This is what happened when such a beloved character is given to writer that has no idea what to do with it. Kid jonathan wasn't loved cause he was a kid. Not just that. But he had a story, a personality. When bembos aged him up he created a pointless Jon. He b3came a flat himbo without a real purpose but to be 'the new superman'. But his father, again, has a stoey, a personality and conflict. This jon has nothing. You can't tell what moves him, what he wants or where he is going. On paper this could've really worked out well. Jon having anxiety about becoming the entire worlds strongest defender would actually go well with his character. Jon is at his heart his fathers son, but he also is the son of Lois Lane, too which means he will always question everything, including himself. Him thusly getting doubts about beeing ready to step into his fathers footsteps seems like a logical conclussion, esspecially if you consider that Jon normally always had back-up in some form, either beeing his father or Damian. Thrust someone like this suddenly into such a vital position on his own, and yeah, Jons decision to focus on Metropolis only would make total sense. The reason why the actuall printed version doesn't work is also simple: This is not a quickly told story. This kind of character evolution needs to happen naturally over a longer period of time. Jon needs to grow up naturally for this to work. Let him have his early adventures as a pre-teen with Damian as the Super-Sons or together with his father for example first for some years, and then when you know there is nothing left worth telling about this part of his live let him slowly grow up into a teen, both visually as well as a character. Build him up until this point were Jon slowly but surely has to face adulthood, starting with a storyline like this were he, out of sheer fear, only starts protecting Metropilis while either Kara or his dad still do their part as experienced heroes. Add to Jons, build even more on his character and symbolize him not beeing ready just like in this comic by not letting him have a cape yet. Do this for some time with some great storys until everyone knows what needs to happen next. After many years were Jon would've grown into a person worthy of his familys crest leading into an epic story in which he triumphantly and finally inherits his fathers title as the new man of tomorrow. It needs to be done in a way that instills not just happiness from the readers, but also as sort of a sense of pride seeing this character whose story we'd have followed for years at that point to succeed in the biggest way possible, aka the maximum amount of payoff. Long story short: This future states story doesn't work because DC tries to eat its cake before it's even baked yet.
Well said. DC rushed Jon up so no character development could occur. They also gloss over the fact that unlike most other heroes (especially Clark and Kara), Jon grew up in the hero setting from childhood as well as had two realized Kryptonians who could've helped him. He's been around many heroes that could've influenced him as well. We got no explanation as to what happened between he and Clark or whey he and Kara seem to be at odds. Having two issues to try and flesh those details out, introduce a new big issue with Braincells is asking for a disaster. We didn't even get any flashbacks that would help explain Jon's situation and what led him to this point. Unlike the new Batman, Wonder Woman, and other new characters, people who read DC knew the young Jon so we'd all be interested in what led to this (as opposed to kind of accepting it as you would with a brand new character. I feel like since aging him up, Jon's really served no actual purposes other than to dismantle the familial aspect Action Comics had. Having him in LoSH made he and Mon-El (who is now apparently his descendant) redundancies since Mon El was supposed to be the Superman equivalent in the 31st Century. Then bringing him back to present aged up pushes Conner out of a role as well. All of that and we really have nothing good or considered "worth it". All in all, you analogy works perfectly, DC had all the ingredients but decided to rush things forward unbaked
yeah. And they basically usurped connor, as he was always hyped up as becoming the new superman, but then jon took his place before he could even become superman. And the thing is, connor is the better character, as he's been built up for decades, letting us grow with him and accept when he becomes superman because you know his struggles. And it opens up so many new story ideas, like the fact that the new superman is lex's son.
I can't believe Future State was so Short but I really liked *Yara Flor and the new Kaldr'ahm* so I hope they're stories continue 🤔 I could live without the rest of Future State
Based on Jon's team up with wonder woman where he immediately starts saving the world, not just metropolis, its clear the writers don't know what to do with him. Everything he does is undone a comic later. Maybe thats more natural, in reality we all make decisions and break them. But in fiction it just comes off as chaotic and hard to read
When they showed the 4 Superman my thought was "Why didn't they start with this?" even with two issues they could've divided it into four parts with each part revealing a different wrong John had done as Superman of Metropolis and why as he faces off against a different version of his father in each part giving the story a central theme of him living upto the legacy and how he's different and just leave Supergirl out of it.
You can honestly tell this was rushed, because some books got 4 issues, and some like these got 2. Where did that energy go to, a Bat book most likely. Oh yeah Braincell... "I'm good now", Jon and Kara: "Okay WE believe you.'
