  • 12 inches = 1foot. Measuring in feet is different than measuring in inches because feet are longer than inches. It takes fewer feet then inches to measure the length of an object. The word feet is used when talking about more than 1 foot. We explain non-standard measurement units compared to standard. We measure objects that are longer than our ruler. We measure an object to the nearest inch, then we measure it to the nearest foot. We discuss how we can measure our height by laying on the floor, marking the location of our head and feet with tape, then measuring the distance between the tape. We circle the measurement unit that makes sense in a sentence. We end the lesson with a silly pun: If our nose was 12 inches long, it would be a foot. Check out the story of Oliver Smoot Jr., a 5 ft 7 in MIT student. His height was used as a non-standard measure to measure the Harvard Bridge. interestingeng...
