We stayed near Prospect Park (Brooklyn) when we went, and I actually enjoyed that area more than Manhattan :) We didn't go at Christmas, though. Much too expensive for us 😅
You provided great advice. My daughter lives in NYC and I've been up there so many times during the holidays. Spot on for the casual tourist. Loved your tips on Jan and Feb in NYC.
I was in NYC on the Saturday after thanksgiving and it was packed! I grew up on Long Island and had never been in the city at this time of year and was amazed at how crowded it all was. Going into Macy's- we almost got trampled- it was impossible to look at anything on the ground floor as the crowds kept us moving. It wasn't fun. That was in 2000 and I've only been back once since then.
I went to NYC the last wk in November & it was truly magical. At the Bryant Park Christmas Market I bought a few gorgeous men’s silk scarves, from a young start up company. The Rockettes Holiday Extravaganza was spectacular. Lots of walking, window gazing. Had a tour of Brooklyn, hoping to return & visit the boroughs. Loved it.🇨🇦
... and Rob from Trip hacks DC is the best in Washington D.C. We really enjoy the tour rob and that awesome thunderstorm got us some good photos. The sunset that night was spectacular.
Great video, and thanks for introducing us to Megan! I lived in NYC for 8 years and these are tried and true tips for visiting NY in December! The only tip I’ll add is to be mindful of rush hour times if you’re a tourist in Midtown, because people are trying to get to and from work in December, too, haha! 😀
This was actually pretty good advice. My daughter lives in NYC and I've been up there during the holidays several times. There is so much to see. NY is THE BEST city in the US for Christmas. It's like Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Americans owe it to themselves to do it at least once in their lifetimes. Good job!
I live in Connecticut--about an hour's train ride from NYC, and I agree with all your tips. I've made many trips into New York at Christmas, and it's magical. I have to say that while you talked about the crowds on Fifth Avenue around Rockefeller Center and the department store windows, I think they're worse than you described. I was nearly crushed in a mob near Rockefeller Center one year while visiting with some friends from work, and it really scared me. It might be a good idea to research when peak crowd times are at those places and plan accordingly. Now I always walk down Madison Avenue and cross over to Fifth later to avoid encountering this again. Another great place to visit at Christmas is Little Italy. Mulberry Street is beautiful this time of year, and after walking around in the cold, there's nothing like a yummy bowl of pasta and a glass of wine to bring you back to life. I didn't know about the guided tours, and I will definitely try to book one the next time I visit the city. Thanks for this awesome video.
if you're trying not to overspend in nyc, this is where self control comes in! you don't have to eat in fancy restaurants. there are bodegas to get cheap eats as well as food cart vendors. you don't have to pay anything to check out the christmas shops and department stores though you'll be sorely tempted to buy something! walk! i take the train into penn station and you're basically going to stick to midtown which is all very walkable. i'm pretty sure the hot dog vendors don't take cards, but some of the other ones might so have some cash on you. if you get lost or need something, the police officers are really nice! well, as long as you're not a jerk or acting entitled. i went into the city at least once a year for years until the pandemic. never failed to have a great time. christmas markets: union square (southern manhattan), bryant park (closes to penn station), columbus circle (southwest corner of central park), and grand central station (closer to rockerfeller center).
Spent Christmas in NYC with my parents back in 2008! We did what you considered was right, though we skipped the Outer Boroughs. Anyway, we had a beautiful time! Merry Christmas from Ottawa, Canada!
Visit , the NY Museum and ask if it’s suggested donation - if it’s not you can pay what you wish - and it’s completely ok also depending when you arrive some of the Museums are free - they have free nights etc
My friends always want to travel to New York during Xmas and I'm always bah humbug, this is the first video I've seen that makes me want to go! Thanks!!!!
I'm planning a one-week trip to NY for the holidays, and just wondering, when is the best time to visit - right BEFORE, or right AFTER Christmas? I was originally planning to fly out the day after Christmas, but I'm worried that I'll be missing out on some of the festivities (i.e., Christmas markets, evening light shows, etc.). TIA for any advice! Wolters World is my most trusted source for travel advice, so keep up the great work!
