  • Vienne was an important city at the time of the Roman Empire , known by the Latin name of Vienna (whilst Vienna in Austria was called by its ancient name Vindobona).
It was the capital of the Allobroges ( Gallic people ) before the Roman conquest. Transformed into a Roman colony in 47 BC under Julius Caesar , Vienne formed an important urban center, ideally located along the Rhone on a major communication axis. The Emperor Augustus banished the son of Herod the Great , the ethnarch Herod Archelaus, to Vienne in the year 6 AD.
As a former Roman provincial capital, Vienne today preserves many ancient remains. The city was also an important ancient bishopric in Christian Gaul. Its most famous bishop was Avitus of Vienne. At the Council of Vienne, which met in the city in October 1131, Pope Clement V abolished the Order of the Knights Templar . In the Middle Ages , Vienne was part of the Kingdom of Provence, dependent on the Holy Roman Empire ; on the opposite bank of the Rhône was the Kingdom of France , which made the city strategically important.
