For me, this is the best song of Ed, it hits so freaking hard. When we're young, we meet people, then they become our friends, and then we think that it's going to last forever. But with the time, most of them go away, and it's not our or their fault, it just happens. Although, in the end, the memories never go away; it can be a simple habit, or a moment. liking it or not, they stay with us.
Everyone talks about how sad it is that we waste our childhood trying to grow up, but it's equally sad that we waste the rest of our lives wishing we were younger.

I'm 26 and most of my closest friends are dead. This song hits me hard and I come back to remember the time I had with them. They'd want me to keep moving and that's what I plan on doing.
Your only 26 I'm 73 and I love this song it reminds me of my happy youth and lots of sad memories also but it's good to remember all of what's happened in your life stay strong and stay safe
This song is so touching, because it actually tells about us when we were young. Careless, sloppy, rebellious, and do not know who we are. We don't know we're making a memory, we're just having fun at the time. Sometimes we regret it, but sometimes we want to repeat it. And when we look back at the hill that witnessed our mischief, everything has changed. And we can't go back there, we can only enjoy the remnants of memories.
I love the town I live in but I hate the fact that everybody knows everyone. I feel like if you fucked up once, it will be known and remembered by the whole town forever

I'm listening to this as a 16 year old about to turn 17 in 29 minutes. I decided I would listen to a few songs before turning 17 as I will never be 16 again. This is officially the last song I'll listen to at 16 and plan to come back at 17 before I turn 18. :') 💗 -Rose (Jan 28th, 2022) Edit 2023: Hello there, guys. 17 year old me turning 18 in 15 minutes here. I didn't expect this comment to get as many likes and replies as it did. Thank you all for the kind birthday messages and advice you gave to 17 year old me. I followed a ton of your advice and 17 wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. It was stressful, but it wasn't as much as a huge jump as I thought it was going to be. Time flies, but I'm enjoying my youth while I'm still young. I'm nervous to graduate this year (2023) in a few months, but I think it will all work out. I know I'm just a stranger on the internet, but I Love all of you guys and I'll try to keep the same advice I got for 17 while I'm 18. I guess that's it for now. I'll come back here and listen to this song when I am 18 a few minutes from turning 19. Thank you again. - Rose 💗 Edit: 2024 Wow. 19? Already? It feels like I was just here. 5 minutes and I'll officially be 19. First let me state the obvious: AS SOON AS I GET MY DRIVERS LICENSE YOU KNOW DAMN WELL I'M GONNA BLAST TINY DANCER AT 19 WHILE I DRIVE BY THE OLD COUNTRY LAKE BY MY HOUSE. YES, I WILL SCREAM THE LYRICS. ALSO, YES, I WILL PROBABLY CRY. Anyways, I graduated high school last summer and I'm proud of myself. :) It was difficult for me, but I got my diploma. It feels strange knowing this is my last year being a teenager, but I know I still have so many memories to make. Thank you all again so much for the advice and replies. :) Knowing that there are people willing to have so much compassion for the random internet kid that posted about her 17th birthday a couple years ago brings tears to my eyes. Thank you again. I wish all of you a Happy Birthday, no matter what day you celebrate. Remember to smell the flowers, hug your family, and smile at a stranger. God bless and You are Loved. :') -Rose 💗
Happy birthday, i remember last year when i was about to turn 20 I thought what should I do to celebrate, then I decided I should just watch a movie while moving to the next decade of my life. So I watched Nobody(2021) while turning 20. Alright movie.
Happy Birthday Love! I would tell my 16 year old self, ‘you are absolutely beautiful and perfect!’ Stay close to your true friends and never lose touch, and follow your dreams now, no matter how fantastical.’
I'm pretty sure you have some friends or family you had good times with. I thought I didn't have a lot of friends but I got 3 good ones and a lot of family. Plus I go to college with those 3 people. So if you don't have these experiences make a change if you go to college just don't do anything too stupid though. Go outside and meet some people to have good times with.
a 20 yo guy here that have been smoking, drinking, first kiss, get drunk. Listen to this, it's good if you have done that, but just for the experience, to make you know how does it feel. After that, you should go back to your life chasing your goals, studying or practicing to be whatever your goals are. The point is, be grateful, whatever happen, it happen for your best.
I am about to graduate from college . Me and my friends always play this everytime we drink. I cannot imagine how nostalgic this song is gonna be and the memories it is gonna bring back few years later when all of us will be on our own ways. Just thinking about it makes me wana tear up. Cause seriously "this people raised me"
