    I’m eating these habitat videos up. My grandpa hunted an old oxbow and sloughs in the timber river bottoms on the family farm. I’m now living here taking my kids to the same holes and trying to make little improvements all the time. We have some limiting factors in place like lack of a water control structure, some parts have silted in over the years, no way to pump, multiple huge flooded fields nearby from clubs, etc. But it’s a great way to spend time, trying to make little improvements as we go and keeping it as a special place for my children. With some good fall rains, it fills right back up and holds water through the year (except this year with a terrible drought.) We always shoot some ducks, just tweaking things to stay competitive!

    Thank you sir for sharing these kind of videos! My son loves to duck hunt! I’m 46 years old and never really got into ducks until now. Ive got a property that has a lot of potential and going to work hard to make it great for my 10 year old and hopefully see grand babies enjoy what I’m doing. You are helping my future by showing videos like these! Thank you so very much! And Gods blessings be on you and your family.

    Best video yet I'd say. Best hunts I've ever had were all in natural habitat. Everything from impounded saltmarsh to flooded river bottoms full of smartweed much like this video.

    I love this "different" video! I guess I'm a habitat nerd...just didn't know to call myself that. My background is in natural resources...mostly geared towards deer, turkey, quail, etc as my part of Missouri isn't as waterfowl heavy. I went from forester with a state agency to private habitat consultant to land broker (real estate). Now that I'm in real estate I have more opportunity to get on privately owned property for waterfowl. I love expanding my horizons in new habitat areas. Keep the habitat videos coming!

    Martin I loved the video. I wish more videos about this type of thing were out there. I have about 600 acres of CRP and WRP ground that we hunt not very far from you. This will be the first year ever that I’ve tried moist soil management for ducks. So far it looks phenomenal. I would love to see more of this to compare to mine.

    Great informative video, thanks for sharing!! Do y’all setup traditional wood duck nesting boxes around your property? I’ve got 4 around my 3 ponds and they tend to only use 1 of them for some reason.

    Great job Martin. Habitat is the key. We've learned here in Florida that we have to have controlled burns to burn off all the underbrush like you took out with the skid steer. If you let the underbrush get too thick when there is a wild fire it will burn too hot and kill those oaks. A light fire ever 3 or 4 years will help. Good on ya for getting the word out, God Bless.

    For thinning like your video showed to give the oaks room to grow, what kind of spacing should I have for water oak and white oak for down the road creating a flooded timber area. I'm up here in North West Louisiana so same habitat as you got on the video. Thanks

    • @JMartinduckman
      @JMartinduckman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer minimum 15ft spacing. Some plant tighter if it’s a complete reforestation effort assuming a certain amount won’t make it. Nothing wrong with planting a few at a time and design it just how you want it.

    I have 80 acres that is wetlands that I disc this year that all came up in barnyard grass so think you can’t see through. After season do I need to disc that to get it to come back again next year or burn it out just leave it alone?

    I’ve got a good bit of land, mostly swamp I’m having a hard time controlling water going in and out. I see y’all used gates. Is your water coming from a running river source near by or is it from a man made lake or something. I just don’t wanna flood the damn roads near my land because I’m not sure what to do exactly. If that makes any sense at all. I’d love to see a video on water control for your holes y’all make. Thanks brother!
