I can see Ares getting tired of Frank causing war but trying to end it, which is a contradiction for Ares

I guess they are trying to make Frankie look so bad that marvel discontinues his arc, because "vigilantism is bad" or some shit. They are trying to make him a joke. Just like they made Aries a joke. If he can only get a win against a mortal known as the punisher, oh how far he has fallen. They both should be able to take on damn near anyone in marvel, because they have a brain and normally know how to use it.

They just aren't giving Frank Batman-esque plot armor. His superpower is "Guy with a gun". Literally half a step above the guys Spidey leaves hanging from a lightpost with a note on them.

I know it's nuts to bring reality into comic books but every time some writer pits Frank against anyone who actually shows up as more than a blip on a power scale, its insane to me.

I find Marvel's portrayal of Ares to be particularly lacking in strength. One of my main criticisms of Marvel is that they have chosen to label gods as aliens in their universe, rather than acknowledging them as real deities. This decision was likely made in order to create a more balanced power dynamic among characters.🤨
Edit: In the end, Marvel's version of Ares is still great.👍

The Ares six issue mini that launched the character was fire. I really despise how poorly he was treated... just used him to make Sentry look good.
I mean it wasn't just sentry, ares lost to a lot of characters wayyy before Sentry. He lost to Hulk, Thor, Ultron, Doctor Doom, Morgan le Faye and a list of others. The void killing ares wasn't needed to make sentry look good he already had other showings for that. Marvels ares was never as powerful as Hercules or Thor so it's not bad writing.

I think its awesome that this story kinda implies when Frank became The Punisher in MAX when he was in vietnam the voice he was speaking to was Ares the God of War, which would also explain some plot armor. But still its awesome to think punisher gave his soul to ares