Two years ago I crashed in accident with motorcycle in Thailand. I fallen down to the road and I hit the asphalt ground with my head. SUBSCRIBE ME I'LL SUBSCRIBE YOU BACK I may be “to young” but I still know the pain of having to leave the only home you’ve ever had. I had to go live on the other side of the world, leaving all my friends, never seeing them again, and not having contact with them ever again. I think about they every day, because all the people here suck. But, I’ve managed to get over it. And be happy where I am. But I get it, I’m still a child. And I’m fine with that.
It did not hit me until the last 1/3 when lyrics started to be perspective of his friends lives over time. Yikes that was heart wrenching. Something i've been personally running into.
This makes me very emotional. I know nobody cares, but I struggle a lot with bullying. Everybody literally hates me. I’m lucky to have my best friend with me; he’s always there for me. He’s helped me cope with my depression. We’ve done most of the things in this song. We’d mess around with the law, etc. I’m really glad to have him; and I’m Very lucky to discover Ed sheerans music. Thanks for reading; stay strong every one. Update: So my (only) friend for 6 years told me that he doesn’t want to be friends anymore... I’m not really into religious stuff but I think this is a push from god telling me that I need to come out of my shell and start making new friends. I have to admit, the moment he texted me, telling me he didn’t want to be friends anymore; I started panicking. I thought of him like a brother, I was devastated. Now after 6 years, the group I was once in split up. One moved away, one desired romance over friendship, and one left me. Like I was told, who cares about the past when you have a whole future ahead of you? I will forever Cherish those six years. Update #2: an old friend invited me to join his group at school. Life is gonna get better now :) I’ll keep you guys updated. Thanks for all the nice comments, I really appreciate it. Update #3 I always thought that I was holding him back, but really, it’s the other way around. I’m slowly starting to come out of my shell and meeting new people. I’m kind of glad that he dropped me, cause I still would’ve been friends with an asshole who causes problems. Thanks guys :) Update 8/4/2019: Everything is okay now, we all sorted it out and we have rebuilt our friendship even better, our friend who moved away will be coming back this year. Everything is going great. Freshman year sucked, but this year will be better. Thank you all for the support, without them, I think I would’ve given up on life. Thanks for everything dudes
It's rare for a music video to depict what you were picturing in your mind when you hear a song. Well done! The video captured the same nostalgic feeling that this song did. The only difference was probably the chorus, where I was imagining a car going at 90 instead of a scene at a club
This song is for my son. It tells of his growing up with his friends at the same time as Ed, 30 miles away from where Ed did. We lost him through drugs and severe mental illness. But he lived that beautiful experience, growing up in rural East anglia, doing the same crazy stuff. Ed tells a story of many young people but the endings are different.
I'm sorry for your son, unfortunately we are losing our young people to drugs! It would be good for all parents to have one faith, one path to follow and not forsake their children even for a second, just like the animals that take care of their young until adulthood! do not lose hope, one day you will see your son, trust in GOD. look for it can comfort your heart
This right here....this comment literally just broke me down. This world has turned to shit, but this comment....this is the beacon of hope I’ve been searching for.
I feel like this is not actually a song to youth but to young adults. Those just old enough to have left home a few years ago and grow up a bit. Like after a year or two at university. A song to look back on 'the good old days' and realize that while all of them have developed in different directions your friends are still your friends and are likely to stay that forever. But that might be my interpretation only because I'm just that age :D
Trekki200 this is a good interpretation. For me, I'm in my mid 30's and this makes me think of going to my hometown. I've done a lot of growing up and changing over the years, but I will never forget where I came from. This is one of the most nostalgic songs I have ever heard.
Woah, that's a good point as to why someone who's young would cry to this song even though they currently can't relate to it (or can, whichever one) which i personally didn't think about.
@@gameman3981 that's true I'm pretty young but this song reminds me of all the happy memories I've had with all of my friends and how important they are...everyone has someone or something they long to go home to.❤️❤️
Its sad that I can relate to the lyric "Made friends and lost them through the years"😢 I feel lonley this year, I don't have the courage to try and make a friend out of someone. I got friends, but I rarely see them. I'm socially awkward so I don't even try, its really disappointing😩😞💔
“Ones brother overdosed” my presumed best friend in elementary school, 6th grade(elm. Went to 6th, 7th-8th was he instead of middle) had one of his sisters die of an overdose and leave behind two children, his family was not the best, and October 2022, the only person he ever seemed to love, a close friend to be as well, died due to a drunk driver, this song reminds me of all that pain I dealt for him and how he’s influenced my life and how the friends I’ve lost, to distance and time, has affected me, everything I am to day, is to try to help others as my friend did and old elementary school friend needed
