You wanna know the REAL reason why 2D flims died, guys? Six words: Bad marketing and bad released dates. Stop blaming CGI flims.
And Also it’s the audience Fault for not seeing them in theaters at the time.
I thought 2D films were killed because Alvin and the chimpmunks 2 made more money than Princess and the frog.

I feel like the final nail was “Sponge On The Run”. Even anime films are now limited run engagements.

Also, if I may come in to add one important detail to Chicken Little's production, it was one the last movies that one of Walt Disney's oldest character artists Joe Grant worked on. He passed away on May 6th 2005 and the movie being released 8 months later was dedicated to him along with Pixar's UP 5 years later.
In the original he did mention the passing of Joe Grant.

How would I fix Chicken Little
1) Make the movie less mean-sprinted
2) Make Buck more supportive to his son
3) Have less pop culture references
4) Rewrite the script
5) Better animation
I can't really think much of how would I fix Home On The Range, all I got is made it less childish.
My own idea of improving Buck is having him be similar to his son in that he’s also obsessed with the supernatural and other out-of-worldly stuff. And is one of the few that actually supports his claim that a piece of the sky fell.
Or, just make the movie (Chicken Little) so incompetently bad that it's entertaining. Maybe get everyone either drunk or stoned, from the animators to even the voice cast, make the animation bungee jump into (while also oscillating out of) the uncanny valley, and generally making everything so badly done that it's hilarious. Make its mean spirited elements petty, illogical, and counter-productive, maybe make Buck Cluck a hopeless drunkard who can't emote at all, probably near dead of alcohol poisoning (though maybe the animation would make everybody else look dead), make its pop-culture references be like "Doogal" (the Weinstein US version), where it's so random in its references and thinking that just because they said it, it would get a laugh, its script in general sounding more like they were just making things up on the spot (and maybe imply that the "writers" cannot even count higher than five, let alone do math), and its animation being mostly emotionless and static, except for unsettling blinking and slight gyrating that makes it look like the characters are in physical pain (as in, their backs are broken, or something) whenever they talk. And maybe also make the voice acting sound like either "dull surprise", or "either drunk, smoked a pound of weed, are waking up from being anesthetized, or artificially pitched up and sounds like an alien". It'd probably be the next "Springtime for Hitler", or something; being so hysterical that it seems like a very poorly done parody of the DreamWorks style. If Eisner wanted those changes so much to spite DreamWorks, might as well go out of our way to mix the worst voice acting with the worst possible animation.
You forgot to mention that Jim Carrey was considered for the voice of Bowler Hat Guy, but he was too busy with other projects at the time.
He did in the original version. Also even funnier is that the movie he chose instead was The Number 23, yes that “masterpiece”

Such a shame Jim Carrey passed on that part. The role of Bowler Hat Guy was something that was tailored made for him like how the Genie was made for Robin Williams to voice. Imagine if we lived in an alternate universe where Jim Carrey did voice Bowler Hat Guy.

I wish "Meet The Robinsons" had left more of a cultural impact than it did... The reason why that is is that Disney still needs to keep moving forward with their live-action department...

26:39 As someone who works at the parks, I have to mention that Meet the Robinsons does have enough of a cult following that Bowler Hat Guy has been a staple for Halloween and Villain-related events for the past 5 years. Literally made a throw-away appearance at a Friday the 13th Villains event and had such an upset of a demand that the parks dare not do any villain/halloween related event without him since.
"Don't you worry, Daddy... We'll be there soon." Next time, Disney's rocky period meets its end, and new "classics" are born. Get comfy, as we'll be showing the world that Disney is coming back.
In addition to directing Meet the Robinsons and voicing the Bowler Hat Guy, Stephen J. Anderson also voiced Grandpa Bud and Cousin Tallulah in the movie. He’s really one talented dude!
This part of Disney's history is definitely an interesting one to analyze. While many continue to be sour that this was the era the company decided to give up on hand-drawn (which even I myself wasn't particularly happy about), these animation fans these days seem to have forgotten the same thing that the people who made "Chicken Little" also seemed to have forgotten:
Neither CG nor hand-drawn is what makes a movie great. Your tools are only as good as what you do with them.
One thing that I think is worth mentioning about Chicken Little is that there was a deleted scene or two that showed Buck Cluck actually trying to be a part of Chicken Little's life and help him confront his reputation among the town; the scenes might not necessarily have been enough to salvage his character, but he definitely would have been less of the asshole that he became in the final product. That just goes to show that the process of making a film is one that is organic and at times dubious, and you can't always tell when you've made a mistake until you make that mistake.
Disney might not regard 'Meet the Robinsons' very highly, but I still revisit it sometimes. Because while it's definitely best to try not to dwell in the past to try and fix your future, sometimes it's good to revisit it every once in a while to get a glimpse to see how much of a struggle you found yourself in, and all the growing and learning you had to go through to get past it, so that you can remind yourself that you always have the chance to pick yourself up after you've fallen.
Fun fact: prior to Meet the Robinsons, author William Joyce worked on Pixar’s Toy Story and A Bug’s Life and had another one of his books be adapted into a TV series, Rolie Polie Olie (which aired in the 90s on Playhouse Disney)

