The goldfinch is pretty good too (but is more yearning than actual doing stuff). There isn't really a triangle between them. Colin Firth (Tommy) is just the roommate of Rupert Everett and a good friend. Rupert (Guy) again is in love with Cary Elwes (James) and he loves Guy back.
While Cary Elwes' character of James loves Guy, he is too influenced by his place in society and cannot manage anything beyond "dreams" of what might be and stands up Guy for the English system. Guy's home life is rather awful in that he's a pawn baton parents with little recognizable love being given to him. Eventually he makes a terrible choice to live for the rest of his life in another country because being in England is too, too painful. It is based on one man's true experience and is quite tragic. The British have been decades or a century being Americans in recognizing that people need to be guaranteed to right and freedom to love who they love. Until 1967, they used to place people - homosexual and bisexual men or women - in prison on hard labor for loving the wrong person. Another Country was made when these actors were very young and Rupert was evidently already having his own struggles with being gay in that very tight British world. Complete freedom occurred in 2013. The heart - that emotional and soul filled place inside of us makes no judgment on whom it loves. It simply does, whether the result brings joy or sadness. So many of my gay friends have told me of their lives and there was nothing to say except "I am sorry and I love you. Not that having a straight woman care deeply about you. Yet, there it is." I have never seen young- Colin's films before, and I must say he was definitely a very good looking young man.
