    I always wondered what'd actually happen if continent-scale shiny metal letters spelling UNIVERSAL suddenly hurtled into low Earth orbit and came to a stop.
    As depicted in the ident, Earth's cloud layer is instantly dissipated and all major cities spontaneously ignite from the tidal forces, in what looks like the beginning of an Extinction Level Event... seems plausible.

    The smooth particle simulation at the very end is actually really cool, in that it makes more sense of bodies colliding in orientations other than head-on.
    At one point I wanted to recreate the Thea impactor in Universe Sandbox to see how the moon could form from it, but the game’s simulator couldn’t do it properly. The Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (Im calling it SPH) one easily shows how two colliding bodies could stir up enough material in orbit to form such a large moon.

    Just got the trailer as an ad a couple of minutes ago. First thought this was a video game that was mostly based around action like world of tanks or whatever, but for space lovers. And then it had live action footage in-between the surprisingly mediocre-looking CG elements. A what-if documentary maybe? And then it got all weird, seemingly mixing space programs, not knowing when it was taking place. And then it had the moon more or less the same size as the Earth and everything, and I was wondering how after all the discussions we had in our lovely corner of the internet - how could someone mess these basic things up so colossally? And then I saw the name Roland Emmerich.

    I once read that each apollo landing temporarily doubled the atmosphere present on the moon. Would firing a rocket with propellant equal to one quarter the moon's mass not simply create an atmosphere on the moon? There must surely be a limit to the amount of Dv you apply to the moon before you're just pushing the air around.

    • @jerry3790
      @jerry3790 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It depends whether your propellant exits the nozzle at a speed that is greater than the moons escape velocity. Ideally, it would be much greater so as to lose the least amount of Δv to gravity.

    • @AldorEricsson
      @AldorEricsson 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jerry3790 Regardless of the way you accelerate molecules, they don't all have the same speed. Some of them will be slow enough to fall back o the Moon. If your average exhaust velocity is 40 km/s, it will only be a small amount (0.2% actually if I did my Maxwell-Boltzmann math right). But 0.2% of 10% of Moon mass is still an awful lot.

    The other issue, which you didn't mention, is that moving the Moon to any orbit approaching 1 year would cause it to leave Earth's Hill Sphere, it's volume of gravitational dominance, and the Sun would simply pull the moon away into its own orbit. At that point, pretty much anything is possible - the moon colliding with the Earth, getting flung outward towards Jupiter, falling into the Sun, etc.
