- Decided to test how fast my 1979 Harley Davidson Shovelhead FXS 80 would go. Will it do better than 70 mph? Before doing so, I got to meet a new youtuber by the name of Country Coder who lives not too far away from me.

the shovelhead has one of the best harley sounds ever, yours sounds great also!
Thanks, man!
My 73 Shovel gets up to 70 with ease. I haven't tried to see how fast it goes as I'm not interested in top end. I'm about cruising and listening to the song being sung and enjoying my ride. 65-70 is typically what I'm cruising at. 48 on the rear as well. Ive been over 80 but to pass and get out in frt. At 65-70 my bike is very smooth but I don't notice much vibration at any speed only at idle. Don't really have issues with bolts either but I check it over usually before or after a ride or when cleaning it up. Maintenance is the key brother. I'm at 4k miles after my rebuild and she runs better all the time. Occasionally a small leak but easy fixes. It's all part of owning a shovel. I won't ride anything newer myself. Im 58 now and fully enjoy my rides wherever I go. Shovels do sound sweet I love mine...✌️
Agreed. I have an 08 fxdwg and it's my enjoy my time bike and thats exactly what a good cruiser is for. Bought a old vtr 1000 superhawk to go fast.
I had a Shovel and I did reach 80 with it was well, but at that speed it vibrated like crazy, at 70 it vibrated a lot as well, but not as much.
I've done 130 on mine and it had more to go. It also has a 96ci s&s motor, s&s carburetor, 2 spark plugs per cylinder, s&s racing cam, straight drag pipes.
Staying on the back roads is the way I like to ride. I'm hoping my 58 runs in that range. 65 sounds perfect for your shovel. Love it. Thanks for your content. Please keep it coming.
I don’t own one but you’re right nothing sounds like a shovel 🤘🏼
Yeah, except an Ironhead - you know, the 1st Shovel head. Lol
In the eighties I test road-tested a Shovelhead Glide without the fairing or the saddlebags. You had a belt primary drive and a belt secondary drive and the bike was smooth as silk the owner got drunk and destroyed it a week after he bought the motorcycle. Such a waste of a nice Harley.
Bummer!
I appreciate you showing inside the restaurant and showing the food at the start. I live in the UK and love America and those barbeque places.
We don't have them over here.
The food is different depending where you go in the U.S. This is typical southern bbq.
Had a 81 wide glide. I rode all over AZ and NorCal. Moved to Ocean City MD and did a complete rebuild in 91. Rode that bike until 98 had very few issues even after a 93CI stroker build. Wish I still had it. Love those Shovels.
A 3 tooth smaller rear sprocket AND a 2 tooth larger front sprocket, is quite a change!!! One tooth up front equals 2 rear teeth, so you made a 5 tooth change. That's huge!! Too huge for us western boys with our mountains. On my 03, 1200 Sporty, I changed the front from a 29 (883's come with 28 tooth front sprocket) tooth to a 30 tooth. Giving it a slight overdrive and reducing the 65mph engine speed by 140rpm or so.
Sweet!!!
On my 2012 Dyna, it was too over geared. Not enough hill power. So changed the front tooth from a 32 tooth, to a 31 tooth. It gave me 140 extra rpm at 70mph. Which was perfect for my 96inch motor and our mountains. Sure, I could just crunch the throttle and made the engine climb the grades, but the extra 140rpm brought the engine into a perfect sweet-spot at 70mph. Or about 2600rpm at 66mph instead of 70mph. Both changes, changed my speedo's by about 4mph. Love them both now.
Interestingly, I also own an 06 Yamaha Stratoliner, 1854cc cruiser. It's a little under geared. Has about 90hp at the rear wheel. Cruises at 2800rpm at a true 70mph. Several Stratoliner and Roadliner owners, have purchased a 65 tooth Harley rear sprocket, to replace their OEM, 70 tooth rear sprocket. It works great, but has the same "too much of a change" problem. I think the riders that love it the most are low country riders like yourself. Anyway, always love your videos.
Yeah in the mountains, you pretty much need to be geared lower. There are no mountains anywhere near me.
Definitely enjoy meeting and hanging out with you and the misses. Glad your shovel will handle that sleep. Thought about adjusting my Africa Twin some to lower the rpms on it.
Thanks for the invite out!
@@SaddleTrampTV not a problem.. anytime.
Always nice to get more out of your bike than you thought. I love the sound of that bike. My buddy rides a 1959 Pan Head with a hand shifter and he loves that bike. There is just more class in the older bikes and you know how to keep them running. Ride Safe
Yeah I agree
Dawns here ☀️
I know it goes faster than what I'd trust myself with!