I feel that the early 2000s was a little depressing for Disney Animation. They tried out so many experimental films that actually sounded promising but most of them got shelved. I can easily see films like My Peoples and Fraidy Cat turn out to become amazing and creative films had they been fully finished.

Meet The Robinsons is incredibly underrated
To be honest, The original concept for home on the Range (sweating bullets) actually sounds pretty cool. With the idea of a Timid cowboy having to Face the ghost of a cattle rustler, it sounds like Ghostbusters in the old west.
I’ve listened to the Song The Cattle Rustler sings, here on TH-cam. And, I’ve got to say, it’s really obnoxious at some points and at other times, not interesting at all.
The Best Part about Bolt is that the Boy and Girl Duo *DO NOT* fall in love in the end and this also applies to Some of the 2010 Disney animated movies like Wreck it Ralph, Moana, and Zootopia.
Ok, to be fair, in Bolt and Zootopia, it didn't happen because the boy and the girl are different animal species, while in Wreck-it-Ralph and Moana it didn't happen because the boy is WAY older than the girl. XD

Home on the Range was originally going to be a Western take on the Pied Piper story. Alameda Slim was loosely based on Pied Piper too.
That’s a great message from Disney, keep moving forward, and it worked for Disney when they improved their cgi technology
I did a school presentation of the process of being a animator and I said that 2d animation is a lost art form. Even though Disney no longer does 2d it's awesome to see that even CGI Disney still got it, Bolt is one of my favorite Disney movies and it was the first Disney film I've seen on the big screen.
I saw Bolt back in 2008, and it was awesome! 🤩

Great video! I can almost see why some people would call the Post-Renaissance era "the second dark age" Most of the movies have been misses than hits from this era over managerial changes, different animation competitions, CGI animation and animated comedies being a game changer, and studio interferences for the better or worse. It also probably didn't helped how those DisneyToons Studios' sequels made the public not take 2D animated movies seriously by that point. It's rather surprising how both "The Emperors New Groove" and "Lilo and Stitch" managed to luck out the most in the beginning prior to 2008 with Bolt.
And with that, one TH-cam video chronicled a rising phoenix story better than the entire X-Men film series.

Disney's second dark age. Fortunately this one was much shorter

Their first dark age lasted 4 movies. This one was still going by the late 2000's because Lilo & Stitch is their only 2D movie to not bomb financially, for a total of 5 losses and their CGI movies weren't getting the critical acclaim they were expecting.

@@Igorcastrochucre The first dark age were actually 8 movies, 1 shorter than Post Renaissance, but it occured in a span of almost 20 years, whereas the second was in 8 years.
@@RockerMicke1 The princess and the frog was a financial sucess and both audiences & critics considered it the beginning of the disney revival. What other can of worms is there.
I think this particular period was when I lost interest in Disney's current animated offerings. I'm an 'old school' kinda guy, and wanted to do hand drawn animation, myself. While CG was pretty impressive, there's something about creating animation on paper that's truly fascinating, and I didn't want to see it fade away from cinemas. CG tends to age like milk most of the time due to how it's constantly updating itself over time while traditional animation (when done well) still holds up after so many years. I'm not saying 'bring back cels', but one form of animation shouldn't be ditched in favor of another.
I loved it when Mickey hissed at Eisner for his bad decisions.
The only one from this batch that I saw in theaters was "Meet the Robinsons," including that classic Donald Duck short, and I enjoyed both of them. "Bolt" was also pretty good, though part of me still would've liked to have seen the original "American Dog" incarnation.
But with Disney's two biggest failures, they either should've been animated shorts, or included stronger story elements to work better as feature films. "Home on the Range" had some promise with the cow trio, but it would've been much better if there was even more tension between Maggie and Ms. Calloway (maybe something similar to Littlefoot and Cera's argument/fight in TLBT), and kept the villains as ghost rustlers like they originally planned.
As for "Chicken Little," the alien invasion part is a stretch, but it still could've worked. But what really needed an update is CL's dad, since his character was poorly executed. Just show him actively looking out for his son throughout the movie, rather than make him seem like a selfish coward. Also, if baseball has to be included, make sure CL uses it to fight the aliens. Also, make the story actually coherent with these elements. Also, tone down the pop culture references. ALSO, don't have Foxy Loxy brainwashed at the end!

