Steven Wilson: “I'm very proud of the video for Permanating. As soon as I wrote this song I had it in mind that Bollywood dancing would be the perfect accompaniment, such a joyous form of dance for what is probably the most joyous pop song I have ever come up with. I hope it will put a smile on your face as it does for me.”
Permanating was directed by Andrew Morgan for Electric Light Studios.

Steven Wilson makes sad songs all his life, and nobody bats an eye. One smile, and everyone loses their minds

Could it be an indication that we often spend a lot of time treading water that, when someone shines a light, we gravitate towards it as a dose of forgetfulness of our troubles?

      @kahlenbrown2278 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

As much as the sounds like pop, it's not the same four chords that you always hear following major scale functional harmony. I don't like this song, but the only credit I can give it, is that it has a creative chord progression with chromatic movements and interesting modulation.

You can tell he'd been wanting to do something like this for a good while. As for the notion that him abruptly closing the piano's lid and ending the song is a display of rejection towards pop music, or joyous celebration, or any positive feeling derived from anything that happens in the video, I don't think it's quite like that. You can tell by the way he writes about the song and the video that he is proud and happy about everything surrounding them. It feels more as if by lifting the piano's lid and playing this song, he opens the gates and lets out a good amount of the joy inside him, and for the duration of it he can show it and revel in it. He closes the piano lid and the song ends, and everything seems to disappear; we see him as serious and taciturn as we have always. But all of this joy is not gone, it's exists inside of him, and he can let it out whenever he wishes to. He just needs to pop that lid open again...

    • @bigred9756
      @bigred9756 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Agree - if you listen to the lyrics, the song/video seems to be really about how those moments of real joy in life are fleeting , and celebrating them while they are there - after the song is over, dancers disappear, and he shuts the lid abruptly like it's time to get back to his life as usual, musically . . .

    • @pithet1953
      @pithet1953 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Well i think it's obvious and fitting to the narative: Seize the moment, enjoy little things that'll make you awesome memories because while time is but a straight arrow, we can all our lives hold on to precious memories. The end is just a reminder how abrupt it all end for us. Be good, be happy, be silly. The guy know how easy it is to just embrace cynicism and negativity. I mean look at the average shitshow often youtube comments become.

on the first concert of the final part of the tour in lisbon he mentioned how he doesn not believe in the afterlife, and as such we should appreciate and live this life at the best as we can. So I guess this is Why he stopped renegating what he wants to do, even if it means doing a short happy song with all the typycal things from 80's pop

I may be a massive Prog Rock fan that isn’t into most pop. But I got to say, this is probably one of the most intelligently created pop songs I’ve listened to. It doesn’t sound like the same song the whole way through. It switches between something more akin to modern pop, and something more like a Beatles song. Helps to keep this feeling fresh and interesting, even if it’s comparably more simple than most of Steven’s catalog
1 Year Later: Well, I’m honestly in a very different place when it comes to the music I listen to. I’ve discovered that I actually quite enjoy pop music, the stuff you hear on the top 40 radio. I still adore Prog of course, but I’ve been expanding my horizons. This song has thus become even better for me. And no joke, it’s probably one of my favorite SW tracks currently

What would be cool is if Mr. Wilson would write a good old fashioned country music song for his next album. It might piss a lot of you off, especially those of you that hate this song. But one thing is for certain, if he did write a good old fashioned country music song it would most likely be a very good one.

3:44 speaks more than the rest of the song. The artist that he is, the video shows that he has secret dreams of playing something "happy" which is unlike anything he has played in the past and at 3.44 he has a sort of awakening that he revels not in joyous celebration but in his usual silent and dark contemplation.