Lol... You reckon?
Corey, that sweet spot seems perfect. I foresee a lot of perfect days on the road for you. Thanks for Sharing!
OMG, when Carson approached me at the Get On Moto Fest, he said that he was a big fan and started a channel, asked if he could fallow me around and learned some things, I said no, but you can hang with me all you want, we test road some Indians and have been friends ever since, awesome channels, both of y'all!
He's a really good guy
Of all the shows I watch on a weekly basis, I look forward to SaddleTramp video releases the most. If I ever get down to Mississippi on my old Shovel maybe we could ride together for a few miles and you could show me some of those good BBQ joints. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, man. That means a lot.
You are right it sounds great like a motorcycle should sound. Great video Cory. Nice to see Kim on there also. Stay safe. Say hi for me.
Thanks! Will do!
Also , much beter than looking down at the tank .
Watching now Amigo. much love and respect! love your content! SPORTSTER4LIFE
Thanks, my friend!
@@SaddleTrampTV absolutely ANY time buddy. I appreciate you and I love supporting those who support the overall mission of being KINDER, NICER & following their spirit, no holds bar🗝👊
My shovel likes 60 to 70. Vibrates lots and of course bolts come-out even with lock tight. Right now in in guatemala riding around volcanos. Nice Ride
As long as you're enjoying it top speed is irrelevant...It's how it makes you feel when you're riding it that counts!
My 75 fxe has a 45 tooth rear, others sprockets are stock.
Rebuilt engine 3 years ago. Overbore .050” with new old stock 10:1 pistons and a HB cam. Cleaned up the ports in the heads.
Put a Evo CV carb and true dual pipes with old style fishtails. These sound great with a little rumble on deceleration.
This combo really runs strong with premium gas and the torque at around 2000 rpm and up is a big improvement over stock. Can pass other vehicles with ease.
Live in the Houston area and everyone drives 80 mph or more on freeways. Bike handles 80 easy but my neck not as well…
Get out of town and will run 65-70 all day and can see what’s in the mirrors.
The pistons came with rings, the oil ring is the old style one piece and these will use 1/2 qt oil every 2000 miles or so.
Biggest issue with having a shovelhead is getting good parts for rebuilds. If you can find new old stock, this is the best and you are good to go. Good used parts are good if you look it over very carefully. The after market stuff is a crap shoot if it’s junk or good to use. Looks like most of it is made by the same supplier and relabeled for different end user. S & S is good if you can afford it.
Get a lot of good comments on the shovel, you don’t see many being ridden anymore.
Hi, my friend
Wow! It's a video that gives me so much excitement and fun
Have a happy day
👍👍👍
What a cool place you and Coder were at, looks like fun. Love your content and the antique rides.
Thank you, Bells
I couldn’t get my new ‘09 96’’ Nighttrain over 65mph. I put in new motorcraft plugs , re- did the breather (so the carb would stop sucking oil out of the rocker boxes), cleaned the carb and put in race gas 104 octane- hello 95mph! I did these mods to my next bike as well.
That's a great bike! I have a 92 Sporty 883 that I'm changing sprockets on currently. I want to go to a 46 tooth rear & replace the stock 21 tooth in the front. I'd like to be able to cruise @ around 70 easily on the freeway.... Keep safe!
Always great to see your videos. Thank you for sharing.
Ditto.👊👊👊
That was a great video. Really gave me a idea to see how fast my Ironhead Sportster will go.
Glad it helped!
@@SaddleTrampTV it did Tramp. My Sportster is stripped down to the minimal amount of what’s needed.
@@hack2it mine likes 65 real well.( Chopped up back alley bitch) CUBAB.
@@hack2it so is mine!!
🤘😎
What? No premier? I’m skunkwinkled!
Too short for a premeire.
Watch out for 🦌 deer crossing ! 😊😊
My 1967 Electraglide all stock pinned the speedo @ 120 with my girlfriend on back WOT...👍
Bull spit
@@motorcyclemark2889 100 % fact..{ let me edit this } all I got to say is I bought the bike in 1981 @ Ghost Motorcycles in Port Washington NY, all original looking the motor looked to me that it was never opened up but it was 14 years old when I bought it, so maybe there was mods to it I didnt know. WE ran 85 all the time & mine topped out at 120..