Sae :) "life is a journey, not a destination" - this song takes me back to when I was a teenager & doing all this stuff (I hate to say nearly 20 years ago 😨) - you never really start to feel 'old' - the stuff you do just changes. Some people change, some people are always there, new people come along.... always remember in everything you do, you are making memories. Nothing beats that - grab every opportunity & hunt them down. I love that what you say suggests you're a happy teenager & enjoying life - I so know many, I'm not stereotyping the whole 'moody teenage crap', but so often comments are more about wishing life away - just keep enjoying what you're doing, you'll be fine. I don't usually write comments like that, but I got really ill at 22. Just as I graduated from my Master's degree. Life changed in ways I would never have imagined, it certainly didn't go as planned, and over 10 years later I'm still battling to get my health back. Would I have chosen it? Of course not, but (cliché) it really has taught me what is important is family, friends, happiness - & health(!) - if you have those things, you are lucky. I look back on my teenage years & they were fantastic. I'm so glad I did so much when I could: travelled, partied, competed nationally in my sport, worked abroad, volunteered, geeked out at school to get good degrees - depends on what you want to do, just focus on being good at what you love & remember there is a place for everyone, the world beyond school is vast & exciting - explore it. I'm so happy I did all that and more with great friends & made great friends in the process. Some will last a lifetime, treasure them - they aren't always who you expect to be around forever. Ultimately, be happy, be kind & make the most of it all. ✌ (*The 'oldest' sounding comment I think I've ever written, but these lyrics make me nostalgic. ... so all true!)
Ed's music is excellent , but everyone should really appreciate the music video team! It perfectly complements the song and that's hard to find these days! Excellent work
A song that catch’s the hearts of everyone, reminding people that life is real and time is definitely ticking, times you will never get back I guess. A true reflection of most people’s teenage years. A true masterpiece.
I was on my 6th grade when this song was released. Back then, I really have no idea about the real meaning of the song until I reached my teenage years. I miss having fun with my old friends. How I wish that I could go back to that time. Let us not waste every moment of our lives because one day, we'll look back at it. Enjoy every moment with no regrets.
He cheated on me. I never accepted cheating on relationships. But idk what happened to me, maybe i was thinking of reconsidering him. Maybe I really wanted this to work out. I gave this relationship my all. He wanted to stay connected. Is he not supposed to be sorry now? And be more gentle and genuine with me? Talk to my parents if i need him to? To do anything for this relationship? Have a actual commitment? Instead he’s acting so rude. Treating me like trash. Called me disgusting. I can’t reach him. He is still saying he is not ready for any clear commitment now. God this is blowing my mind. How in this world can this thing happen.
Well, sadly. I don't have any childhood "human" friends. They're all just imaginary friends. Imagination was my only friend that never left my side 'til now, unlike my "human" friends at school.
Hahaha funnniest comment! I'm 25 and veeeery nostalgic about my teenage years. It feels like it's been forever! But I guess this nostalgy is a matter of personality, right? I think that writting about his experiences is great and that is what makes me relate to his songs, because they are simple and real. :)))
The song actually made me remember about the past and the good old days, but I was sad about it because I also remembered about the friends that died along the way but im only 11😢 I'm still crying bro😥😢😭😓
Shape of you has a catchy beat that made people fell in love with it right at the first moment and it's perfect when you have a bad mood. Castle on the hill has meaningful lyrics that remind us of our past, our friends and our life, really heart touching. It isn't fair when people keep comparing these 2 songs because each song is just beautiful as the way it is
I'm currently going into the final year of my teenage years and I can honestly say that I've learned so much from all my experiences. The biggest lesson I've learned is to be careful who you choose to be friends with....people can stab you in the back and turn out to be fake, true friends will always be there for you when you need them and friendships aren't one sided. Just like a relationship, both parties have to put in effort to make things work. I may not have known my best friend for long, but I know this friendship will last. Guys if you feel a friendship is slipping away try and save it. If you can't, hold on to the memories and learn from the mistakes. Hope you all have an amazing day, wherever you may be!
I don't know why Shape of You is so much more popular than this song. Castle on the Hill is raw and emotional. I guess that's just my opinion. Love this! ❤️

