  • Portfolio Mark Schultz The Complete Various Drawings book preview (ISBN 9781640410732) by Flesk. This sketchbook collects all 5 volumes of the older 'various drawings' Mark Schultz books into one complete volume with an additional 160 pages extra of content, totalling a whopping 432 pages.
Mark Schultz is well known for his sketchbooks and comics such as xenozoic tales. This book consists mainly of pencil work and inked pieces of battle hardened warriors and mythological pieces, beautiful women and dinosaurs. Whilst I am new to finding Mark Schultz work, a lot of it reminds me of fantasy master artist Frank Frazetta, you can definitely see the influence. I was really impressed with this one!

    official description:
During an impressive period-2005 through 2012-Mark Schultz turned his attention to producing a body of personal works and private commissions. The results, collected in the five Various Drawings volumes, focused on subjects about which Schultz feels most passionate. Among them are characters and tableaux pulled from mythology, science-fantasy and pulp adventure, featuring steely warriors and femme fatales-his popular pulpette women included. Schultz's Xenozoic world is profusely explored through a series of dynamic compositions with his protagonists, Jack and Hannah, placed in a variety of impossibly dangerous situations. In addition to his self-generated pieces, there are many examples of Schultz's commercial works done for comics, film and books, as well as renderings of newly discovered dinosaurs and more.
Portfolio compiles the drawings found in the original five Various Drawings volumes as well as the cover illustrations and special bookplates. Plus, an additional 160 pages worth of material adds dozens of works not previously collected. Found within are nearly 450 fully rendered drawings executed in brush-and-ink, carbon or graphite pencil. In addition, Schultz shows his process with a wealth of preliminary sketches done for a range of projects, including his Storms at Sea illustrated novella. Add to this rare sketchbook material and Schultz’s increasing exploration of color-tinted imagery, and you have one fascinating and diverse portfolio!

Beautiful women, Fantasy warriors, action and Dinosaurs beautifully illustrated in pencil and ink... What's not to love!? I definitely see the Frazetta influence too, what do you guys think to this one?

I stumbled across your channel recently, and I've really enjoyed your artbook reviews. I normally stick to eastern media like anime and manga and don't read Western comics. Seeing all the cool arts styles prompted me to order a copy of Budd Roots cavewomen and Terry Dodsons Bombshell sketchbook because I saw them in your videos. I had no idea I was missing out on such awesome art.
I'm a beginner artist and hoping to use them as a reference to develop my own artistic style.
Good video man keep doing what you're doing 👌👍

Mark Schultz is my absolute favourite when it regards pencilwork. Absolutely amazing. There's a whole dimension to it that doesn't translate into ink.

Yeah his pencils are stunning! I must admit, with a lot of my art books I often say as nice as the fully rendered piece is, or even the inked piece, I often find they have lost a lot of what I liked about the sketch. Do you have any of his other books? Someone suggested the Carbon series, but I'm not sure what's actually included to know if its the same or not. Thanks for watching

@@SketchedbySte No, I have been ogling the Carbon series from afar, but I haven't bought it (yet). So I'm afraid I don't know how the exact contents compare.

New to your channel. You must be pretty young if you are not familiar with Mark Schultz. He definitely has a great similarity to Frank Cho - the way they both use pencil and brush to do beautiful curves for their women. And they both love dinosaurs as you mentioned.
Thank you for reviewing or previewing this book. I was just on a website and put this on the cart without looking at exactly what I would be getting. This might be a collection of the Carbon book series from Flesk of Mark’s art from last 2 decades? As you said, it is still worth getting when this is all collected in one volume.
    Thanks for the video!

yeah there was one image of a dinosaur in perticular in the book that looked almost identical to one of the designs Frank Cho uses - an awesome design i must admit!
I'm not sure if I am classed as young or whether Mark Scultz just always slipped under my radar a little. I think I saw some images a long time ago that didn't really stand out to me at the time, so I never looked into the books until Flesk announced this one, and then I couldn't believe I had missed the others for so long haha.
I believe this one contains the 5 'various drawings' sketchbooks, but I'm striggling to find if the other 160 images are from the other books like the Carbon series, or whether it's just personal work we haven't seen before.
Definitely an awesome book worth getting - I caved in and just ordered the hard back version too, which shows how much i like this one!
I am interested in seeing the carbon series to see how it compared / if there is any over lap.
Let me know what you think to the book when it arrives - Thanks for watching! :)

As an owner of the 2015 Mark Schultz's Portfolio: The Complete Various Drawings, the one with the orange cover I must say there are several repeated drawings in this new edition. If someone already have the previous Portfolio I'd advise buying this new one only if you're a completionist.

