#98: PNSO 2021 Qianzhousaurus (A-Shu) Review

- The alioramini are an unusual group of longirostrine tyrannosaurs. Long-snouted and of gracile build, the group was confirmed with the discovery of Qianzhousaurus, the subject of today’s review. And it’s truly an unusual Tyrannosaur. Of a much different build, Qianzhousaurus expresses all the typical features of the group, and it’s obvious that they led a much different lifestyle from the heavy built bruisers like T Rex and Tarbosaurus.
PNSO has given us a Qianzhousaurus of decent size, plenty of detail and a nice paintjob as a nod to this obscure group, and this belongs in the collection of any Tyrannosaur fan!

This burst of productive energy coming from PNSO is incredible. I hope it continues.
As long as our credit cards can keep up with the same level of productive energy as PNSO! But it's really been a non-stop flow of amazing figures... On the one hand it's amazing to see release images almost week after week, but on the other you almost worry that they won't be able to keep up the quality and the music will stop!

EDIT: PNSO announced the dinosaurs they'll be making down the line and sure enough there is a Carcharodontosaurus and Allosaurus, among other dinosaurs like Torvosaurus..
Lol truthfully I would not wish to have that power (in PNSO context only!) . Besides the obvious candidates of Qianzhousaurus and Carnotaurus, it's really a very exciting Roulette's wheel of where they could go next, and that's the fun of it! It would have been a lot more boring if they produced a continuous stream of ankylosaurs, then ceratopsians, then theropods. I like surprises! Wait till you see what they have planned next (if you haven't already)... it's stunning!

I'm usually extremely selective of which I get and not a completist by any stretch of the imagination. Honestly, I have never experienced a run from a company where every release is a must have. PNSO seems to be on a real winning streak of confluences of detail, colour and form here!

personally i will be using this figure as an abnormally large alioramus. Also your reviews are definitely the best in the dinosaur toy collecting community. So packed full of information that is not just about the figure, but also the real life animal.
Perfectly reasonable, considering Qianzhousaurus is larger and more skeletally mature than Alioramus!😊
Great review as always, and about the snout; I think the strange shape from the skeleton is due to the extreme keratin they have added onto the figure.
Thanks Mark! It did occur to me, but I was confused because of where the nasal rugosities lie. It seems that keratinization build-up over the nose would obsure those jagged points too. But I will hold onto that idea to help me sleep better at night! 😁
I don't want to replace my Safari LTD qianzousaurus, but men this is tempting. PNSO doesn't have a single bad figure.
I might beg to differ with the Bieber the Stegosaurus 😂
The Safari one was a little disappointing in paint application, but unless you're really crazy about this genus, this one might not be a must-buy the way Wilson is a must buy! There are quite a few more PNSOs lined up, like the Carnotaurus, that migh be a more worthy buy.

Lol only because the PNSO T Rex was waayyyyy late! That should have come out a week ago.
The scales looked a bit oversized in the teaser image which broke my heart, but in the actual model it has perfectly been done along with reasonable size variation. In recent theropod castings such as the Eofauna Giganotosaurus, the scale details are greatly overlooked to maintain the smoother skin texture. PNSO has really ventured to do the detailed skin texture of reasonable dimensions in theropods along with shape and size variation without even distracting the smoother skin texture which is really a brilliant attempt. These are really scientific masterpieces. For a long time science was very much lacking in theropod figures. The latest PNSO castings have really come out from this drawback.

