Such a fantastic example of someone who really understands Jiu Jitsu. He not only explains what he did but also minimized damage to both himself and his attacker. This is truly the essence of BJJ. He is so humble as well. We could all learn a lot from watching how this man behaved. Ossss.
@Darren Harper He specifically said BJJ, and claiming that bjj is a vanilla version that gets people beat every time is just about as moronic as it gets.
It says a lot when someone has their opponent dominated but has the humanity to not inflict unnecessary damage/pain. I imagine that martial arts generally promotes this kind of mature mindset, but you still see plenty of cowboys who take an inch of power and will try to leverage it as far as they can go (see also : idiots who don't stop when their partner taps out, LEOs escalating things due to legal immunity, backup and a gun, or people taking swings after the bell and pretending they didn't hear it, etc). It's insane how he was able to do everything he's explaining physically and mentally (factoring in his safety and the thief) in the, I imagine, seconds it took when all this went down in real time.
look dude he has already thought about this for hours and years, how certain moves wouldn't apply in the street or how they could be., so when the time comes that he has a scenario to consider, it can call upon things he has already figured out for such a scenario.
An axiom when facing any noncooperative opponent is "by time you think about it the opportunity has past". For the most part and almost regardless of the system we have to train ourselves so that we are moving before we consciously register whatever opportunity. Two of the main purposes in training for years like he has is to perfect the techniques and to reach an overall level of unconscious competence in the system. Of course most self defense situations are traumatic. Why don't you point out that the sun is yellow while you're at it captain obvious.
If you actually knew anything about ptsd you'd know that a lot of it has to do with how you view the situation in itself, and how you view the possibility of being in that situation again and how you are going to handle it.
But what do I know, I've just been dealing with it for the better part of a decade.
Well done. My kids are doing bbj. Unfortunately it’s necessary for the times we live in. All martial arts are good.
@Darren Harper how many people have you killed with your martial arts?
It says a lot when someone has their opponent dominated but has the humanity to not inflict unnecessary damage/pain. I imagine that martial arts generally promotes this kind of mature mindset, but you still see plenty of cowboys who take an inch of power and will try to leverage it as far as they can go (see also : idiots who don't stop when their partner taps out, LEOs escalating things due to legal immunity, backup and a gun, or people taking swings after the bell and pretending they didn't hear it, etc). This guy has a lot of presence of mind, so it's no wonder he seems like a solid technician.

Maybe some thoughts like "keep control of his wrist" actually came to mind before he acted but I'd be willing to bet not much if anything else did
Years of training will make it second nature. Just like any skill. Including Call of Duty or whatever.
@Randy Lahey18 agreed, maybe impressive would be a better word. There's people that train like crazy and when that moment comes, it doesn't work out.
