Wow!! I think it's amazing the amount of work you guys put into making of the troll as real as possible. As of today,it doesn't get better than that. Fantastic job guys, your hard-work really contributed to the movie! :)
The most realistic head I ever saw. When I saw this movie I thought that it whas a ordinairy guy with yust some 3D makeup on his face here and there. This worked that well because the eyes are looking really real and the eyelids looked authentic too
I’m watching the movie again and wow how nostalgic it is to see a movie after 2010 having a full body suit and make over. I really miss all the animatronics and monster makeups that got replaced by CGI. I always find myself preferring to watch older movies nowadays
When I saw the Troll in the movie first time, I instantly distinguished it was animatronic. Because it looked too 'real' to be CGI. This is the closest you'll get to reality. CGI still needs more advancements to get to Anmt level.
Yes, That was definitely the astonishing Derek Mears performing as Edward. He is a brilliant actor and a wonderful human being, aside from being an amazing troll named Edward. It was our great privilege to work with him.
I love this character so much. He's a beautiful creation! Kudos to all involved!! What I love most about Edward is the interaction he allowed that you can never get with CGI. :) Thank you for sharing the making of, too!
I think that people who do special effects like this are awesome. We've come a long way from the days of Ray Harryhausen's stop shoot method but the animatronics of today allow so much creativity. Well done on a tremendous job.
wow O: I've watched this movie sooooo many times, and I always cheer for Edward, especially when he saves Gretel from the Sheriff...yet I never once stopped to think about how amazing and difficult his creation was! So cool
Hats off to you guys then, means so much these days. I remember seeing I am Legend and really liking it.......right up to seeing the silly cgi people, it killed the film in a split second, just wanted it to finish lol Well done again, fight the good fight of real over cgi.
Wow! I just thought this was cutting edge CGI, I should have known better. This is absolutely brilliant, thank you for putting in the work to make such a real character!
Wow, one of the guys on my crew sent me this vid. That has to be the most gorgeous costume ever made. Beautifully done, absolutely incredible. CGI to me has always looked un-natural to me. I don't get a chance to watch many movies but Im going to make a point to watch this one, I have to see this costume in action!
When I saw this movie, I thought the face was CGI. That's incredible. It's a shame that CGI is the default nowadays when such awesome practical effects are possible.
2:20 - 2:25 That right there shows how practical effects will never be beaten by cgi effects. My brain for a second there actually believed that a real life troll had been filmed, that's how good these effects are.
CG is an excellent tool that when used correctly. By that I mean that if it draws you further into the story instead of pulling you out of it, it is a perfectly viable story enhancer.
I have to admit that at first i thought it would be a bad movie. Yesterday i watched it with my brother, at first i had the same thought, but then we got stunned by the scenes, we didnt expected that amazing scenes, we laughed a lot, now i have to admit it is one of the movies that i have enjoyed the most this year, and here im now making a comment in the making of Edward, this gentile giant sure gave the movie a great plus, congratulation, and thank you!! for made him an Anmt and not digital.
Just wanna say thanks for uploading this - the troll totaly made the movie for me and im so glad he wasnt CGI that isnt to say u cant do CGI right in some movies - but it isnt for every movie the movie still had some cgi but doing the troll in an actual real outfit made him so much more intresting - ANNND fit the feel of the film the troll smashing heads felt so satisfying lol
Gorgeous work! When it comes to creatures nothing looks more realistic then a animatronics, or prosthetics! I'm glad that more and more young directors feel that CGI is just a tool to fill the gaps, but when interacting nothing beats the real thing!
We need to find a balance between CGI and practical effects. The audience sense and prefer practical effects. The 7th art is always evolving, in motion! I think we pass throw a dark age, and CGI in excess killed the wow effect. What we see in this video goes beyond art! Please!! Give an Oscar to everyone who made this!!! :D
You would be surprised then if I told you that in many ways CGI is cheaper then practical, which is a sad truth. The reason why JJ Abrams can afford to do so much practical stuff for the new Star Wars is because Disney have sparred no expenses on that one.
The troll was the best thing in the whole movie, loved it. Practical FX is the way to go and CGI should only be there for touch ups and to assist, a balance between the two is best but i would like to put emphasis on practical FX. A job well done guys
I think this is Better than CGI... CGI always gives something that makes you think it's fake. I notice something though, if something like this were filmed in the 80's it would look very fake, but nowadays the filming techniques and post production editing and color correcting is so advance that it looks better than CGI, because it is actually real! Great Job!
His face mimic is amazing! Practical effects are much more realistic to portray humanoid creatures. I hope we will see soon some renaissance of practical effects mixed with cgi (like in Jurassic Park) not only cgi!
I couldn't belive this was not CGI at first. However, something about the character was so convincing, that I had to stop the movie and check how this was done. If I ever get to the point of higher budget filmmaking, this will be the solution! CGI characters don't cut it!
That's a great compliment Andrew. Thank you from the entire team!

