was the beast that is Brock Lesnar getting utterly destroyed by Alistair Overeem’s well-placed liver kick. Freaking awesome!
Doc you should do a video (or at least take a look) at the attempted knee bar submission that Muhammad Mokaev survived on the prelim card. That one had to have done some damage!
“Looking at our bio-digital anatomy tool“ is one of my favorite phrases in the world Doc!
Now I understand why jon Jones is a fighting genius, he neutralized ganes kicks by countering with punches and changing stances Usman had no plans to counter Edwards kicks.
Helped that Gane wasn’t rly in there for a war and quit. Once that squeeze by Jones failed the first time…… Gane took a way out, he was like I’m not prepared to be wrestled like this for five rounds. After the fight Gane kinda admitted he should’ve took more preparation time and that signing the fight with less than 10 weeks for somebody like Jones with where his currently wrestling ability was at, was not a good move.
Love these fight breakdowns. I always watch them.
Plus usman has well documented knee problems apparently it’s so bad in his off season he can barely walk on concrete from the pain
Perfect since we going over Hip/Knee/Foot in school right now, appreciate you sir
The hip bone is attached to the leg bone, the leg bone is attached to the knee bone, the knee bone is attached to the shorter leg bone, and the shorter leg bone is attached to the foot bone.
I definitely think Kamaru had a lower body injury coming into the fight. Kamaru was never the fastest guy just cause he does have bad knees, but he just looked like he was slower than usual.
Kamaru did look slow and was missing alot of his punches. but leon has excellent footwork and movement .
I was at the event and it was unreal you should do a breakdown of Muhammad mokaev’s knee from the prelims :)
I have a question. You being a doctor, what’s your opinion on mma as far as the damage it causes on the athletes does it bother you considering you are a doctor seeing people somewhat destroying each other or are you a fan that believes regardless the damage it causes, competitive sports/ fighting are necessary for a society.
Gee Doc!! Those really hurt!! It seems he was deliberately going after his knees? Usmans overall speed suffered after a number of these...heck, I Never even expected him to flinch to a body kick! Leon was landing!! What's the background or info about Kamarus past/chronic knee injuries?
Excellent video, Brian. Keep 'em coming.
Leon really picked apart Kamaru in this fight. He clearly won. Kamaru had his moments but it wasn’t enough to beat the champ.
Great idea to explain this to us, Dr. Sutterer. Most casual fans wouldn't appreciate how technical MMA has become.
Now, let's address your sunburn. Good for you for wearing sunglasses, but let's have a video on how important it is for sunblock, in areas like cheeks and ears and what a severe sunburn could lead to 😂
Bas Rutten was known for the punching or kicking the liver during his MMA years.. when he connected, the opponent went down for good (for the match).
I’m surprised he never talked about what was possibly happening to Rafael Fiziev’s face during the Gaethje fight
Great video! More fight related videos would be appreciated.
Considering he was knocked out by a head kick you would think Usman's ability to check kicks would have improved
Awesome, Dr B Sutterer. I learned a lot! Thanks
Love your content Brian, outer thigh leg kicks however, very affective
José Aldo was the master of those inside kicks, he knocked out some fighter just by hammering them. But the technology has evolved now and there are these nerve damage leg kicks and ligament damge leg kicks. Wow.
Edwards & his team knew Usman would be looking for the head kick. They had an excellent game plan dismantling Usman below the waist.
Amazing how you created this video so quick. Fantastic content!
Love your videos!! The liver shot I can’t imagine how that would feel
Usman was ready for that head kick this time. He kept his right hand up 😂
Usman has had so many knee surgery it is crazy I don't know if he will ever be able to get back on the top - Age is something no one will win against sooner or latter it comes for everyone
Kamaru really put a huge ass target on his knees by complaining about them so much. Make your opponents work for that information, don't just tell them how to beat you.
This are also Doc! Keep them coming. Awesome breakdown!
Please give an explanation of how Edwards beat Usman in the 4th round.
I would love anyone to be able to justify Edwards being gifted the 4th round on the scorecard, when it was clear as day he lost round 3 & 4, with 3 being a 10-8 because of that point deduction.