It feels like somebody saying "wrap it up" in the background. When they're supposed to making us take these concepts seriously when from the jump some people kinda felt they were gonna half-ass this.

Yeah so this like sucks right? I sure hope the book with Kal is better and actually understands the characters. This just feels super weird. Also… Superman isn’t the most powerful character in the universe right? So like… Supergirl wouldn’t be either I assume? Even if her powers were and I assume are exactly the same as Superman, she wouldn’t be the most powerful person. It’s really weird for her to say that. It’s also really off putting (even if she was the most powerful person in the universe) for her or anyone to just claim that and believe it. Feels really big headed and arrogant. Not very heroic imo. I don’t know, this whole book makes me cry uncomfortable so far 🤷♂️
DC might be better of revealing this as an Elseworlds story rather than as an actual future for Jonathan- time will tell once they decide what stays and what direction it goes in. Great breakdown of the series Sasha- if you were presenting this as a thesis on comic stories as modern mythology it would have gotten an A+. Dr. Woods? Well that certainly has a nice ring to it...
between this and the history of the dcu I think there are many people who believe that "dc superhero girls" shows a precise version of superman and his relationship with supergirl
Nice ensemble, Sasha, you never cease to amaze me with your outfits and accessories. Getting back to the issue at hand, I found this outing very disjointed and I have to agree that it left generated many more questions than profound answers. The art is beautiful but the concept of integrating an action-packed adventure story with character psychoanalysis simply was meh. Really, was Jonathan Kent that insecure in his Superman persona living in the shadows of a greater hero, his father? It almost sounds like one of the writers has daddy issues and needed to broadcast it as nonchalantly as possible. Despite the art, it was definitely not one of my favorite storylines.
It's ironic how Luthor took down Superman in 'The Red Sun' by making him realize that stagnating humanity's evolution is no different than how Brainiac bottles up all those cities in his collection - you don't really protect anything by keeping it at constant status quo.
I've only really bothered with the bats and supes future state stuff but Superman of Metropolis has been my favourite. Yeah, it's silly and flawed and overwritten and breathless... But that's kinda how I like my Superman. Good old, silver age nonsense!
Sasha. Gurrl. You nearly gave me a heart attack. I glanced up at the screen when the episode proper started and thought those were blood drips down your top. Never again shall I approach you unawares! So uh... Thanks for being uninjured I guess???
wow this one is kind of out there, i agree we can see what the writer is doing. it's just a lot of things are happening and we are not getting a good enough reason as to why we just have to take the writers word that this is the "situation" and these are the "results."
Well, this was certainly something. It honestly feels like neither Kara nor John were even understood as characters by the author. This was legitimately just not a good take on either of them. PS. Anyone remember when Johnathan Kent was supposed to eventually turn into the new version of Superboy Prime? I guess they just dropped that storyline for angsty Supuerman.
From what I can tell about Future State from watching Sasha is that it seems very rushed and thrown together. Although the artwork has either been good or great depending on the issue.
Oh, I love your channel and think you're terrific, a new Linsday, as was about to go all out how to draw any pose videos. But I think your stuff is fun and great, but I think about being a little kid in 1970 and seeing an issue of Action comics with Neal Adams lithe and superior Superman flying on the cover. But there is nothing for me here, as don't know what thsi crap is about, as If it were up to me, THE Last thing I would do would be make Superman deal with the Bush family dynamics. I think again as a boy, saw this better done by Bob Haney.
Who ever is writing FS;Superman is literally turning me from the rest of Future State. It just feels totally antithetical to anything Superman related. Like it's a different character, with the same names on it.
IDK why jon gets so much flak for bottling metropolis to protect it. Everyone is saying 'fight! to protect'. He's not as strong as superman. Always just being invincible is one of the things that makes superman so boring, IMO. The only pain Supes gets is the emotional kind when lois marries his best friend, best hero team up, dad, and worst enemy and many more! Probably why we get so many "lois marries" stories XD Does Sasha have a cold? Looks like under her cute nose is red. Could be the combination of make up
It's so disappointing what they are doing with Jonathan here. He had loads of potential until they aged him up and now they don't know what to do for him. Hopefully he'll get a writer who will actually do him some justice one day.