Bolt was the first animated Disney film I ever saw in theaters and I’m still laughing at the jokes. I was only 6, and I wanted a White German Shepherd after this film.

I have my reasons to hate it, but the main one is the success that it brought! Not just to its box office, but the success of the later movies of the Disney Animated Canon!
Meet the Robinson, Bolt, The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Winnie the Pooh, Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Moana, Ralph Breaks the Internet and Frozen 2 have all been successful movies and that success was hatched from an rotten egg and Chicken Little knows it and somethings takes advantage of it! Hell, he even did a cameo in Big Hero 6!

Great video of the Part 12 of the History of Walt Disney Animated feature.
This is where Disney started to make Computer Animated Movies that weren’t made by Pixar since Dinosaur 2000 which seems pretty interesting and so live like.
Aah, yes. For Mickey Mouse, it had to get worse with the cinematic disasters that were Home on the Range (which was enjoyably bad) and Chicken Little (which was abysmally worse) before it could eventually get better for him. Both those films failed because they emulated Dreamworks for their own good back then. In reality, all Mickey had to do was keep moving forward with both the Robinson family and the speedy canine that was Bolt, which is exactly the motivation he needed to achieve greatness again, albeit a different kind of greatness. It would not be until Pixar and Disney officially merged together that the conclusion of the Experimental Era and the beginning of the Revival Era would arrive right on time.

I thought Home of the Range wasn't bad, not great but good. Better than the Black Cauldron and lightyears better than Chicken Little.
@@mevb Trust me, any Disney animated film will always be better than Chicken Little. That's just a universal fact at this point. Hell, I can even take the likes of Dinosaur and Fantasia 2000 over Chicken Little anyday. I mean, Home on the Range does have good aspects to itself when you really think about it, which certainly makes it lightyears better than Chicken Little as you said. Though out of place for Disney, Home on the Range did have its wacky characters and stylized animation going for it.
Nah! Home on the Range is as abysmal as Chicken Little. I’d cook Roseanne Barr and Jennifer Tilly cow for steak (I’d spare Dame Judi Dench cow, because, well, it’s Dame Judi Dench. I can’t really hate her character).
@@hunterolaughlin Well, here is what I can respectfully comment to your, "Nah!", two months later, Hunter: Despite Home on the Range failing in certain areas, at least there are some qualities that make it better than Chicken Little, like the Dame Judi Dench cow being the voice of reason who is surrounded by characters that should have been in a Dreamworks film instead.
Home On The Range: While I felt like Disney films such as Brother Bear, or evening Warner Bros. Quest For Camelot were better than Home On The Range, I will say that I liked the animation, and at least the third act, and one, or two of the songs.
Chicken Little: I liked some of the comedy, and a couple of the unoriginal songs, despite not thinking that it was good overall.
Meet The Robinsons: Most definitely proof that Disney was climbing back up the ladder in terms of good to great storytelling. Man, was there a lot of great heart, and very memorable characters in this film.
Bolt: Oh man, the story may not be quite as memorable as others in the library. Still, Blu, do we have some great characters, and a really fun story, and some really good animation.
Oh, and Animat, I liked how you mentioned that even if Bolt didn’t quite make Disney have a turn for the better, they were “almost there,” and you showed a couple from Princess & The Frog whole saying that.
Next up, Princess & The Frog, Tangled, Winnie The Pooh (2011), and maybe even Wreck It Ralph!

Part 12 : Aka the dark age of Disney

@@daelen.cclarkI wouldn't personally call the 80s Disney era the dark age, the black cauldron was the only one that failed financially and critically the others did really good. They just had to take don bluth seriously he was beating them. Fox and the hound, great mouse detective and Oliver and company are still considered classics just not as high as the 90s renaissance movies.

Chicken Little is Disney’s first fully computer animated feature
All hope seems lost for Disney when they end their long tradition of hand-drawn animation with a venture into the Wild West that involves Roseanne cows, hypnotic yodelling and some of the most unfunny jokes in the world with Home on the Range and to make matters worse, their first fully CGI film is a complete yolk with a horribly mean-spirited sci-fi twist on a classic fable with one of the worst father and son stories ever hatched with Chicken Little. But a new hope is born when Bob Iger swoops in to save the day with a journey to a mad-capped future that encouraged everyone to keep moving forward when we all took a chance to “Meet the Robinsons” and finally, we end the day with a roadtrip across America with a dog suffering from a case of Buzz Lightyear syndrome and like Woody before her, an unlucky cat has to give him a reality check with Bolt, even if they had to ditch Chris Sanders off the ride!