Ôi trời, quá sức tưởng tượng của tôi, bấy lâu cứ tưởng người ta dùng công nghệ phần mềm để làm nên những người khổng lồ chứ hoá ra họ làm như thế này, thật sự rất công phu. Oh my god
@ 2:02 its a god job she has he music to listen too haha that looks like it would take ages and ages to do his hair whil ei do love cgi and obviously in films of this type you need it now a days im really glad they also used practical effects like what you did in this video looks really amazing and shows that practical effects are still needed and still look great
Hi, I saw this movie 2 months back and was wondering how edward was made because it looked so real, but I am amazed it was animated. The robot it was amazing with each and every movement of eye and the tongue so coordinated its amazing. Thankyou for sharing this and all the best for your team mates. Greetings from India
One of the reasons I love this movie is because they knew where to use CGI and where animatronics (was it the right term?) and make-up. I thought those effects were almost dead by the 2010s so it's nice to see some studios still using them rather than having fake cartoons.
Thank you for your comment. This approach is actually cheaper than CG. Just take a look at the end crawl on any movie and you'll see how overwhelming the CG artist lists are compared to ours.
I wish every movie did this type of thing, if this movie can make a troll person, and Jurassic Park can build a giant animatronic T-REX ( I know a lot of it is CGI/Green screened in Jurassic Park, but for the T-REX attacking the car the kids were in when the power was off, that was an animatronic T-REX, It was actually there!)
Thanks TheNeoAnthony. Our team creates the best animatronic characters in the business. There have been several advances in animatronics since the 80s. Actually, it's a little tougher these days to get practical effects past the HD cameras which says a lot about our work. Your comment is appreciated!
Incredible... glad it is not CGI!
Wow!! I think it's amazing the amount of work you guys put into making of the troll as real as possible. As of today,it doesn't get better than that. Fantastic job guys, your hard-work really contributed to the movie! :)
Man these people are obscenely talented! Well done, and that tongue was absolutely feral
Watching this again, great movie, great artistry of Edward. Wish they made a sequel.
Hat's off to dedication of the crew mambers and artists salute to you amazing
Imagina o trabalho que da pra fazer essa obra de arte tão perfeita
The most realistic head I ever saw. When I saw this movie I thought that it whas a ordinairy guy with yust some 3D makeup on his face here and there. This worked that well because the eyes are looking really real and the eyelids looked authentic too

This is absolutely astounding! The tongue moving was crazy!
for real? i thought it was animated/CG in the film. but this... wow! who'd thought that edward was actually a model!? not a CG! clap! job well done.
The real thing. Thanks for your comment.
This is incredible. I can't believe I am just now seeing this. The character in the face is just amazing!
I am very impressed to learn that the troll was not CGI. It looked amazing.
It was said that Derek Mears was the in-suit performer of Edward the Troll while Robin Atkin Downes provided the voice of Edward the Troll.
Yes, That was definitely the astonishing Derek Mears performing as Edward. He is a brilliant actor and a wonderful human being, aside from being an amazing troll named Edward. It was our great privilege to work with him.

Hay?
I feel like this looks so much better than cgi, maybe because it has weight
Isabel Marie Thanks! I agree that in this application, practical is more effective.

*BEAUTIFUL WORK OF ART!*
So glad they went with this and not cgi.
For sure. It was challenging convincing them that this was the right choice but now they love Edward too.
Hats off to you guys then, means so much these days. I remember seeing I am Legend and really liking it.......right up to seeing the silly cgi people, it killed the film in a split second, just wanted it to finish lol
Well done again, fight the good fight of real over cgi.
Mark Reed It's never too late to do things right.
Wow! I just thought this was cutting edge CGI, I should have known better. This is absolutely brilliant, thank you for putting in the work to make such a real character!
We hear that a lot. Thanks for your comment!
I hear that a lot. Glad you liked our version!

Thanks for your comment. We believe that both disciplines have their place and can be effective when used correctly.
It is getting to be more and more obvious to more people how powerful the physical presence of an effect really is. Pixels are not atoms.
this is amazing work, i'm incredibly impressed, i thought it was all CG
THIS IS ART !
Thanks for your comment!
Me too but I had in mind that It looked more real than CG.
FFXIV ARR Ruddi That's good to know! Thanks for commenting.
FFXIV ARR Ruddi oi
tigui barbosa oie,hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
It is an actor in a creature suit with an animatronic head and hands. Four puppeteers operate all of the different remote functions.
Those who made this are masters of their craft. Wow.
Amazing people and with creative hands
The effects in the movie were amazing. It was one of the most enjoyable films with various robotics that I truly enjoyed. Your team truly shines.
2:20 - 2:25 That right there shows how practical effects will never be beaten by cgi effects. My brain for a second there actually believed that a real life troll had been filmed, that's how good these effects are.
Thank you, that is an amazing compliment and one which I hear from more and more film makers.
This is how it should be made! Not CGI all the time.
This is how it should be done all the time u fucker asswipe, NOT CGI SHIT!!!
I suggest you search up: "Why CG Sucks (Except It Doesn't)" on TH-cam
CG should be used as last resort, when practical effects cannot be used. Like in Jurassic Park, and like this movie.
CG is an excellent tool that when used correctly. By that I mean that if it draws you further into the story instead of pulling you out of it, it is a perfectly viable story enhancer.
BEST HALLOWEEN GOTHIC MOVIE EVER!!!!!
I WATCH IT EVERY YEAR AROUND HALLOWEEN 👻 TIME 🎃
He was the sweetest character.
Watched this film today. The troll was very life like! Good job!
Amazing Job! Edward looks so realistic in the movie.
Thanks for your comment!