Fight was a draw 100%
Please cover Muhammad Mokaevs knee from last night!! Crazy how he didn’t tap
I keep forgetting that UK fights are earlier. Congrats, Leon!
The kick to the testicles didn't help Usman at all. He should have taken the full 5 minutes for that. That was a very hard, not on purpose but direct kick to the groin. I think that took a lot out of Usman in that fight. He was barely limping when the fight was over. I think Leon actually did more damage to his own foot from all of the kicks.
I used to wonder why my thigh was always bruised ever softball games. Then I watched a video of a game and realised that I was beating the crap out of my thigh with my bat while in the batters box. It never slowed me down. But the day I took a line drive as a base runner on 3rd, right to the groin. That was the one time that I couldn't finish a game. I've played with cracked ribs, a week old broken collar bone, a ruptured synovial pitch on my throwing hand, 3 broken fingers and a cast on my throwing hand. But that ball to the balls, that took everything out of me.
Usman is the goofiest of all time!!! One of the greats in clown sports. Without a doubt, a true pigeon. They should have let him win that fight. Totally unfair.
More UFC content please!! This shit is amazing
Jon Jones type knee kicks (pushing ones) are focused on destructing structure (injury your opponent)
Not enough fighters target their opponents knees. It's one of the weakest parts of the bodies.
This is a very welcome format... keep em coming...
But did he really win?? Nah I’m playin. Great vid as always, it’s nice to actually see how kick affect a fighter rather than just knowing they hurt
1:25 no doubt why kamaru thought it was a groin shot. that muscle connects straight to the groin. i wish i found this channel ages ago i just dont know how to find these kind of channels sometimes
Do a video on the Mokaev leg lock please!
I wud love to see a longer in depth video about liver/body shots
Great explanation 💯
Sports doctor mma content is incredible. Really a in mined resource
Great simple explanation.
This is such a cool breakdown
Can you do a video on how much power you need to KO someone who's 175kg like Bob sap how much power / strength is needed rattle brain 🧠 and KO
Great video, thanks sir!
I love this new breakdown DOC👍
Doc! Can you do a vid on the mohammad mokaev getting through that gruesome knee bar?
More of this pls!!!
well usman has super bad knees already otherwise it prob wouldnt have worked so well we have to consider that i think ...not to take away from edwards bc he is great as well
You gotta show Sean Omalley this lmao. Chito still whooped him
Thank you for sharing
Review the delayed knockout from Todd vs. Vandaryeva in ONE Championship!
Only missed, "Sweep the leg, Leon!"
besides being a doctor he is also a judge lol
Great idea for a series!
Something tells me the doctor’s a ufc fan.
Im addicted to these videos
Lol - Every one of us is like, "Mokaev breakdown! Mokaev breakdown!!"
(And Dusko too!)
Leon knew that Usmans knees are hacked. AndStill
Can't wait to see you on Rogan!
Explain Dusko Tudorovic leg injury please! It made no sense at all!
Ooooh I like this idea for a video. Make this a series please!
How about those 5 lowblow kicks from Leon?
My knees about to give out after watching this
How on time just after the fight Bravo
I told People Leon Would Work Usman Blown Out Knees
Doc you need to work for the UFC Performance Institute
Now that ppl know Kamaru has bad knees they will just attack his legs. Leon winning has more to do with Kamaru being past his prime and needing to retire more than anything. Guy is gonna need both knees replaced.
Very hard to condition that area as well
i love mma but knee kicks should be illegal in the sport. kicking someone’s knee in gnarly.
very timely! awesome
Ayo the doc is doing fight breakdowns now. All the MMA analysts sweating rn.
I bet the Doc can do those slow-mo things that Sherlock Holmes does. *Discombobulate.*
Let's not underestimate his impressive finger usage technique. The way he locked them unto the cage was impeccable.
He was deducted one point. That means Usman was ahead at one point of the fight.
This video may make regulators prohibit knee strikes....it's serious damage.
Usman fans in shambles saying "pitter patter leg kicks dont win fights"
Leg kick above the knee not that painful? Brah...
im sure usman couldn't walk the next day
This what I’m talking about doc
