Brady, your pronunciation of "Leuven" was spot-on. "Leuven" is the Dutch name, many English-speaking people know it by the French name "Louvain". The university was for a long time bilingual, but in 1968 the French-speaking part moved out of Leuven to a newly founded town across the linguistic border, aptly named "Louvain-La-Neuve" ("New-Louvain"). (Apart from its university, Leuven is also known for having the Europe's most beautiful town hall.)
This is great. I always love the anticipation as you walk up the final steps into an observatory dome. I was fortunate to visit Mount Wilson 60", 100" and Palomar 200" this past spring. Big Bear too.
"I always love the anticipation as you walk up the final steps into an observatory dome." Agreed. These tours are fantastic. I went to Palomar when I was about 10 (45 years ago). It was a very memorable experience.
Another great video Brady. We would love for you to be in front of the camera more often. You are a tremendous public speaker. You know your subject and you are able to communicate your knowledge so well to us listeners. Seeing the face behind the voice would make these narration only videos so much warmer. Thanks so much for what you do.
The HERMES spectrometer has an "Echelle Grating" in it... I didn't know what that was either! But I looked it up on wikipedia and it's essentially a fancy diffraction grating.
In Lithuania we have a really great telescope (with 165cm mirror) which is biggest in north Europe. You should totally visit Moletai astronomical observatory
When you can't fit the whole scene in the camera, you can try shot more narrower views with the most background you can. And if you ask me, you need to interview people around... If ever you go close to eastern Europe please visit Visnjan Observatory, i think you'll be amused. Great videos man, subscribed to all your channels. Great design, sound, quantity and quality of video, knowledge...
Brady, I see that you learn so much while filming that perhaps one day you may become an authority in more than one discipline of science :) Thank you for your work, your channels and the amazing help of people who help you make it all possible.
Is the telescope named after Gerardus Mercator, of Mercator projection fame? And if so, is it only because he's a Flemish national hero, or does he have something to do with astronomy?
IIRC they had a small observatory in Leuven, in the Naamsestraat (near the Sint-Donatuspark), but it's no longer used due to the light pollution in the city.
Hi Brady! Did you record all of these La Palma videos in one go, or do you keep visiting there? If it's the latter, how are the Canary fires on La Palma and how are they affecting the observations there?
You were walking near the clouds and just talked about a tube that's slightly tilted. Next time, take a spoon with you and taste the clouds; do they taste like sweet and fluffy or are they just watery with mysterious aftertaste? Don't take too much though, it might be a dangerous trip of 100°. You could start to feel like you could bring the stars back with you when you walk down the mountain to punish all the youtube commenters. I'm kidding. Nice clip as always :) A bit fast this time though.
lmao I was thinking the same thing. i wonder what would happen if Brady dropped the camera into the primary mirror. lol wouldnt be good for Mr. brady i dont think hahahaha
Great videos!

Indeed! A really beautiful town overall. And people eat machine guns there.
I love telescope tours.

Saskia. It's a common name in Flanders, the Belgian region where Leuven is. (You could see the Dutch name "Vlaanderen" on the plaque.)
thank you - so do we!

Great vid dude!!
Great commentary throughout as well, short and sweet.

thanks Brady for these great vids!
You have a cool job Brady

You pronounced Leuven extremely well.
good job!
that's great... please help us spread the word! ;)
Charge-Coupled Device. It's an electronic device which captures an image as a matrix of pixels, which are then shifted out serially to the computer.
But Brady, does the building move?
So would this telescope be used to observe Cepheids?
Charge-coupled device. A common type of imaging sensor, used in most digital cameras and SLR, and apparently this telescope.
there's a few in the pipeline... deepskyvideos, numberphile, periodicvideos and sixtysymbols have been keeping me bust these last few weeks though!
It's charge-coupled device, not a charged one.
How does the fiber optic cord work with the telescope rotating?
5:03 Fantastic parting shot. How long did you film that for?
love it Brady! Can you do a video about the meteor shower?
How does the spectrometer work? Is it a prism just like in Newton's days, or something more advanced?
Your pronunciation of "Leuven" was/is actually very good :)
You know it's a good video when it manages to get more likes than views during it's first day.
Oh, and NO dislikes yet!
Brady didn't you say you were going to put out another numberphile video about youtube?
0:25 *drools* Epic monitor setup!
Thanks for sharing
Hi Brady! Did you record all of these La Palma videos in one go, or do you keep visiting there?
If it's the latter, how are the Canary fires on La Palma and how are they affecting the observations there?
Now you are going to have to do a video explaining what makes a space ccd different. Surely there can't be that much different.
Why no video about the Perseids?
What would they do if you dropped your camera and smashed/scratched the primary mirror?
Brady you F"#¤%ing Rock!!
brady, when can we expect more videos from your lesser known channels (bibledex, foodskey, philosophy file, my favorite scientist)?
indeed we do!
Are these all from one trip you made, Brady, or do you like... make regular trips to La Palma? All in the name of science of course.
charge-coupled device. the electronic sensor for taking the the picture.
What is a CCD?
I want to see the spectrum analyzer! :D
I wish I had Brady's job!
Viewer 177, "Liked" before the intro is over. Only way to go.
What is a Google search?
wow, thankyou.
The former. He was a famous cartographer in his time (16th century). He looked down at the earth rather than up to the sky.
wow that's my university, never knew they had a telescope though
That's my university! :D

Ccd's? Sweet