There is a very talented actor in there. His name is Derek Mears. He also played Jason Voorhees in the reboot of Friday the 13th.
+norduk Thank you!
This is astonishing to watch, such talent!
craftswith jo Thanks for your comment!
it is a really good movie my mum has watched it so many times with my grandad he loves this movie so much.
So glad you all enjoy it! It was a lot of to work on.
Jim Henson would probably give these guys a pat on the back for this amazing work
That is very amazing work out that they did. Congrats for them to making that wonderful creature. 😂😂😊
When I saw this in the movie. I immediately thought it could be a cool and cheaper way for them to do The Hulk on the Shield TV show.
I like the way you think. Sensibly. Thank you!
Totally agree! Thanks for your comment.
You would be surprised then if I told you that in many ways CGI is cheaper then practical, which is a sad truth.
The reason why JJ Abrams can afford to do so much practical stuff for the new Star Wars is because Disney have sparred no expenses on that one.
Can you imagine being in the woods alone and seeing this coming after you
Awsome! These guys are genius! Practical effects like this are better than CGI.
Quit bitching about CGI
So cool. Beyond words. Love you Edward.
Nishant Thakur Thanks for your comment!
beautiful work and incredible facial movement
Those facial animations are outstanding
One of my favorite animatronics ever
The troll was the best thing in the whole movie, loved it. Practical FX is the way to go and CGI should only be there for touch ups and to assist, a balance between the two is best but i would like to put emphasis on practical FX. A job well done guys
Holy cow! The tongue looks so REAL!!!

Wow speachless....
2:05 and you’re telling me that’s not CGI 🤯
what a wonderful work..!! five thumbs up!
So grateful for your positive comment!
The electronic testing of the troll look very creepy xD
That looks great! I never thought animatronics could make a creature look this expressive.
Wonderful job!
My god they're wizards
I couldn't belive this was not CGI at first. However, something about the character was so convincing, that I had to stop the movie and check how this was done. If I ever get to the point of higher budget filmmaking, this will be the solution! CGI characters don't cut it!
Thanks for your comment. We're very proud of this guy! I agree with your assessment!
Smart choice!
Edward was my favorite character :3
Bet this is where all the money goes, looks so much better than standard CGI :D
I LOVE THIS KIND OF WORK, IT'S PERFECT!!!
That's a great compliment Andrew. Thank you from the entire team!
Ôi trời, quá sức tưởng tượng của tôi, bấy lâu cứ tưởng người ta dùng công nghệ phần mềm để làm nên những người khổng lồ chứ hoá ra họ làm như thế này, thật sự rất công phu. Oh my god
I laughed so hard at the tongue moving part
+Lord eRazor almost looked too sexual. Kappa
I thought it was disgusting.

looks really amazing and shows that practical effects are still needed and still look great
this is awesome, you guys doing a wonderful job, we're getting tired of those overused CGI FX in today's movie.
It doesn't get better than the real thing. Thank you for your comment.
It is an overused tool. Seeing the miracle of hand-made effects is a real treat to the senses. Thanks for your thoughts!
Thanks for commenting! We agree.
Omg wow...Unbelieable😘✌✌

😨😨😑😕😬
Well did you see it
Beautiful Animatronics! I'm all inspired to do some more Animatronics now!
3:00 The music of the victory after an hard battle. 😭👍
Spectral Motion does it again! Absolutely amazing work Mike! Long Live practical fx!
One of the reasons I love this movie is because they knew where to use CGI and where animatronics (was it the right term?) and make-up. I thought those effects were almost dead by the 2010s so it's nice to see some studios still using them rather than having fake cartoons.

Kudos to you folks.
that is so much realistic

This was amazing and scary all at once!
Great! Thanks for sharing your reaction.
I'm about to start work on a werewolf tongue. Loved the work you did on this one - lots of inspiration. Many thanks

Wouw.. I thought Edward was 3D CGI.. great effect
The meaning of art!!
Awesome work people thought he was CGI