Thank you Kaustav! Indeed, science has become so important and I think manufacturers are paying very close attention because they realise that many of these toys are also looked at by adult collectors, not just children.
EoFauna is great and they have great science, but I feel if we really want very realistic dinosaurs, we need to accept what EoFauna does. For example, no visible scalation at 1:35 and duller, drabber colours for their large dinosaurs. This is something collectors need to understand that you can't have everything.
As you noted, PNSO has a very good compromise which I think will appeal to the greatest number of people! I love their effort to incorporate interest, visual and tactile appeal, but not going overboard to the point of unbelievability. I was also surprised by the product images of this Qianzhousaurus but in hand, the scales are smaller so it's a relief!
@@DinosDragons A point I have overlooked in T.rex, which I shall mention here. The problem is in the eye position. As per as I know T.rex had forward facing eyes, just like owls which is finely done in the saurian latest reconstruction of the creature. PNSO one has the eye position in slightly in side which is true in its cousin Daspletosaurus. This drawback is a bit odd in that otherwise masterpiece. I am hoping for a more accurate rex figure from Eofauna, because their three dinosaurs and prehistoric elephants are really iconic among the scientific masterpieces.
I am waiting for your brilliant review of the Eofauna Triceratops sp. I also admit that Eofauna does the best when it comes to scientific accuracy which I admire most.
I saw a guy on Facebook who does custom alterations to models, customs and paint jobs.
They gave this guy lips and a feathery mane which was really cool. (don't know the accuracy of the mane but it's cool :P)
They've also done a few lipped Wilsons much to the dismay of the Discord server I first discovered them in. Though the artist is able to blend the preexisting model with the add-ons seamlessly. They're called BRAVO Models. A bit tricky to search unfortunately but searching "BRAVO Models facebook" seems to work. Just don't confuse them with Bravo Models Tokyo 😉
Yes I've heard of them. I've seen some of their models, but unfortunately too expensive for me, especially after including shipping. But I guess this will be just one of those things in Life I'll have to be content with admiring from afar. We can't have everything 😁

Well I only do know of the Safari Qianzhousaurus and I personally feel compared to that, this is way over the top. Safari has great sculpting, but this time it wasn't one of the best, and it is always let down by poor paint applications that don't do justice to their sculpts. Very sad.
This qianzhousaurus is so beautiful, I'm waiting for it, hope it arrives soon. Also I'm going to buy they new tyrannosaurus, it looks so good.

Yes, agreed on that, since I don't have a decent Acrocanthosaurus! The one from Rebor was pretty good, except for the big feet that I didn't care for. I'd be interested to see what PNSO does with this species! There are certainly plenty they could choose to tackle; I'm especially hoping for a 1:35 Allosaurus!
My credit card needs a break from PNSO dinosaurs. Oh well, I am excited to see what may come next.

Thank you Richard and I'd be happy to see Australian species represented at a high level of quality too! I am fond of Iguanodontids, being close to the hadrosaur bauplan. What I'd really love though is an Australovenator, which is one of the most complete Australian species!

Yeah. I wish they produce some really great line of Museum Quality big Theropods as I wish to have a Collection of them.
Another fine review and again I learned a lot, especially since I knew very little about this species. Like you, I also am really wanting an Allosaurus from PNSO as it is easily in my top five dinosaurs. Of the current figures out there, which Allosaurus would you consider most scientifically accurate?
Michael, that's really a hard one to answer. I know when something just doesn't look right, for example, the awful 2020 CollectA Roaring Allosaurus. Off the top of my head, I think the 2020 Nanmu if you ignore the skull fenestrae. That said I haven't read an Allosaurus paper in the longest time so I'd probably revise a few before making my next purchase.
Thanks for replying! I agree that it isn’t an easy answer. I am glad that you think the Nanmu is close though. That’s the one I have as my “main” Allosaurus on display. I’ve considered a few resin models but they’re just so darn expensive and with scientific knowledge always changing, I’d hate to spend that kind of money only to find out in a year that it is no longer “accurate”.

their theropods stand up so amazing, i bet in order to get hired in that company you need to be physics expert
They are certainly very well-balanced! However I have to caution you that you _must_ use the stands, because PNSO theropods often warp with time. Some of my viewers wake up in the morning to the unpleasant sight of a dinosaur fallen off the shelf, and even worse, sometimes taking others with it.
@@DinosDragons yea i always do use them, tarbosaurus though seems to not need one due to the slightly bigger feet and the way the one leg is putting preasure in the front so i replaced the base of the stand with wilson's because wilson's broke due to me not putting it in the right place and now i use the broken one for tarbosaurus

I don't think so. Proportionately speaking alioramins like Qianzhousaurus were still more longirostrine than Nanotyrannus. The Lu paper 2014 paper actually addresses this . The snout of nanotyrannus is about 65% total skull length, while its 70% in alioramins. Three autopomorphies absent in Nanotyrannus are 1) nasal rugosities, 2) an enlarged maxillary fenestra and 3) 18 or more dentary teeth.