Early to mid 1970's speed limit on SOME sections of interstates were posted 70 MPH ("You kids get off my lawn!" ...LOL!) .... Shovel or ironhead = check fasteners about once a week along with other maintenance stuff IMHO... Not a fan of Loctite for steel threads into aluminum. (THIN anti seize & check to spec periodically)...UNLESS manual calls for it (usually steel thread to steel thread application OR lock tab washers/safety wire drilled, "castle" nut w/cotter pin, etc.)... Just MY opinion for the older models
I also use anti-seize on all steel bolts into aluminium, and use new lock washers (with the slash cut) to prevent them backinh out. I tend to use locktite when I feel the required torque is too high.
awesome video as always and it's always cool to meet somebody new 👍
Awesome 👊🧷
We should take a ride on both the Shovels one day, how sweet sounding it will be my brother! L&R
Blessings
Sure thing
The first clip of your buddy riding up to the parking lot I thought Wow! A Honda Transalp. Nope, just an Africa Twin, but still a cool bike.
Slow down and enjoy the scenery
😎👍
Right on
Anything over 50mph and I need to know how fast it’ll stop
I've had better brakes to be honest.
I'm going to try that gearing 22 48 on my shovel great content look forward to more
i'll check out his channel ! 66 sweet spot eh? downhill does it get to 87 mph? awesome machine !!!!
Lol. I'll have to go back to N.C. to see.
I remember when the shed was just a KOA campground
My Ironhead has standard 21t up front with a 45t (down from 51) rear, and seems happy in the 60-65mph range (read from GPS). I've seen 100mph, but only on the stock speedo so probably closer to 90, and my vision was actually blurring the vibration was so bad.
I changed my rear to a 78 ironhead from 51 to 45 too, but I changed my front from 21 to 22 and still had alot of power best thing I've ever done super smooth 👌 🍻🍻
It’s good to know what your max speed in case you get pulled over by a cop sometime you know exactly how fast you can go and how fast you’re not going . Stay safe my friend 😎👍
That worked for me once. The cop said I was doing over 120 mph. I said bullshit, it'll only do 115.
LOL
No sweat, love my shovel!! Nothing sounds or feels like a shovel, mine has straight pipes, nice and loud....
Agreed!
I have an amf 1974 74" shovel .
Cone motor kick electric . 1985 86 before helmat law ? I rebuilt the motor 3 5/8 barrels , cam , s&s super d , lightened flywheels . Stripped down frame . Bad ass.
Put about 500 miles on it no problem .
Got on i5 one day and opened it up .
75 no problem . 80 85 couldn't see out the mirror but nice cruising speed . 90 starting to shake . I kept going 96 bamo ! I got hit in the chest and the face . Came off the throttle let it roll down .
Scared the hell out of me . All that work down the drain .
Turned out the zipper on my chaps worked its way up and and the right leg blew up . Bike was all good .
Kept under 85 after that .
Nice, love the shovelhead sound,I got a twin cam A motor in my chopper, its hard to find a good running shovelhead in Canada in the province I'm from, they're there but usually beat up or expensive, like my twinkies, got rid of the efi and out a mikuni on it and a thunderheart stand alone ignition runs great.
Which app did you use? I need that for my pickup, I'm using the tack, maybe you could mount on on front to use as guide for speed.
It's by "DigiHud"
@@SaddleTrampTV thanks
Sounds great amigo enjoy the ride.
Thanks!
Hé Tramp, ik zie dat het weer goed is daar. Vat geen kou boy..veel plezier daar. 55 miles is een mooie speed. MAKE LOVE NOT WAR..😇✌
Amen
Yeah, like HE SED!😊
I'll buy that for a dollar! I know exactly what ur dealing with. All my Harleys were 4sps. It does definitely have a sweet spot where all ur bones don't shake loose! Thx for sharing
So it's not just me then. Pretty cool.
That Shovel sound though...can't be beat ✌😎
You're right about that, man!
If I'd known you were in Tampa I'd have taken you for a Cuban Sammich.
Maybe next time around.
I'd put up with adjusting valves for the legendary shovelhead ride and sound. Running open pipes causes valve issues lol but quiet sucks
my 76 pan shovel runs smooth at 70, but sweet spot is about 65+. You are right about the EVO. My 96 rattles my balls off
My curiosity is not satisfied yet, Tramp. I'm curious as to what you do for a living.
Sweet bike btw
I'm Q.C. and safety guy where I work. The one everyone loves to hate.
Wow, you're getting high tech! That phonometer is pretty cool. I thought you were going to have your wife follow in truck, monitor, and document. 😀
Bike is perfect as far as I'm concerned.
Thanks!
I used to ride a 76 Shovelhead it loved 70 and 80
We didn't get to see how fast it was though. That was just cruising. Nice bike man.
I was in Biloxi Friday. I almost went to The Shed but a big plate of crawfish won out.
