    I think another thing to note is edwards is trying to weaken usman’s already blasted knees. Makes defending those takedowns much easier since usman can’t use his lower body to get edwards to the ground. If you watched the fight you saw edwards defend multiple takedowns especially in the last round.

      It was a high risk high reward strategy as kicking leaves Leon’s legs open to be grabbed which could lead to a takedown by Kamaru. It was about who was more confident in their own strategy

      People (fans, experts, and those who listen to Usman himself) know the Big Man's knees aren't that great any more, from years of hard, joint-twisting wrestling. Look at how he took Leon down from their first fight back in 2015, when Usman was just 28.... to how he took Leon down in their 2nd fight in Utah...
      There's a difference. Back then, Usman would do it any which way and would do it effortlessly AND QUICKLY.
      In their second fight, Usman still easily took Leon down (partly due to Leon being gassed out from the high elevation), but he did it VERY METHODICALLY, SLOWLY, by pushing Leon against the fence first and then bent down very carefully to scooping Leon up like he was some expensively fragile vase Usman didn't want to break (when his whole purpose was to smash Leon to a pulp).
      That's because he didn't want to aggravate his bad knees, by going down in oblique angles. OF COURSE, it all could be a fake thing: that Usman faked bad knees because it'd make him look better than he is otherwise, when he loses. But knowing how MOST elite wrestlers suffer big knee, hip, and shoulder problems... I tend to believe Usman, when he says he has bad knees...

    Great video, Doc. Until now, I think Edwards had an underrated striking game for those less aware of his fighting prowess. He had a beautiful game plan for fighting Usman. Usman fights with a long stance, typical of wrestlers and martial artists like karate and taekwondo strikers . Usman stands heavy on the lead leg which is great for forward power generation and for dropping for a takedown. Unfortunately, it also makes him heavy on the lead leg which makes lifting the lead leg to check the low kicks very difficult. Edwards used this to his advantage. Rather than checking the kicks (example: Muay Thai technique), Usman tried absorbing the kicks. Edwards was able to land the leg kicks almost indiscriminately. Ultimately this will lead to a lack of explosive forward power generation off the lead leg and decreased striking power.

    • @AJ-pc9gu
      @AJ-pc9gu ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yea the main adjustment is he threw primarily calf kicks and oblique kicks. Those are very hard to catch. If you throw to the thigh, like masvidal, usman catches those fast.

    • @dstavs
      @dstavs ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AJ-pc9gu Exactly. It was the same adjustment that Poirier made when he fought McGregor for the second time. McGregor fights with a long bladed stance with a lot of weight on the lead right leg. McGregor was winning in the first round but the accumulation of calf kicks ultimately led to trauma of the common fibular nerve and the resulting “dead leg” McGregor complained about at the end of the fight. There’s been an increase in the use of calf kicks in MMA - a technique carried over from Muay Thai - due to its effectiveness. If you want to see a brutal example of this, watch the ONE Championship Muay Thai fight between Liam Harrison and Nong-O.

Once that squeeze by Jones failed the first time…… Gane took a way out, he was like I’m not prepared to be wrestled like this for five rounds. After the fight Gane kinda admitted he should’ve took more preparation time and that signing the fight with less than 10 weeks for somebody like Jones with where his currently wrestling ability was at, was not a good move.

    4:50 from someone who has competed in Muay Thai and been training for around 2 years (I know I’m not an expert) this kick that you say is ineffective can be so painful in a real fight and is on if the most effective ways to damage their leg, you need to put weight on the lead leg often when throwing strikes and if it is in pain you have a big advantage. After a couple hard strikes to the same spot I am often times forced to switch stances.

    Great anatomical breakdown.. I’m a boxing and kickboxing coach. As well as taekwondo black belt. And this was a master class of kicking and taking what the opponent gives you. As well as game planning. All the low kicks build up and lower mobility as well as decreasing the power you have in any direction. The body shots are good for programming your opponent for a headshot later on, of course liver shots have the potential to put down the opponent but body kicks teeps especially will take the wind from your opponent if you can time them on the inhale and really drive the hips in.. completely Throws off their breathing rhythm. It was a pleasure watching the game plan and execution from Edwards. A noticeable switch in mentality from the first fight.. edwards had the validation knowing he could stop usman. so he threw with pure confidence and usman lacked his normal confidence which caused him not pressure as he would normally this is vital when going against somebody who needs that precise distance to throw his attacks. The pressure also negates kicking power because you need that stable footing to push off before rotating the hips. Much more difficult when constantly on the retreat. I believe Colby would do this with much more effectiveness against Edwards. Great video doc!

    I definitely think Kamaru had a lower body injury coming into the fight. Kamaru was never the fastest guy just cause he does have bad knees, but he just looked like he was slower than usual.

      Kamaru did look slow and was missing alot of his punches. but leon has excellent footwork and movement .

    Leon really picked apart Kamaru in this fight. He clearly won. Kamaru had his moments but it wasn’t enough to beat the champ.

    The kick to the testicles didn't help Usman at all. He should have taken the full 5 minutes for that. That was a very hard, not on purpose but direct kick to the groin. I think that took a lot out of Usman in that fight. He was barely limping when the fight was over. I think Leon actually did more damage to his own foot from all of the kicks.
    I used to wonder why my thigh was always bruised ever softball games. Then I watched a video of a game and realised that I was beating the crap out of my thigh with my bat while in the batters box. It never slowed me down. But the day I took a line drive as a base runner on 3rd, right to the groin. That was the one time that I couldn't finish a game. I've played with cracked ribs, a week old broken collar bone, a ruptured synovial pitch on my throwing hand, 3 broken fingers and a cast on my throwing hand. But that ball to the balls, that took everything out of me.