    Somewhere on the highway
    With a luminous moon
    Swimming after dark and then
    Awaken to you
    Hold on
    Hold onto the minute
    And sing it
    And live it
    It's always there
    Hold on
    Hold onto the minute
    And feel it
    Believe it
    And time is moving on
    And listenening to the song
    We get older
    Together
    And every time we breathe
    Another moment leaves us forever
    To the nether
    Hold on
    Hold onto the minute
    And sing it
    And live it
    It's always there
    Hold on
    Hold onto the minute
    And feel it
    Believe it
    Permanating
    Celebrating
    Now we're levitating
    High above the clouds
    Yesterday
Is the place where all your friends will always
    Permanating
    Celebrating
    Now we're levitating
    High above the clouds
    Yesterday
Is the place where all your dreams are always
    And time is moving on
    And listenening to the song
    We get older
    Together
    And every time we breathe
    Another moment leaves us forever
    To the nether
    Hold on
    Hold onto the minute
    And sing it
    And live it
    It's always there
    Hold on
    Hold onto the minute
    And feel it
    Believe it
    Permanating
    Celebrating
    Now we're levitating
    High above the clouds
    Yesterday
Is the place where all your friends will always
    Permanating
    Celebrating

It's only one song out of the many Steven has written with an energy like this and a feeling of joy throughout. It's unique, and people don't have to like it - they also don't have to call Steven a sell-out for making the music he wants to create.

I've got to admit I didn't like this song at first but like the others on the new album it really grew on me after a few listens and now I absolutely love it. It was never bad just different so it took some getting used to. Happy songs from SW are still a little weird for me but I love seeing him have some fun. I love Bollywood dancing too. Awesome job on the song and video!
Smiles look good on SW. :) I couldn't help but smile too when he flashed that cute little smile haha. When I saw Porcupine Tree live about 7 years ago he seemed so uncomfortable and didn't move around except for randomly moving his head up and down every once in awhile. When I saw his solo tour last year I was shocked by how upbeat and comfortable he seemed. It was such a drastic change. He was happy, dancing, talking and just looked like he loved what he was doing. Don't get me wrong the PT show was absolutely AMAZING and it meant a lot to me to be able to see them before they called it quits but seeing him have fun in the other show changed the whole vibe and made it a even better experience. I'm glad he's making music that makes him happy. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album! :)

I find it funny how people get annoyed when their favourite artists try something new - as if they are only allowed to produce one type of sound! Get over yourselves and embrace the fact that artists like SW keep things interesting by exploring their creativity. This will probably never be my favourite track, but it's nice to hear something different and I'm glad he wrote something inspired by his pop upbringing :)

It sounds like mid-90s summer pop, which is pleasant enough, but has absolutely nothing to do with why I listen to Steven Wilson. I listen to Steven Wilson because he is different to the mainstream, and this is just mainstream. Looks like he enjoyed doing it, but I hope he doesn't do too much more of this. There's loads of this sort of thing around if that's what you want, but Steven Wilson's talents are way beyond this.

Steven changing his sound shouldn't come as a surprise. He has never belonged to a specific genre. If you are familiar with his back catalogue you will be aware of this. I happen to be a fan of all his work, be it his early Psychedelic records such as 'Up the downstair' or more recent records like 'Insurgentes'. They are polar opposites, just like his new record will be, but they all sound good to me. Even this track. It's fun, lighten up!
I commend any artist that looks to expand their boundaries, especially when everything they touch turns to gold time and time again. That really is a sign of talent. Besides, If you're not a fan of his latest work then you can always relisten to his previous records that made you a fan in the first place. May I suggest 'Moonloop'? You might find yourself calming down ;-)

He is a musician and a creative one so you can't expect him to keep writing and playing in same field and stories as previous Albums or PT's vibes.
his music = his emotions and his mind = The lyrics and the music. this is like an oil paint and the lines merge together.
this is not "pop" obviously .. and he doesn't belong to any genre anyway.
this is as classic as ABBA and it deserves to be appreciated.
he is enjoying singing this , the beat is so good , the lyrics simple and joyful and the video is just beautiful and he is being himself. :)
