- in 2009 i had no experience of farming or the realities that came with it. That soon changed when I met my other half Roy, I had a job as a carer and in every spare moment threw myself into farming. I had only ever driven a Nissan Micra and had experience with horses, I learnt the hard way as nobody had the time to show me and soon after arriving I found myself mothering on calves to three quarter bred limmy cows. We spent every available moment on the farm between our day jobs. Fast forward to 2016 two children later we moved into our very own farm overlooking the northern Pennines, Laitha.
we are in a transitional period at present and will finally be milking cows and making the final switch later this year, after years of planning and implementing infrastructure we will be milking 120 Jersey cows on two Lely robots. This will be a huge change and a steep learning curve

I am overjoyed to be a farmer. I feel so fortunate every day to wake up and do what I love and even better share it with the world and hope it inspires more young people from Preston to spread their wings and think outside the box the world doesn’t need more childcare workers or hairdressers it needs more farmers.

definitely right about auctions. i go to a produce auction in the states filled with Amish and Mennonites and all gloves are off when it comes to bidding on fruits and vegetables.

I have two tractor a jd 1985 and a 1990, and no hope of upgrading 😔.
Shed plans?? I assume tank room is the nearest the road. To fill feed bins you have to cross the grazing roads, also to feed one side of the shed. Why a left and right robot? You will find you will have left and right cows and if there preferred robot has an issue (they are lely's😂) they won't use the other one. On the grazing, you have no cow tracks or paddock system at present, which you will need if you want the cows to move themselves. Sorry if you feel I'm being negative but been in a few poorly designed robot sheds that don't flow for the cows
You are and I’m not sorry!! The position of the feed bin isn’t right on the plan it’s actually not that relevant to the concrete or cubicles hence it not mattering it’s on the left corner outside the shed.. we planned this with people who are experts in feed not robots, these plans are just for the builder to have in his car 😂 on that theory of left and right cows and robots if we only put one side in some would feel uncomfortable and less likely to go in wouldn’t you say? If you want to lend me a few thousand for cow tracks that would be great thanks 🙏
Hi Charlotte, I believe Wallace suggested you follow Kirstie (my daughter) as we grazes with robots. Given that you are now going to become, due to your profile, the go to example of "does grazing work with robots" I really really want it to work for you. With 4 years of experience of on what works best please come and see us and our set up before you start laying concrete 🙏 🙏easier and cheaper to make any changes on paper.
On the lend you a few grand to build the cow tracks, surely they were included in the budget along with the shed, robots, slurry store, cubicles, milk tank,etc as they are fundamental to the system working?
On the left and right cows, are you buying robot trained cows that are used to left and right robots? Can't remember from the video of when you went to buy them .

Loved seeing the shed drawings, really gets the excitement going! Over the years, at the farms I worked at, I've helped build a few sheds so I know the feeling of wanting to get on with it and see it done.
