  • So I'm trying something new. Follow along as a check out a new lake using my fishfinder. You will see how I use a fishfinder to find spots that hold fish and how I eliminate water. This is the first time I've tried this type of video so I would appreciate some good quality feedback on how I can make it better. Thanks for watching.

This was a different pace & format but I found it helpful. The way you were "thinking out loud" helped understand your process & I know more about using electronics than before. Yes you're a good fisherman and have been super successful but you're also a really skilled teacher (which is probably why you have over 371,000 subscribers!)

Great basic video for pond fisherman. If the next video could have more cover. Something like all grass or an area with stumps / lay downs.
Just doing one type of cover at a time. You could even make a playlist. This video being the first to go over bottom contour and locating where fish are at depth wise

This was awesome! I think it would be good to mix in some lure recommendations (depending on the features you see) as well as some fishing to show how to break down a lake and establish a pattern. Keep up the great work!

Very informative video, would definitely like to see more on utilizing electronics more efficiently.
As you touched on, perhaps for those who do not have side imaging and some of the newer features, perhaps some content with just DSI or traditional sonar would be of great use for those of us in that catagory.
I guess a more updated version of your older "How to use less expensive sonars" video. (Not sure if I got the title right).
Again, thank you for the time and effort.

Very good video Gene! As others have said I try to use some kind of a pointing device rather than your finger. Even a stick for a piece of grass if you forget to bring your pencil. And your comment about getting the biggest screen that you can afford is spot-on. I started out with a little 3 inch screen went to a helix 5 and now running a helix 7 and the next one will probably be a helix eight or nine out of my kayak. A nine is probably optimal for me out of my kayak but it's pricey.

Fantastic video and can't wait for this series to expand! Your sonar tutorials are the best out there! A sincere thank you! Maybe in the future make a video addressing one of my biggest issues. After taking my eyes off the screen, trying to position myself within casting distance, looking out over the water, trying to find and setting up on my waypoints. Basically, tips in knowing where the structure / fish is located in reference to my marked "on screen" way point. I've started using buoys to help but I shouldn't need them with the technology we have. Any tips would be helpful and appreciated. Also, I realize it depends on depth but how far do you keep your Kayak off of the underwater structure..... say at 10-12 feet. Do you sometimes fish vertically and at what depth. Please, more side scan tutorials! Thanks again Gene! 👍 👍

Hey man, I just want to say I like you. Infact, I look up to you. Ive tried so hard for a few months now trying to be good at fishing and ive took all your advice and put it to the test. In nearly 2 and a half months I've only got 1 bite using a white spinnerbait on braid with a swivel to fluorocarbon. Im going to try the fg knot and rig fluorocarbon to my braid properly.. i think im on the right track there. Im a slow learner but when I get committed I won't stop until im good at it and fishing ain't no different. As bad as I am at it and how long it has taken, because man I swear to you no joke in 2 and a half months fishing every single day for atleast 2 hours a day and only getting 1 bite is so frustrating yet I know it'll be worth it once I get it, I want to start a channel for stuff like this. Im one of those breeds of people whom arent good at much, i don't know i might be able to help others like me. Anyways when I finally catch my first bass you better believe I'll be blowing up your comments letting you know you helped me do it. This is way out there too but if you ever decided you wanted to make a video on the worst fisherman on youtube catch a fish, im 100% your guy.

Great info. How about incorporating how you arrive at the lake. Talk about the weather conditions, water clarity and then searching for the fish and where you “think” they should be. After finding them. How are you going to fish them? How do you fish the brush pile? I have a problem always getting hung up in brush piles whether i’m using a jig, worm, dropshot or crankbait etc. Doesn’t seam to make a difference. I would watch a series of videos with different conditions on different days. Thank you!

Absolutely fantastic! I've always wanted a video on electronics IN A KAYAK... there's a bunch of good How-To's from a bass boat, but at different speeds than we see from a kayak. This was really great and I do hope you continue! My question would be: The black space on the sidescan, I understood to be the depth under the boat. When the return starts its generally (looking at the scale on top) at the same "depth" as the depth indicator on the top left of your graph (15' deep on the graph, "return" after the black starts 1/2 way to the 30 mark on SS). Therefore, a brush pile at "30 feet" on SS isn't really 30 feet to the left or right... its "30 - your current depth" or in my example: 15' feet away. Am I thinking about that correctly? In essence... if we see something on SS and wonder how far away it is from the boat, take the SS "length" marker and subtract your current depth. If thats right, the SS "range" is a little misleading as we would typically over-cast the target. Hope that question makes sense. Thanks!!