Most probably not. There are so many good reviews out there already and I got mine so late there's really not much value-add I can contribute. They are pretty nice though articulated figures aren't really my thing, and yet they do this with as much anatomical respect as I think it's possible to do!
Maybe for the skull shape the explanation on Wilson’s lipless appearance could be applied here as well? :)
I'm not sure how this might. Could you elaborate? If you mean the downslope, there's a suggestion that it might be because of a keratinization build up over the bone.

I think PNSO should make a smaller tyrannosaurid from north America. like a dryptosaurus, teratophoneus, or thanatotheristes.
Teratophoneus is definitely WAY overdue! I'm surprised no one has made a good-sized one too, given how good the remains are. Lythronax too!
Nanmu allosaurus are pretty accurate
That one is actually quite beautiful, and is the only Nanmu I might have considered buying because it diverges so much from the JP Allosaurus. I'm holding out for a PNSO Allosaurus though!
Hmm its snout looks a lot like that of baryonyx apart from the notch that baryonyx has on the top jaw for better fish catching , but nevertheless it looks like Qianzhousaurus might be adapted for fish eating but its just my theory , has its stomach contents ever been found to prove it?
To my knowledge, there have been no stomach contents found or associated with Qianzhousaurus. The jaw while slender doesn't seem to have any specialized adaptations for fish eating, and in the latest paper on Qianzhousaurus cranial anatomy (Foster et al 2021) they made no mention of this as well. They did postulate that it would have preyed on different food items than deep-skulled tyrannosaurids like Tarbosaurus.
If pnso won't stop with these great models I'll have to sell a kidney 😂

I've seen somewhere that this animal's size was estimated from 7 to 9 meters. Anyone knows anything about it? And if for 9 meters, what would be the aproximate scale for this piece?
Based off a 7m animal, and being about 29cm, it's about 1:24.
Based off a 9m animal, it would be about 1:31.

Are theses rubbery or hard plastic
I believe these are PVC, and while not rubbery, PNSOs have a tendency to warp with time. So for the bipeds I definitely say you _must_ use the included support stands if you want to display long term.

Honestly, Safari's is so much better for a fraction of the price. Good model though.
Except for the oversized feet, Safari's is definitely a worthy one to have. Indeed, I really have a very soft spot for Safari Ltd... I feel that many a time their excellent sculpts are let down by lacklustre or even terrible paint jobs. But if you use that money you save on a very affordable Safari, and then paid someone to touch up for you, I think that would a very good option if PNSO or other China dinosaurs are too expensive for you.
@@DinosDragons I like them sometimes. I have to disagree about Qianzhaousaurus’s feet though, they seem just as proportionately large as the PNSO one.

For sure! Water does that for you! Makes me wonder why no aquatic reptile ever got as big as the whale... or hopefully we just haven't discovered it yet!

Now that's a nose on a tyrannosaurus, also this PNSO long nose rex look like the one from (Dinosaur Train)

Pinocchio Rex makes no sense, only the nasal bone should be elongated, not the entire snout.
Both the nasal _and_ the maxilla bones were elongated. Only the premaxilla and the posterior skull dimensions are similarly proportioned to other tyrannosaurids. Taken in sum, this results in the preorbital region elongated to 70% of the entire skull length, vs 60% in other tyrannosaurids.
You may wish to consult Lü et al 2014 for more on this.
