Winter camping in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park | Clarens | South Africa

- We spent a weekend doing some winter camping in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, situated in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains, near Clarens in the Eastern Free State of South Africa.
The town of Clarens is a three and a half hour drive from Johannesburg. Clarens is over 100 years old and has become a tourist trap catering for all kinds of activities and interests. The town is filled with B&Bs, clothing boutiques, leather shops, gourmet restaurants, craft breweries, and much more. For the adventurous types, there is mountain biking, zip lining, quad biking, overlanding, and golf all within easy access of the town.
We stayed at Glen Reenen Rest Camp in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, about 20 minutes outside of Clarens. The camp site is nestled between the sandstone cliffs, in the shadow of the Brandwag Buttress.
My vehicle is a Ford Ranger Wildtrak (Thunder Edition) 2.0l bi-turbo diesel, with a Front Runner Slimline II rack fitted over the load bed, and a Slimsport rack on the roof. My RTT is a Front Runner roof top tent.