While still weird I just realized, 5G! That's why there are 4 supermans, not 3. 4 generations + Jon the new one = 5 G (generations) Still weird but it was likely written to tie into that original theme for futurestate
Can’t talk about Jon, haven’t been reading comics since before New 52 and I’m just coming back now, but I can talk about Kara cause I’ve been reading her and tbh I hate her interaction with Jon... it just rubs me off horribly and I was a bit taken aback when reading her solo comic in future state because of the whole “birthright” thing
I agree. It makes her sound much more like Zod. She's looking down at Jon because he's only half Kryptonian (its similar to how the had her treat Conner/Kon-El in N52 for being a clone). Idk why anyone would think how she interacted with Jon sounds heroic.
@@BluemoonLacrymosa yes! I read a fair bit of her early 2000s run and while her relationship with Conner wasn’t the best she didn’t hate him or anything, and correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t she call him a slur or something?
Who is the hater who always comes in with a thumbs down as soon as you post? lol... Like they wait eagerly each day to view your newest video and dislike it. Some people really need something better in their lives.
If you want another Superman like character, make an original background character that has some similar powers and similar morals to that of Superman. Reroll the die if you will. Make a character so good that I get pulled into his or her story and I forget all about Superman. Make me wonder about this NEW character and make me want to be this new character in my dreams. I wish I could do what "new character" can do. That would be awesome. Stop giving a uniform to someone else and calling them the same name as the old character. They aren't the old character. They never will be. Stop dressing them up as something they aren't.
Future state has potential but it’s executed like giving a bunch of middle schoolers with vague knowledge of comic books crayons and paper and tell them to make a new superhero
Look, I get that Batman is DC's bread and butter, but the really screwed over a lot of other titles. With every book being its own thing, 2 issues is nowhere near enough for new stories to begin, build, and finish. We just get tossed into situations with no explanation. What happened between Jon and Clark, why is Kara sounding almost as xenophobic as Zod, etc. Also, between this and SM/WW, I would feel just as bottled with Jon being ever present
that's a terrible ending, bottling up the city should've been a MUCH bigger deal than they made it out to be, it's not bad because he doesn't deserve forgiveness or anything like that, but really? he apologized and that's it? "sorry for putting you in a bottle, can't promise it's not gonna happen again.", I don't want a "I don't trust Superman" story, but at the same time he did something terrible and got away way too easily with it
I like most of future state.. the books I skipped were, this and kara's book.. flash and green lantern.. they didn't spark any interest.. but the rest I enjoyed..some were really good
What if future state is sometimes intentionally because some of the people in charge hate legacy characters but give them in a bad way so people will drop it??
Kara was the best part of this for me, just can't connect with this version. Agree the rushed pace of Future State is a problem. Love most of the art so far though
You know a comic is bad when even Sasha has trouble being positive about it. I mean this is a lady whose unbridled enthusiasm can make you wanna read superman's girlfriend Lois Lane
This version of Jon is lame (I wished Conner was the successor instead) and this story feels pointless. How are we supposed to care about Jon's daddy issue if we know very little about his relationship with Clark prior to this event? This story barely explores what it means to be a legacy character.
He bottled the city like he bottled his feelings.
Yeah he's really gotta stop bottling up his emotions.

Yo... Your style is ON FLEEK as usual!!! That’s what the kids say, right?
9:01 me neither
I am glad bottled cities don't exist, I don't think I could resist the urge to shake them.
Watching you while waiting for the bus
Yeah, if there’s something I don’t like about Future State, it’s how rushed most of them feel and how you’re thrust upon these stories without any reference to the stuff that’s apparently going on. I like some of these stories, but I hate how they just throw you to the lions like that.
I love how every video I'm she has a different color hair.
You know our beloved host is gonna watch the new Superman show. Hope we can get a review... with a new hairdo.
Sasha I know comics is your thing, but PLEASE do a wig roundup video one day! I'm dying to find out where I can get some of those absolutely stunning units for myself!
That glass breaking panel is really nice!
Oh my god, that wig + shirt combo... transcendent
Wait Black Shirt and Jeans... Conor is that you?
between this and the history of the dcu I think there are many people who believe that "dc superhero girls" shows a precise version of superman and his relationship with supergirl
Yeah all the ideas in these last two issues have been really interesting and having that be two issues is probably the books biggest problem I think.
Came for the wig, and the salt. Was not disappointed.
This issue seems to bottle alot stuff up inside not very healthy if you ask me... JK awesome video as always 👍👍
I love this Future State coverage!!
I've only really bothered with the bats and supes future state stuff but Superman of Metropolis has been my favourite. Yeah, it's silly and flawed and overwritten and breathless... But that's kinda how I like my Superman. Good old, silver age nonsense!
