    I realize this vid is 5 yrs old. The Holbein website explains the diff between the heavier enamel boxes and aluminum ones which are lighter. The 1000 should be one of those heavier boxes. Your smaller 500, if it was made a while ago, made have been made with better materials and craftsmanship. However, I would recommend getting a box with all wells on one side of the box so you can close it flat and there are no wells to drip down onto the side where the wells are. It looks like your turquoise blue and that red-orange in your palette did that. That 500 is a nice box. Thx for vid.

    They make these boxes in steel and aluminum. Maybe the smaller one is steel which is heavier. May explain the weight difference.

      I think you’re correct. Also explains why his isn’t rusted out.

    Really good advice on letting the paint settle in each well and not squeezing/pushing the paint into the corners, ty.
    I had been looking for a steel Holbein palette for around 2 years, and was fortunate to find a video in my recommendations where someone in the comments said Vermont Art Supply has them! I now have my very own steel Holbein ☺️

    I have used a five hundred for years and I have usually got about twelve months out of one before rust , my latest one is now cracking under the pans ,I have always blocked of the thumb hole and flattened it with hammer ,,and then covered with a piece of white plastic,,I bought mine from Charles Evans , and is in use continually so paint always wet ,,

    I have a Winsor Newton from Jerry's bought in early 90s. Looks exactly like your 500--made by Holbein? Heavy but comfortable in the thumb hole. I think it is a perfect travel palette. Some are just too small. This and a Pike palette and you're set.

    Velcro strips would work great to help keep them closed when traveling.

    They put the row of slots on both sides of the lids. When you close either palette, the paint slides/falls onto the opposite side. Wouldn't it have been a better design to make one row of pans detachable to avoid the run over when transporting the palette? If it were detachable you could just put it onto the same lid for proper closing. Not sure if I articulated the concern properly.

      The paint adheres and dries to the palette. The plaint is not as viscous as you think. it's not moving anywhere.

      Sorry for late reply. I use Winsor & Newton and they stick to the wells like a hard jell. However you are right that paint from some manufacturers is a lot more runny and that very problem would arise. Schmenke ( probably spelt that wrong ) are nice paints but will drip right out of these wells even if you only fill the lower ones and only tilt it slightly.

      You could probably slip in a piece of acetate or baking paper if crosscontamination of colours is a concern.

    Thanks for sharing. Awesome video. Does the paint bead up bad in the mixing area? To me, I would think brushing the paint out of the well into the mixing area that way would be much gentler for natural hair brushes than always dipping and rubbing in.

      Sorry for the late reply Renee. When you start painting with it, it will bead up for a while - but don't be tempted to scrub it. Just persevere and the beading will quickly dissapear.

    how well do they clean up with staining colors

      Sorry for late reply. Its not too bad - some blues stain more. These boxes are only enamel paint thats more like a plastic, but some people think its the same as the old enamelled butchers trays which don't stain, but its not that type of ceramic enamell.

    I have a question. I just got one but I think I was sent a Holbein knock off. Do your wells for the paint have a slant or are they level?

    • @paulfogarty7724
      @paulfogarty7724  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Renee Moles-Marks
      Hi Renee...yes my wells have a slant on both boxes. Also Im convinced that the older smaller box is much heavier built. The large one feels a bit flimsy and in fact got a nasty dinge a few months ago but i was able to press it out. I have to admit that my white acrylic made watercolor palettes are invincable - because they are light and strong and a bit flexable they can take falls or bumps no problem.

    Hello Paul, Where Did you get the H-1000? There aren´t any on Amazon.

    • @paulfogarty7724
      @paulfogarty7724  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Pedro. I got that H 1000 on Ebay, also the 500 too years before. Look up " Watercolor palettes " and sometimes you will see one.

      Thanks Paul. Which one do you consider is more suitable?

    • @paulfogarty7724
      @paulfogarty7724  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are both really good. The smaller one is easier to carry and handle but the bigger one has a huge mixing space. To be honest I think they are both suitable for studio or outdoor work. Some people complain about the larger one not snapping shut - its not tight and can fall open. For me its not a big problem. If I want it to stay shut if Im going out with it I can put an elastic band around it.

      If you cant find the Holbien there is an aluminium version - also made in the far East that is used by a lot of really great artists over there ( Nagayama uses a large version ) Its available on Ebay. Thank god for Ebay, there is very little in the shops here.