"Home on the Range" will always be one of my favorite animated guilty pleasures, despite being hated.
It's not my favourite movie, but I really enjoyed it. I was really touched by Pearl's story and worry about losing the farm. I wishe the story was about her insteed of the cows. She could have been the one catching the vilain. But I assume that Disney thgought having an old woman as an heroin would not be very marketable towards kids.
It’s fine. I love the character designs and animation.
This movie doesn’t deserve the hate it got because it’s not among their worst, Chicken Little is far worse. In fact, it’s Disney’s worst because it’s the only Disney where they’re chasing after trends from its competition, which lead to the film having nothing Disney related(Lovable characters, memorable moments, rememberable music or songs, great animation, etc.).

Right around the time Home on the Range came out on DVD, I had to stay home from elementary school for a week due to a really bad stomach flu. I had already burned through most of the movies on the DVD shelf and Home on the Range was the only thing I had to watch other than daytime TV. I now have a mental association between Home on the Range and excessive vomiting.

It was different when Chicken Little was in cinemas and watching it, wasn’t the same without the 2-D animation but still however it’s the circle of life, but I think they turned out really good.

I enjoy Home on the Range, Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, and Bolt. They’re not Disney’s best by I still find them enjoyable to watch.
You forget to mention that Miley Cyrus was Penny. Although now that 10 years has passed, Cyrus didn't do that bad of a job as Penny. Also John Travolta, the same dude from Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Look Who's Talking, Pulp Fiction, Face Off and yes Battlefield Earth, was Bolt himself. (I just hope he wasn't with Idina Menzel during Frozen's production).
This is the true Disney dark age , the era before this their was a lot of creativity however this was just a black hole.
Meet the Robinsons was originally called A Day with Wilbur Robinson (which was loosely based on the 1990 book 📖 of the same name) and it was originally to be released on December 15, 2006, but it was moved to March 30, 2007 due to Pixar bought by Disney

One more bit of trivia on Bolt: originally, the little girl was voiced by Chloe Grace Moretz. However, with less than a year before release, Disney abruptly decided to recast her with Miley Cyrus. Presumably because, for better or worse, Cyrus *was* one of their most notable in-house stars at the time, her show Hannah Montana being remarkably successful for Disney Channel and her music as both Cyrus and Hannah Montana being remarkably successful for the company's music division Hollywood Records (not to mention the success of the Best of Both Worlds documentary, being the most successful performance for a film releasing Super Bowl weekend and seeing impressive ratings during a special 3D airing on Disney Channel that July- and i remember they hyped the HELL out of that, having 3D glasses given out at Walmart and in TV Guide and People magazines.) As harsh it probably was for Moretz, it does make sense from a financial perspective; plus, her singing would probably boost soundtrack sales and potential award nods.
Luckily, Chloe Grace Moretz became the voice of the title character In Nimona 15 years later.
I think people give Chicken Little a hard time, other than dated animation, I don't really see what people hated about it (even after watching the segment). But then, I am biased because it was one of my favorite movies growing up

To be honest, I find Chicken Little the worst Disney animated film more than Home on the Range.
Say on what you say on Home on the Range, sure it maybe the weakest Disney film but at least the concept could've have some potential and some heart kinda put into it. But I felt nothing for Chicken Little. I used to like Chicken Little as a kid when I first watched it in theaters but re watching it again as an adult but yeah it hasn't aged too well. My biggest problem with Chicken Little is it has the most mean spirited animated film I have ever seen where everyone hates Chicken Little and treats him like dirt and outcast. The tone of this film doesn't feel like a Disney film and lacks of magic and the tone feels more like a DreamWorks film or Illumination animated film you know pop culture/sugar coated comedy animated film focuses toilet humor and being hip to the cool kids without focusing good storytelling and good likable characters and strong morals and lessons. Yeah, I hate sugar coated mainstream animated films. That's why I sticked to Disney, Pixar and independent animation studios.
I mean seriously people you are all being hatred against one kid? Seriously? It reminds me of that mean spirited Pokemon anime episode Double Dilemma where Ash is being treated like dirt and outcast by toxic Norman fanboys in the town who treated May and Max like a prince and princess just because they are kids of gym leader Norman. Look just because you are a fan of famous celebrity, that doesn't give you an excuse to hate others who don't like them and have different controversial opinion.
But I do agree with you on what you said on your Top 10 Ice Age Characters Worse than the Baby where you did mentioned that there are worse things in life than annoying characters. Yeah, I find mean spirited people and toxic fanboys far worse than annoying characters.

