I think people forget that Nico and Bianca were in the lotus casino for 70 years and I don't remember the decade the story is set in but in the later books of PJO they reference mount St. Helens erupting which took place in 1982 so they were probably in the casino since the 1910's when homosexuals were persecuted in public and its hard adjusting to new social standards
