About this video -
In this episode we went for a short trip to the historic city of Serampore in the Hooghly District in West Bengal. At first we explored the John Nagar Baptist Church.
The indigenous church movement in Bengal had begun to take shape when the East India company completely took Bengal region including part of the present day Bihar. But intially the EIC was against the missionaries operating in India So the Christian missionaries were on their own. and their purpose was to convert the natives to Christianity. In the early part of the the 19th century, the Baptists were active in constructing churches or Chapels to serve the indigenous population. After 1822, they established a Christian village in this part of Bengal called Serampore. It was meant for mission related establishments and workers.
John Nagar Baptist Church on William Carey Road (formerly the Carey Baptist Church ) located on the banks of the Ganges, Serampore was founded by Rev. Dr. William Carey (17 August 1761 - 9 June 1834), an English Christian missionary, Baptist minister, translator, social reformer and cultural anthropologist in the year 1880. AS EIC did not accommodate him on the India-bound ship, with the help of a Danish ship captain he landed in India. A dedicated missionary and an educationist he stayed in the house (parsonage) in the church with other missionaries William Ward (Pinter) and Marshman (school teacher). Serampore was a Danish colony (Frederiksnagar) , but the French and Portuguese also had trading activities here. and Carey mostly worked with the Danish Baptists. They formed mission and with great difficulty bought a house for Rs.7000, a big sum in those days. The price hike was due to commercial operations in that area. The missionaries and their families stayed in part of the house.
Then we went to visit St Olav's Church. Locally known as the Danish Church, it was one of the 100 buildings that were constructed by the Danish management between 1755 and 1845, at a time when the town was called Frederiksnagore. The founder of this church was Ole Bie.
A major restoration project there was rewarded by the 2016 UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Awards
The entrance has an open portico of twin columns under a broken-base pediment containing the royal monogram of Christian VII, king of Denmark when the church was consecrated. Above the portico is a bell tower that also contains a clock. One of the church bells is inscribed "FREDERICKS VÆRCK ANNO 1804", indicating it originated from a Danish factory.
We also explored the Serampore court which was founded in the year 1772. Though we planned to have morning breakfast at Denmark Tavern, but it was closed and we enjoyed the Serampore Ganga Ghat.

I also lived in Serampore.. many history is associated with this town.. first printing press in Bengal was also created in Serampore.. It has an unique combinations of European sculptures with Indian culture.. specially ''Mahesh Rathyatra''..

খুব ভালো লাগলো। কিন্তু একদিন একটু বেলায় গিয়ে শ্রীরামপুর রাজবাড়ী (যেখানে ভূতের ভবিষ্যৎ শুটিং হয়েছিল) দেখিও, আর ভেতো বা সুখসাগর এ লাঞ্চ করো..... গ্যারান্টী, নিরাশ হবে না.... সম্রাটের chinese খেয়ো। এসব জায়গায় এখুনো প্রচুর খাবার দেয়.... কলকাতার মতন চালাক এরা হয়নি..... আর মহেশ চন্দ্র দত্তর আবার খাবো (মিষ্টি).... খেতেই হবে।

Denmark Tavern থেকে ৫ মিনিট এগিয়ে গেলে শ্রীরামপুর মিশনারি কলেজ আর Textile Technology College । শ্রীরামপুর কলেজ হচ্ছে 2nd oldest college in India যেটা প্রতিষ্ঠা করেছিলেন William Carey, Joshua Marshman আর Ward যার main building টা অপূর্ব! Denmark Tavern এর সামনে ঘাট থেকে গঙ্গার ওপারে ব্যারাকপুর এর যেটুকু অংশ দেখতে পাচ্ছিলেন সেটা Barrackpore Cantonment, the oldest cantonment of India আর অনেক কিছু দেখার আছে ওখানে যা কিনা British দের তৈরী।

জগ্ননাথ মন্দির(মাহেশের) টা নতুন করে renovated করা হয়েছে তার সামনেই আছে ভোলার চপের দোকান। এছাড়াও হেরিটেজ ক্যাফে, মদন এর ফিশ ফ্রাই, সোনালির এগ তরকা/চানা মশলা সাথে রুটি আরও অনেক ভালো ভালো ফুড জয়েন্ট।

Kajori was right. Other side is Barrackpore. Barrackpore er ghat tar naam " Dhowbi ghat" ( locally called Dhupighat). Ghat ta Barrackpore Cantonment area te. Barrackpore Cantonment is the 1st Cantonment of India. It's just for information. Tomrao nischoi jano. 😊 Stay safe.

I am a regular viewer of your vlogs and I am from Serampore. Whatever u hve shown here I liked it a lot, but it is sad that u travelled so far and quiet early in the morning, but u did not cover all the bases from my home town. Serampore has a very old and beautiful college by the Ganges(my college 🙂) which was worth showing. Also Serampore has many ancient and beautiful temples like the Madanmohan Mandir, Radhaballabh Mandir, Shree Jagannath Mandir just to name a few. Also the magnificent edifice of the Serampore Rajbari where major portions of the super hit Anik Dutta movie ' Bhooter Bhobisyot' was shot is also worth showing. Then there is the beautiful but dilapidated Henry Martin's Pagoda, dont know whether still stands in one piece. Left my beautiful Serampore long time ago. Wished to spend my last days over there, but OMG from your video I see it has become so congested. Anyways all the vry best fr your future vlogs. Next time u come to Serampore, pls spare a day, then only u can make justice to this place twice the age of Calcutta and fully steeped in history.