Crawfish wins out every time with me.
Bike sounds great!
I agree!
Subscribed to Country Coder!
Good deal, man!
My 103HO will cruise 80mph at 3k rpm and maybe best sounding Harley all around I heard with 2 into 1 exhaust but top speed power seems lacking. My 99 VMAX 1200 on the other hand will take you faster than most people wish to go I have been 145 mph in a mist simply checking to make sure oil level high enough to not trigger low oil level red light upon full throttle v-boost acceleration. Damn why did I not test for total top speed while I was at it? Peace love and light bro corey
What did you say you did to your gearing? It sound like you hit the sweet spot for 65 mph cruising with whatever you have one the front and rear sprockets. Thanks!
22 up front with a 48 at the wheel.
@@SaddleTrampTV Thanks for that! I got an early 78 FLH 1200 that I'm about 2 days away from firing up. Good information. Thanks again.
Been enjoying your Channel Tramp !
Now i ride a 69 Shovelhead FLPS 4 speed with new a cone bottom end it likes 50-55mph with probably need's pulling apart.
Has a really comfy Pogo Saddle .it's great like riding a fair ground Horse just Bobbing along ;-)
The motor has a whine like some Shovelheads....not got any worse in 15 years
Pacific Mike mentioned
The lower end bearings could be be a little loud and be just fine. Hard to say.
Sometimes you gotta just wait and see.
Sometimes there's a gear whine from the cam gear running on the pinion gear.
Is it just me or do Shovelheads make strange noise's sometimes...i do love em
Back in 83 i'd run at 120mph + on an tuned Evo sweet sweet engines they are indeed.
i won my 1st auction a 97 Sportster 883 6k mls & i am very impressed sounds like its bullet proof
may not go like Snot off a Stick but i'm chuffed to bits with it.
also Been Running a 2016 Chieftain 111 ThunderStroke, since 5 years ,,, the Indian oils are way to thin for Summer other than that a sweet machine too
Tink 🏴☠✌
That scooter sounds good! Would like to know what app that is too
It's from DigiHub. You can download it for free on google play.
I love antique bikes. I guess that makes me an antique.
Me too
I’m headed to Wheels through time July 4th weekend. Can’t wait
Love your channel!! Honest clean content, keep it up!!
Thank you! Will do!
You can make it read off of the tranny like the fl's did. I did it to my '76 FXE. If ya get a min you can check it out, just search "FXE Basket Case" here on TH-cam and it'll pop right up. I can go over what you'll need to put the speedo drive on the tranny. No modifications, just a few parts
Yeah, I've looked into that before. My transmission case doen't have the output gear for that. I know I can find the case somewhere, but I'm just not up for the task.
@@SaddleTrampTV Nor did mine. It should have the boss in the case where the speedo drive goes as most fx model 4 speeds do. They just put a lil block of plate over the opening and wallah, fl tranny case! Now as for the lil worm drive gear, ya just gotta order the $30 lil skinny speedo gear, remove transmission shaft & put said shaft in the freezer overnight, and then heat up new gear a lil bit take the shaft outta freezer and gear will go right on there by gloved hand. Then just buy a cable & speedo drive unit. Easy squeezy
I was sure I could have been competitive on the Isle Of Man on some country back roads in my town the other day… look down at the speedometer… 45mph!
Lol... That's funny
Did you say you have a 22T Tranny sprocket? If I'm not mistaken the stock one was a 23T, like your buddy said you can cruise all day at 80 if you want to!
Yeah 22 with a 48
Hey officer I thought I was doing 55mph not 65 lol 😆 😅 well that's what it felt like 😅. Seriously though bike sounding great 👍
😅
Nice bike now to ride it down to Florida & meet up with shovelheadffej.
That would certainly create some war stories.
@@SaddleTrampTV I bet he has a few
i ve run 24 tooth engine 24 tooth primary 51 tooth rear wheel for 50 years works good for me what are the height and width and brand bars are you runing thank you happy trails
The are 12" in height and meant for a wide glide application.
And your bike sweet spot??? 55-60???
I know of a 1200 Custom that was still climbing at 105 mph
As fast as you want it to be when the cops or CHP are not steaking out! 👍
I have a 1990 fxrs with 7512 miles on it it runs at 2800 at 60...I also have a 72 ,75 iron head sportsters and a 2000 1200.all 3 sportsters will run 70 all day...your shovel isnt even breaking a sweat at 70..I just sold my 77 sporty, oil leaker with 38 k on it and still running strong.lol in my opinion, your shovel is the coolest bike you have...god bless dude.hope to see you around sometime.the fxrs is a 5 speed ,so what does that tell you?