😔🥰
Yes your so right , wish we could go back Sometimes just to enjoy the memories once more . The time goes so quick x

I'm listening to this as a 16 year old about to turn 17 in 29 minutes. I decided I would listen to a few songs before turning 17 as I will never be 16 again. This is officially the last song I'll listen to at 16 and plan to come back at 17 before I turn 18. :') 💗 -Rose (Jan 28th, 2022)
Edit 2023: Hello there, guys.
- Rose 💗
Edit: 2024
Wow. 19? Already? It feels like I was just here. 5 minutes and I'll officially be 19.
First let me state the obvious:
AS SOON AS I GET MY DRIVERS LICENSE YOU KNOW DAMN WELL I'M GONNA BLAST TINY DANCER AT 19 WHILE I DRIVE BY THE OLD COUNTRY LAKE BY MY HOUSE. YES, I WILL SCREAM THE LYRICS. ALSO, YES, I WILL PROBABLY CRY.
Anyways,
I graduated high school last summer and I'm proud of myself. :)
It was difficult for me, but I got my diploma.
:') -Rose 💗

Cheyenne why though, you don't need to smoke and drink when your 15
I'm pretty sure you have some friends or family you had good times with.

Neojhun same, made me really sad, a song is always great if it makes you emotional
Update:
So my (only) friend for 6 years told me that he doesn’t want to be friends anymore...
Thanks guys :)
Update 8/4/2019:
Everything is okay now, we all sorted it out and we have rebuilt our friendship even better, our friend who moved away will be coming back this year. Everything is going great. Freshman year sucked, but this year will be better. Thank you all for the support, without them, I think I would’ve given up on life. Thanks for everything dudes

PaperGlazed trop drôle (very funny )!!! 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
I'm only 21 and I reminisce about things that happened 10 years ago too
Ed can sing me the grocery list and I would still love it 😍

The song actually made me remember about the past and the good old days, but I was sad about it because I also remembered about the friends that died along the way but im only 11😢 I'm still crying bro😥😢😭😓
Shape of you has a catchy beat that made people fell in love with it right at the first moment and it's perfect when you have a bad mood. Castle on the hill has meaningful lyrics that remind us of our past, our friends and our life, really heart touching. It isn't fair when people keep comparing these 2 songs because each song is just beautiful as the way it is
i love this song
Goldie Clues I'm going through my teenage years and it made me realise what I have great song
Ellie J Soo true man
Goldie Clues your so right they are both amazing songs
I don't know why Shape of You is so much more popular than this song. Castle on the Hill is raw and emotional. I guess that's just my opinion. Love this! ❤️
agreed
Zena Thompson the lyrics of this song are better but the sound of the other is really the best
Zena Thompson agreed shape of you is catch af tho had it stuck in my head for the past 3 days
Zena Thompson I love the lyrics of this more, but Shape of You has a good beat :)
Zena Thompson cause shapr of you has the groove :D love both but enjoying shape of you more cause its a song that makes you happy this one is more emotional and not always perfect time to hear sorry for bad english x.x
