  • Most people think that domestic abuse is only physical and with visible signs of injury, but perpetrators are skilled at exacting bruises that will not be visible to others.
Physical abuse can begin during pregnancy causing miscarriages, injuries to parent and unborn child. The threat of physical abuse can influence the victim to continue to appease the wishes of the perpetrator. Physical abuse can escalate from a slap to using weapons and is damaging to the body and the mind.
Women can also perpetrate physical abuse to their male partners/spouses who do not retaliate for fear of being seen as the abuser. Churches can address physical abuse in intimate relationships with congregants by being vigilant to congregants who have become withdrawn, quiet and avoid eye-contact or for changes within the person. Signposting support for physical abuse in churches sends a powerful message of zero-tolerance and facilitates access to services for both victims and perpetrators.