Now I REALLY gotta watch Superman & Lois, even if just for Jon now
Sasha. Gurrl. You nearly gave me a heart attack. I glanced up at the screen when the episode proper started and thought those were blood drips down your top. Never again shall I approach you unawares! So uh... Thanks for being uninjured I guess???
I loved your analysis! Great 👍 video!
wow this one is kind of out there, i agree we can see what the writer is doing. it's just a lot of things are happening and we are not getting a good enough reason as to why we just have to take the writers word that this is the "situation" and these are the "results."
At 2:20... why is that 13 year old’s head on a 25 year old body
You are rait
I don't know the way that artist draws jon is so wierd.
And ywt....so on point XD it's basically a methaphor what DC did to jon.
Well he is like 16 in a 20 something body
I really think it's a cliche troupe to have the son resent the Fathers shadow. I would have liked to seen a more well adjusted Jon.
From what I can tell about Future State from watching Sasha is that it seems very rushed and thrown together. Although the artwork has either been good or great depending on the issue.
One of my favorite Sasha quotes:
New Huntress who dis?
That almost goes along with: “did anyone read it? No! Did anyone care? No!”
Please review Future State: Superwoman! I’m currently in college and I do not have time to read it.
I think I am in love with your wig omg
I can't believe I'm saying "I miss Bendis writing Jon."
I really miss Damian and Jon...😔
The ‘fit today got me like 👁👄👁
That crucifix pose. Jeesh-sus!
Jesus of Metropolis lol
Who ever is writing FS;Superman is literally turning me from the rest of Future State.
It just feels totally antithetical to anything Superman related. Like it's a different character, with the same names on it.
IDK why jon gets so much flak for bottling metropolis to protect it. Everyone is saying 'fight! to protect'. He's not as strong as superman. Always just being invincible is one of the things that makes superman so boring, IMO.
The only pain Supes gets is the emotional kind when lois marries his best friend, best hero team up, dad, and worst enemy and many more! Probably why we get so many "lois marries" stories XD
Does Sasha have a cold? Looks like under her cute nose is red. Could be the combination of make up
It's so disappointing what they are doing with Jonathan here. He had loads of potential until they aged him up and now they don't know what to do for him. Hopefully he'll get a writer who will actually do him some justice one day.
While still weird I just realized, 5G! That's why there are 4 supermans, not 3. 4 generations + Jon the new one = 5 G (generations)
Still weird but it was likely written to tie into that original theme for futurestate
My question after all this is dose Lois know all the things clark did to her in the silver age or the times she got married.
I read a fair bit of her early 2000s run and while her relationship with Conner wasn’t the best she didn’t hate him or anything, and correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t she call him a slur or something?
it's like they wanted to make him gohan and then crap all over him and superman.
I see the "clones" as the broad and very off interpretations of those era's of Clark as well.
Who is the hater who always comes in with a thumbs down as soon as you post? lol... Like they wait eagerly each day to view your newest video and dislike it. Some people really need something better in their lives.
I'm just wondering how Jon can crash through the glass in the backup, when he destroyed the glass in his issue. Continuity error anyone?
"sorry for putting you in a bottle, can't promise it's not gonna happen again.", I don't want a "I don't trust Superman" story, but at the same time he did something terrible and got away way too easily with it
That outfit is killer
I like most of future state.. the books I skipped were, this and kara's book.. flash and green lantern.. they didn't spark any interest.. but the rest I enjoyed..some were really good
Please please please give us the T about Superwoman!!
You are a Legendary Icon
What if future state is sometimes intentionally because some of the people in charge hate legacy characters but give them in a bad way so people will drop it??
Ojalá
Kara was the best part of this for me, just can't connect with this version. Agree the rushed pace of Future State is a problem. Love most of the art so far though
You know a comic is bad when even Sasha has trouble being positive about it. I mean this is a lady whose unbridled enthusiasm can make you wanna read superman's girlfriend Lois Lane
We need a video about future state superwoman
How are there 0 views with 21 comments? YT, make it make sense. 😂
*Lillie writes down Oc mean Out of Character*
Lillie: “So that what Oc mean.”
(Goes back through every previous video where I thought Sasha meant "Orange County")
😉
My Instagram has been nothing but future state 🤦♂️
This version of Jon is lame (I wished Conner was the successor instead) and this story feels pointless. How are we supposed to care about Jon's daddy issue if we know very little about his relationship with Clark prior to this event? This story barely explores what it means to be a legacy character.
Talk about superwoman pleaseeeeee. I need your input
i'm loving this hair
