Hi everyone - wow this 1000+ miles round trip to the arctic is a real challenge but we are loving the adventure and taking you along with us. Are you enjoying the adventure - we read EVERY comment so go ahead and post one below - We love to hear your thoughts 🙏. Much love from us - Chris & Marianne xx

I'm enjoying the adventure very much! Everything in the far north is expensive, because of the massive expense of transporting goods to such a remote place with such a small population. For that reason, the Canadian federal government provides a supplemental living allowance for people living up there. You guys have a lot of guts, traveling further north beyond nearly all the vanlifers who trek to Alaska. Good on ya! 👍

Cor blimey, those bugs were *APOCALYPTIC!!!* 😝😝 And the dust! Wow! Marianne is like a princess -- Princess Leia. 💪💅 Does that make Chris like Han Solo, or Chewbacca? 😆😆
With all the dust coming in around the fridge, have you/will you have the cooling fins checked & cleaned behind the vent cover outside?

    • @TREADtheglobe
      @TREADtheglobe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Oh yes! We took the vents off .... and guess what ?! It was horrific !! we have hovered and blown as much as we can out of the area .... fingers crossed it has not damaged the fridge 🙏🙄 Oh and Chris does a great Chewbacca impression ... maybe he has an inner chewy !! M xx

The houses in Inuvik are built on pilings to prevent the winter home heating from escaping into the permafrost ground below. If the permafrost thaws the houses will subside into the ground which can cause structural damage.

Food prices in the north are terrible, in Nunavut there is no road access, so things can cost up to six times as much as in the rest of the country. Most families supplement with hunting and have diets that vary in ratio, but rely on "country food". Cariboo, geese, bear, seal, narwhal and beluga, bowhead and fish. There are quotas on how much can be taken, it is an amazing diet and one that I don't think anyone else can survive on. In the Yukon, vegetable growing is very good, its a short season, but near constant daylight allows plants to do very well.

The houses are about the ground due to the permafrost. If you were to put the house on a foundation, it would warm up the permafrost and the house would sink into the ground. Thus the houses are put on stilts and well insulated such that heat from the house does not warm up the permafrost.

Great video guys. Replace your auto air filter ASAP. Dust on everything, always have plenty of trash bags and large ziplocks food bags to seal things up against the dirt. I would have the molding on all the doors and windows resealed on the van, you should probably be wearing a mask so as not breath in the dust. Have you ever heard of brown lung? During the dust bowl of the 1930's people died of brown lung from breathing dust. Stay safe.

Hi guys to stop all the dust buy some duct tape and cover the joints around the back and side doors. A strip along the bottom of the fridge will also help. When you return to Inuvik you might show the "utilidoors" that carry the house services above the ground and at road junctiond the low bridges to cross over them.

We travelled many dirt roads whilst living in the outback in Australia, your dust will be coming through your back doors, to help this use airconditioning or use your front fans bringing in fresh air to pressurise your van. Hopefully you will find it much better on your return trip. Also when the big trucks pass, hold the windscreen with your hand while it is passing, not sure if this works but we didn’t get a broken windscreen, even when we drove from Texas to Prudoe Bay, having ice road truckers passing us on the Dalton Highway and we had many rocks thrown up at us. On the way south we took the road from Carmacks to Watson’s Lake via Faro That’s a very lonely road, it’s about 400 miles, we had one vehicle pass us in two days, no where to get fuel, no shops or houses. You are definitely on your own on that road.

    Hello Arctic Conquerors
This the New title you deserve now for the Arctic Adventure.😍😍😍
Boy ! I know I myself drive 5 hours a day on dirt roads and engine, air filter and other mechanical parts under the hood gets really dusty but what I see in this video is not dirt it is simply " The Muck Makers". What an unbelievable really dusty that is. I am wondering if you could DUCK TAPE the openings as much as you can. Obviously, taking them out of there will be leaving nasty gunk's on the surface later.
" Univik" I liked the town also Chris.
    Church was very unique.
    Thanks for sharing.
However, I can do without " Horse Bugs"
I will also join one of the comments made earlier
The main reason the houses are on stilts are due to soil/ ground freezing and thawing back and forth which will make the foundation of the houses unstable and will eventually cause cracking on the floors and tilting etc.
I am going to think that building on stilts maybe during high cold winds ( air passing underneath) will make it colder.
    But, you go conquerors.
I am loving the videos. Thank you for taking us with you.
Sending love from all of us from Ft. Pierce, FL♥️♥️.Be safe.

Have done the Dempster highway three times and never had an issue with bugs. Dusty yes, but if you crank your air conditioner up full blast on recirculating mode it builds up pressure and helps keep the dust out. The scenery is some of the most spectacular in the world. I’ve seen wolves, a grizzly and in the mountains Dall sheep and caribou. You’re obviously city folk and not used to driving gravel roads, by the time you get back to Dawson city you’ll be seasoned travellers. Enjoy the trip….

Odd that the organisers of the art festival did not want filming. I used to think artists wanted to have publicity and given it was a free exhibition, it seems strange to me that the organisers felt they may lose business, which is the usual reason for preventing filming.

This is really interesting. I need to research how these people live during the winter. It's hard to imagine. Do the Rivers freeze over? Does everyone use Snowmobiles to get around or do they clear the roads? I have so many questions.

Many years back I picked up an unrecognizable biped hitchhiker in the NWT.Looked like elephant man after a night outside getting eaten by bugs.Hollywood make-up professionals couldn't ever recreate how hideous was my passenger.Kept offering to get him to the nearest hospital but he said it wasn't anything to worry about.

I still can't believe that you guys would put yourselves through all that to get to the Arctic circle..you do know you could have gone on a 2hour ferry ride from Newcastle to Norway and been in the artic circle in no time, minus the all the mosquitoes, no Fiat Mechanics, dirt dust, gravel roads..but hey each to there own I guess..enjoy

I wonder whether the people who work the ferry are employed on the basis of blood groups which the insects don't like, so they're desperate for fresh blood whenever tourists appear!

The bugs are truly horrifying, ick...... while the dust is so bad that it's affecting the air quality in your van, why don't you wear your masks?