@@2236gaming thanks for sharing. So are both versions the complete various drawings books (5 books), but this one has an additional 120 drawings in (or maybe it's 160 I can't think) is the older edition the same?

@@SketchedbySte if it contain all five books in the Various Drawings series plus the newest artwork then it's an amazing collection.
The 2015 has the Various Drawing collection, some of the art on the Carbon books (probably from the first two books), some extra unpublished art and some pieces from the Storms at Sea novel.

@ I had been wondering about the Carbon art books, I was considering looking into getting those to see how they compare to the various drawings book. Interesting that the Portfolio books may already contain some. It's great to have a complete edition, but it can be frustrating not knowing which of the older books overlap or are exclusive ha

Yeah it's definitely worth getting! I initially thought this was a compilation of the Carbon books, but as the title suggests it's actually the various drawings book. So I am curious, what is actually in the Carbon Mark Schultz books. Is it pencil sketches that are different to these ones do you know?

That sounds like a maaaaaasive page count for an art book. Maybe that'll actually make it worth the price....Commenting on the art, I saw an awful lot of Conan the Barbarian artwork in your preview. Especially since I don't know that he's actually drawn a Conan comic...And depending on your age, you may recognize the 'Xenozoic' characters from the comic's alternative/tv-adaptation title: 'Cadillacs and Dinosaurs.'

Thanks for the info! I wasn't really familiar with any of Marks prior work to be honest, other than what I have seen on the Flesk website over the years. I heard someone else mention Cadillacs and Dinosaurs in their video though - sounds cool! This one definitely has a huge page count and the current price seems pretty incredible for it, I'm not sure if that will change in the future though. His stuff definitely reminds me of Frazetta in a lot of ways though! Thanks for watching

UK. Forbidden Planet got decent choice of Flesk publications at the moment, still it's mostly softcover editions. Hardcover artbooks (Bruce Timm from years ago, recent Art Adams, now Mark Schultz) are only available through their website with ridiculous shipping cost. Could never find Al Williamson Strange Worlds Adv. Only once I've managed to get some rare books, from Buds Palace - US based but with very reasonable shipping.

Always seem to miss out on these portfolio collections. I think I have #4, and that’s it. Looking on eBay 200-300 dollars. Hey - this video is only seven days old!?! Flesk? Search under that - dang! There it is! Paperback? Hardback, too? And the limited edition version? Damn the price, limited it is! Ordered!
You cost me a fair amount of coin with the video. But I’m a happy man!
Of course, I was thinking about getting a Frank Cho collection. Sorry, Frank, another day - I’m tired of missing out on Schultz collections.
      Oh, thumbs up and subscribed.

@ I don't have any of the older various drawing books so you are beating me there! Do you have any of the 'carbon' books by Mark?
You got the limited edition version? Wow I am very jealous! I recently ordered the hard back and that was pricey enough, but i cant wait to have it in hand!
Haha yeah sorry about that, art book addiction seems to be a real thing for me now!
Frank Cho is another incredible artist, but he has a lot of books that are cheaper and easier to get, so I think you made a good decision prioritising the Mark Schultz book whilst it's available. Which of the Frank Cho books were you looking at? I have quite a few videos showing various frank cho books if that's any help. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

And…it arrived! I had no clue that the complete various drawings had been given a second edition. I’ve enjoyed Mark’s work since the Xenozoic era, and this is one where I kept looking at the prices and saying I’d have to do without (and maybe console myself with all my Gerry De La Ree publications). So, thanks again!