Thank you for this wonderful video showing NYC at Christmas. The tour guide Megan said not to be afraid of the crowds. I'm not afraid of them I just don't like crowds. I prefer smaller less crowded towns decorated for Christmas. I used to enjoy all the hustle and bustle, I've just slowed down and enjoy the quieter things in life. But thank you again for this video I enjoyed it. ❄️🎄🎅⛄
I have a question. I am planning on coming to New York City after the 25th of December. How long will the city have their Christmas decorations up for?
Couldn’t agree more with the weather. Me and my family were freezing on the last Christmas eve (December 24, 2022) at Rockefeller Center, when the temperature suddenly drop to -14°C (feels like -24°C !). Our winter jacket and gloves suddenly useless at that moment. So, yeah, be prepared for New York’s unique weather. Nonetheless, I LOVE NYC, especially on Christmas! Unforgettable moments.
Was wondering, what was the hotel the both of you were speaking in front of in the beginning, in the corridor opening to that tree and the chandelier? It was hard to make that out and my wife and I would like to stay there.
As a New Yorker spot on but as a big no in New York is don’t be scared to ask for directions know a second language some of us New Yorkers are really friendly
(2 weekends to XMas!) The crowds on the weekend are too much for me. Subway ride away. But people can go to various neighborhoods fine for tourists on weekends too, such a E and W Village, Chelsea, Flatiron for good shopping and some modest eats. though better restaurants will be crowded or booked up.
I had recent colon surgery, never fond of crowds so I think I will take the Q32 bus down 5th Ave to see the decoration to 42St. Maybe check out my fave Bryant Park and return to Queens by same via, bus. Hope I won't get too tired
i would also say dont think manhattan is the only place you can stay to do nyc, all the boroughs have good air bnbs if you look and easy access to manhattan i really like staying on staten island and taking the ferry over, also parts of north jersey, jersey city, newark etc are options and another i might suggest, philadelphia, a little cheaper than nyc has christmas stuff plenty and a reasonable day trip distance from nyc you can take a train up and day trip manhattan from philadelphia.
I'm from Queens, NY. I didn't even know about this "Illuminate the Farm" at the Queens Farm Museum until you mentioned it. There's a similar light show outside Citifield as well. However, both these light shows are so expensive! Also, when you say "Don't forget to..." a lot, you really have a list of "Do's" disguised as "Don'ts"!
Two questions, wife and I are going in December and staying in times square, but I want to check out the food in Queens . Is it possible to go there seeing as we will only be there 5 days 4 nights ? . Thanks
@@HustleMagnets I think it's worth it to check out the food in Queens, but I'm trying to think of a place that's not just a diner and not just part of a restaurant chain. There is this Asian Indian restaurant in Jackson Heights on 73rd Street not far from the train station, but I don't remember the restaurant's name, and I don't know if it's still there. But anyway, the area around 74th Street just north of Roosevelt Avenue is full of restaurants. You may also check out the Mexican and other restaurants around Corona Plaza near 103rd Street and Roosevelt Avenue in Corona, Queens. The Plaza itself on some nights is full of outdoor food vendors. Walk down National Street and you'll find the Tulcingo Restaurant and other restaurants. There is also a Puerto Rican restaurant in Astoria, Queens, but I haven't been yet. You'll also find restaurants on and around Austin Street in Forest Hills, Queens, not far from 108th Street and 71st Avenue.
Don’t ride one of those double decker tourist trap tour buses. They are extremely expensive, and they do not have live narration or bathrooms… so you’re basically just stuck in heavy traffic in a bus.
Unfortunately people like me who are low income and don’t have the more expensive Christmas travel money to spend on airfare and accommodations, we do always have to pass on any Christmas travel 😢 I was actually there this past October for my birthday, and at that time, they were just setting up Bryant Park for the holiday season and it made me wish I could/could have been there during the holidays 😢

Out of state tourists...are not aware of the high crime here. They wear rose colored glasses. For us native New Yorkers, it is very expensive just to survive here in Gotham.
Another don't: Don't expect the Giants and Jets to bring New Yorkers happiness this Christmas! Both teams are frauds and will miss the playoffs. Go Eagles!