It can do 70 but I would rather do 65 and enjoy the vibration and feelings of getting there
Same
Most of riding a shovel, pan or knuck is knowing more about the engine than how to start it and check the oil. Not sure how many commenters realize that the crank pin that the rods ride on is threaded into the counter weights of the crankshaft and if whomever had that apart last didn't know what they were doing OR the engine has had several jug and piston replacement overhauls and never had the cases split or someone has been over reving the engine trying to go 100 mph then all the gripes from the guys that had lots of vibration were most likely caused by the crank pin loosening enough for the counterweights to be matched up incorrectly and causing an offset vibration. If it vibrates much more than making your hands tingle after a long ride then you should take it to an expert that repairs shovels and get their opinion. That's assuming your handle bars aren't mounted solid though. Either way let someone who has a lot of experience and knows what they are doing look it over. Especially if the vibration gets really bad from say 1000 to 2000. Keep riding it vibrating bad and the lower end repair will just keep getting more expensive.
The vibration isn't really all that bad. No worse than my evo. And the bars are solid mount... no bushings.
I cruise at 70 to 75 for a whole tank of gas pull over and fill up and keep going on my 76 flh
Ive been wondering, didnt these bikes leave the factory with an unballanced crankshaft/piston combo ? Maybe some people got lucky and have a bike that can run 80 mph with little vibes, where others got unlucky and the bike feels like it shakes itself apart at 60 mph.
They're all different in their own way from what I've noticed.
Cool video!! Who’s the cute chick hanging around wit y’all!! 🥰🥰 JK. Hey Kim!!❤️
Ssshhh....Don't tell the mrs.
Pretty cool Corey.
Shovel head is awesome I'll check out guys channel I like the way he talks lol
Lol... He's a good dude
You what to run 23 _48 at least. I run 24_48 and I'm thinking about 25 -48 ,for traveling !
purdy much da same as my ironhead!
🤘😎🤘
Sonfs cool, I rode my 2011 RK, today sat on bout 58mph, I Dot ride fast , what size are those apes, do they feel comfortable, I got a few aches, age
The bars have a 12 inch rise and meant for a wide glide front.
I love my shovel
I made a mistake and took my shovel head on a 3 day ride with these guys that had new bikes , they rode 80-85 mph all the time , I tried to keep up but the vibration is just too bad , I lost my gas cap ,tag bracket and the last day my battery shorted out, never again, just ride it around town solo trips
I found that if I'm going to continue to ride these old machines, I'm pretty much going to be alone most of the time.
I am good with riding slower it’s a lot safer and I prefer to cruise along and enjoy life. It’s never about the destination it’s always about the journey.
Shovel love!
You dont have a fast shovelhead on accident, and it's hard as he'll not to ride cracked back when you do ! Cheers
Looks good 👍👍🇨🇱
Thanks!
How do you know how fast your shove will go when you didn't open it up.
A wild guess I suppose
wow , emazing👍👍👍
i had a 93 inch shovel it would cruise at 75 at 2800 roms,so even a stock 1 will do 70 easily.
Must have been geared for it. At 3000 rpm's mine does 70.
Got the stock belt drive on my 81 Sturgis, got the feeling it runs way more rpms than yours. I've not had it above 60mph, roughly 2500rpm. Mechanical compassion.... 2500 is where I shift at the latest. I stop every 100 miles to see where the oil spray comes from. I fixed the crankcase spraying all over my rear brake by taking half a quart of oil out, it brakes better now too :-) now the next spray is coming from the ham can air cleaner, I lubed the sponge oil filter way too much.
2500rpm shifts your lugging it 3500 to 4000rpm between shifts. Don't be afraid to rev it up.
@@rossfarquhar7229 I think you're way too high there. I have the feeling the sweet spot is at an indicated 1700 rpm. At 3000 rpm it feels like the motor wants to leave the rest of the bike. 55mph is at 2200rpm. Even my Honda NC750 shifts at 2000rpm.
Old school nice bke.
1980 Wide Glide first-year the 1340 sweetspot 65
Once you get running more than 60 your concentration is to much on riding....Slow down fellas take in the scenery/smells etc....Life is to short to blast through it... Time and place for Puttin and Blasting imo....This guy prefers putting!!!!
I agree with your sentiment, puttzing is for some at certain times and then for others, its throttle back and making them purr, Not everyone's style of riding, but neither is rubbernecking lol, ILove your laid back approach friend, shows alot about someone's character, like a think twice act once type of Hombrè, I appreciate that. God bless you and ride safe on the scooters!
No matter the temperature, I ride with gloves.
