    Now I'm getting curious if marsupials are able to hybridize. You hear about all these placental mammals that produce hybrids, but I've never heard of any marsupial species creating hybrids.

      It seems to me that the different marsupial species are too different to hybridize even in an artificial setting. Maybe wallaby and kangaroos could?

    I'm from the great lakes region (Ontario), and yes coyotes (shortened to " 'yotes" in many places) are everywhere and are a huge nuisance. We usually refer to the hybrid version as a coydog (koi-dog), simply because there's no wolves until you're up into lake Superior area.
    They are notorious for taking people's pets, sometimes while they're being walked onleash. They'll run up out of the ditch and ambush you, and they're gone with your dog before you have time to react. I know multiple people who had that happen

    • @Gildedmuse
      @Gildedmuse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Coyotes attacking dogs that are near humans is actually rather rare, and tends to be the result of an injured coyote who is starving and desperate. Most coyotes are actually fairly skittish around humans, or at least prefer to stay out of sight. Even if you look up stories online, most of the cases tend to be of dogs that were on leashes but unwatched, or dogs who managed to break off their collars.
      Coyote attacks on humans are fairly rare in the over all scheme of things. There have been under 200 reported in the last 50 years which is pretty impressive when you consider that coyotes often live in close contact with humans. Some experts claim the recent increases in attacks over the last decade is due to this hybridization, and domestic dogs lacking the same fear of humans, but I couldn't find much to support this and it seems equally likely it's the result of us destroying their habits and forcing them to survive in more urban environments.
      For comparison, squirrels also live in highly urbanized areas and are estimated to bite about 70 people a year. Coyotes may be a nuisance but most are still highly afraid of humans and go out of their way to avoid them. They've definitely been known to domestic animals, but the idea that they'll commonly come up and grab a pet off a leash is something of a myth. He'll, most of the time they'd rather run from even a small dog unless they've had time to stalk their prey a bit and size it up. With a human nearby, these events are exceedingly rare and often the case of pets being left leashed up outside alone or owners dropping the leashes and pets chasing after the coyotes.

      @@Gildedmuse he's not talking about Coyotes. If you paid attention it's the hybrids he's referring to. Coydogs and Coywolves are not the same thing. Both are bigger than Coyotes (usually pronounced ki-oats in the region) and exhibit unique aggressive behavior. Both are issues but you definitely can tell the difference.

    • @jackalpaw
      @jackalpaw ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they're talking about the hybrid. But in my neighbourhood they aren't Skittish at all. Multiple times my dad has seen packs of them in walks with my dog.

  • @jacklandismusic
    @jacklandismusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I live in the New Jersey countryside (which sounds like a fictional place, but trust me). We have packs of coywolves all around, which are thought to have descended from packs of coywolves that migrated down from further up north. We find a lot of half-eaten deer in our backyard, and we hear them calling at night whenever they have a kill. It’s spooky.

    Coyotes are an absolute plague 😓 I grew up on a farm and the urban centres closest to us used to trap them in the city and dump them in the countryside, acting like it was the humane thing to do. Instead, over the years we lost so very many precious baby calves and many beloved pets to these ‘rescued’ coyotes.
    They’re wickedly smart, and when they choose to hunt in packs, coyotes are ruthless. They actually wait for a mama cow to lie down to give birth, then attack right when she’s delivering. She can’t defend herself or her baby, and both are subjected to a slow death being mauled and essentially eaten alive …we had to work double-time to bring in the cows as soon as they began showing signs of full-term pregnancy, and even then you have to compete with a cow’s instinct to hide herself away ahead of delivering (works on us, not on the real predators 😑), plus the fact that the coyotes are brave enough to attempt to infiltrate the delivery and nursing pens.
    I’ve watched them carry off my cat, they’ve attacked our potbellied pig, taken our geese, ducks, chickens and bunnies despite all of our exhaustive deterrent and/or pest control measures.
    I will always loathe coyotes. It’s on sight for me, permanently.

    In my childhood neighborhood in the Netherlands, there lived a lady who owned a very special 'dog': A cross between a German Shepherd and a red fox!
    The animal looked very much like a coyote or a jackal, that's why I asked the lady what it was. She explained that her father was a game warden who once found an injured fox. He brought the animal home (this was at a time there were no foxes with rabies in my country!).
    He did put the fox together with his dog in his kennel and called the local vet to treat the fox.
    When he asked the vet about putting the fox and the German shepherd together in an enclosure, he answered: 'Don't worry, foxes and dogs are genetically so different that they don't produce any hybrids'!
    After a few months the 'dog' (that she still owned) was born...
    When I said that it would be very interesting to use this 'dog' for further breeding, the lady answered: 'No, that is impossible because this dog is as sterile as a mule'.

    My brother has a wild type cat. Idk much about it except that it's a hybrid of a domestic cat and some type of wild Asian cat. It looks like a miniature Leopard. He was feeding him a high quality cat food. He was getting frustrated because it kept barfing and had diarrhea all the time. He finally took the cat to a veterinarian who specializes in exotics. She told him not to feed it cat food anymore. Those cats evidently need to eat meat and only meat or they get sick and can die. Now he only feeds his cat rabbit and chicken. The cat made a full recovery, literally in days. Gained his weight back,no more barfing and no runny poops. I lmfao when he told me how much he paid for that cat.🤣 I got my cat for free. She was living under my carport, I put out signs FOUND CAT. Nobody claimed her,so I kept her.

    Imagine being a species that only lives in water, but doesn’t breathe through the water and needs to take oxygen from outside of water.. then not being able to find an opening to do so.. so sad!!!

    Hey mate, in part 3 you can talk about the tambacu that’s a fish interbreed from tambaqui and pacu fish.
    He’s often used for fish clubs (very popular in Brazil) and for acquaculture as well.
    It’s a type of fish that is far more resistant, gets way bigger than the original species and also never breeds.
    Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷🤙

    So Eastern Coyotes have 11% Dog DNA? Since some wolf-dogs have only 5% Dog DNA and are still good pets with proper training, that makes coywolfs/coydogs tameable.