Coming from an angler who has never used a fish finder or anything other than a depth finder, I like the pointer idea, also making a series specific to each quality in fish finders and how to best use them (contour and depth scanning, sonar and how to read it, down imaging, side imaging, etc all separate videos)
One of the biggest questions I had is how to read the ratios of each chart if that makes sense. Like how much of each image on the screen correlates to actual physical distance/depth etc. I would assume speed has a lot to do with it, but is it something you have to develop a feel for?

If you're inclined to do one, a "Fish Finder for Dummies" would be awesome. From a clueless dummy, here's what I'd be interested in:
-What I'm seeing in each view? (I can't tell what orientation the down or side view is showing or where you are in the screen)
-Is the "down view" a view of the spot as if you cut that section of lake in half and are looking from the side or is it a birds eye, top down view?
-Is the "side view" actually a birds eye view with the boat being in between the to window panes on the screen?
-Where are you on the down and side view screens? (as in: is your boat/sensor between the two side view screens? And in the down view, since the image is starting and coming in from the right side, is the very right side edge the part that's directly under your boat or is what is in the middle of the screen directly what's under you?)
-What are the different colors and what do they tell you?
-What are the different shades (black to bright) and what do they tell you?
-How do you tell if something is a fish as apposed to a floating branch or plant?
-How come, when you point out what is a fish, it looks so long and crescent shaped? (what you indicated was a bass looked like a cross section of an upside down shallow bowl)
    - Sometimes a tree laying on the bottom is pretty obvious, as a long straight line on the screen. But how can you tell what's a bunch of short plants and what's a bunch of scattered stone on the ground?
-How do you tell when a hump is just deeper dirt or bed rock rising up out of the dirt/silt?
-Can you tell what is firm/hard bottom and what is muck/light, loose silt?
-If you didn't know that road was a road( because you know that area was dry land at one point and looked at an old road map), how'd you tell it's a road as apposed to just a linear dip or former creek channel?
-When you saw the road, was the road surface the middle flat bit and the two higher piles either side the piled up gravel at the side of the road?
I could probably come up with a 100 more questions, but I'm just hoping you've actually read this to this point. :)
You've got a great knack for speaking and teaching so would love a tutorial for beginners from you, with plain language or at least describe what the terminology means. (You used the term "lay down"? I assume you meant a tree that's laying down on it's side?) I know it's tough to catch all the terms you use, as it's second nature. I forget this to when showing someone how to weld, so I have to really be conscious of it. XD
And if you're not interested in a dummies guide to finders, do you know of a YT video that someone else has done that's good?
Thanks so much for your time reading this and making the teaching videos you make. They are an immense help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Regards,
    Bert

Great tutorial. Can you explain side imaging? I'm trying to see in my head what the side scan is showing on the screen. A lot of the brush and stumps were 30ish feet from the kayak and beyond that was black. Why?

I needed this video, thanks. Would you search the same way regardless of time of year and temperature? In cold weather will you still look for bait fish and then fish at that depth. I ask because I don't see many bait fish in winter. Thanks again.

This was very informative. One suggestion (besides the pencil/stylus idea) would be to find a spot where you think there are fish, and then actually fish it, and show how you're fishing that spot based on what you're seeing on your fishfinder.

Just changed to Ray Marine Element and Axiom Pro 9" from Lowrance HDS 9 for both for my 2 Bonafides. Love this video. If this lake is in Ga. where are the DINOSAURS ?

When you see small bumps on the DI screen relative to the bottom going up or down a point is that bass or could that be any type of fish? I see it all the time so i stop and fish for it but never catch more than 1 fish sometimes none at all... How many fish do you normally get out of a tree? Like if you see 10 fish in a tree and you pull one bass out of it how many times do you keep throwing trying to catch another?

Excellent tutorial. One suggestion. Rather than using your finger as a pointer, use a lead pencil or stylus which you can hold to the side and point. This would obscure less of the screen. Thanks for your efforts.