I watched Home on the Range on Disney+ last summer for the first time and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It certainly isn’t good and is definitely one of Disney’s weakest animated films, but at least it’s heart is in the right place and the characters aren’t really that annoying. I can’t really say the same for Chicken Little.

Well, with all the bad live remakes Disney is making, as well as too much 3D animation, I am starting to think that people are regretting evolving to new levels, and are now wishing for 2D animation to come back. Which I believe is the true magic of Disney.
Out of all the Disney movies they had to remake in live action, they really should’ve remade Home on the Range or Brother Bear!

Oh yes, the age of Disney's temporary 2d animation extincionizer, the end result of Eisner and Katzenberg's rivalry reaching its logical extreme, but fortunately also two other films back in the right direction before the glorious Phoenix style rise from the ashes...
For this part, we have to look at the last hand drawn animated film from Disney before 2009, their first fully CG animated film, an underrated time travel film, and a film about dog realizing who he really is, which is one of my favorites. Then in Part 13, the beginning of the Revival Age.
I absolutely love Walt Disney Animation! Beauty and The Beast is my all-time favorite Animated film!
I always thought “Home on the Range” was great, mainly because of the music by Alan Menken and its’ stylized animation.
More power to you if you like it, but I disagree.
I love Alan Menken, but this was his worst Disney soundtrack in my opinion.
And while the animation is pretty good on it's own, I don't really think it suits Disney.

I didn't see Home on the Range in theaters, so I dodged a "Sweating Bullet".
I also avoided Cars 2, Cats, Guy Ritchie's Aladdin, Jon Favraeu's The Lion King and Chicken Little.
As well as (to a lesser extent) Star Wars The Last Jedi and Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker.

Speaking of which, Shrek, Jimmy Neutron, and Ice Age will receive their comeuppance in the 2010s.
Shrek loses its touch with the disastrous performance of Shrek the Third, and I heard that Dreamwork is now in jeopardy. Not to mention that Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona's VAs: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz respectively retired from acting in disgrace.
Jimmy Neutron's studio: O Entertainment and DNA Productions were shut down after the failures of Ant Bully and Planet Sheen.
And finally, Ice age flopped with its fifth entry: Collision Course. As for its studio: BluSky Studios, they didn't go so well with other movies they made, except for the Peanuts movie. But when Disney brought Fox last year, now it belongs to the House of Mouse.
Although Blue Sky being bought by Disney with the acquisition of 20th Century Fox does give the studio a happy ending. And Eddie Murphy did make his comeback with Dolemite Is My Name and he’s set to reprise his role as Prince Akeem Joffer/Randy Watson in the upcoming sequel to Coming to America. So he’s slowly starting to come out of retirement.
I can’t believe we’re already here to the decade right before the revival era!!

I saw The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe on the big screen instead of Chicken Little and had a much better time.
Let’s be grateful Disney hasn’t adapted to Illumination/Sony’s style.
Other things you missed:
* Home on the Range actually had Big Thunder Ranch partially rethemed to it. Artifacts of this retheme were intact until they tore Big Thunder Ranch down to make Galaxy’s Edge.
* Home on the Range also had the last Sing Along Songs video released for it.
* Chicken Little debuted to Japanese audiences in Kingdom Hearts II. He also had a video game in 2006 called Ace in Action, based on the film within a film. You seem to ignore a lot of video games, like the Aladdin Genesis game and other Dave Perry games (they used WDAS to provide character animation), Battle for Procyon, etc
To be honest, when I watched it, I really enjoyed Home on the range. It is just a fun western comedy about talking cows... At least the concept of talking animals in animated movies existed way before this film's release and is not as obscure and bizarre as the concept of talking cars. I think *_HOTR_* (lol) is Disney's 4-th most underrated movie, after Hercules, Treasure Planet and Atlantis the Lost Masterpiece.
Bolt would technically be part of the current Revival era for Disney instead of the Post-Renaissance era. Bolt is where Jon Lasseter begin to take most of the creative control for this movie and other WDAS movies to follow prior to his departure. D23 magazine at least considers Bolt to be a part of the Revival era.
I agree Lasseter was the Executive Producer of bolt is part 2 parts of the revival bases one make and sucessful computer animated feature and two return to their roots
