East River Pipe is one of the best bands I got to know out of sarah records. There's not a weak record in Cornog's discography. The thing about his songs I think is this: It's not necessarily music to be listened to alone, but because they're made entirely by only one person they do feel like they are the most complete and utter expression of only one person's being (which makes it weirdly universal). Cornog has always recorded by himself and somehow during this crazy year of 2020 I found his songs to be more and more in place with where I was standing. Regardless of what the lyrics are about and how drifting or poppy the tunes sound, these are all songs soaked in solitude. It's not loneliness, it's something else. It's an exploration of one's own universe - something most of us felt somehow cornered to do in these last many months. His songs really sound like an engraving of someone - at that moment of time in which the songs happen in our ears - alone but not lonely, and not only because this someone is making a lo-fi live recording of him and his guitar (which is also not Cornog's case), but because the CRAFT is so masterful that it manages to put you right in that place; and Cornog's songs are all very crafted. He has a work in mind and functions to get that right, giving shape to the shapeless and molding, with his lone soul as a tool, the physical matters that end up building a song. I was looking for tips on buying turntables in the uk and ended up here. Any man who enjoys East River Pipe has my attention. Take care!
Very well said! Took the words right out of my mouth, but more eloquently! Prob haven't listened to this since 2020, but went on a huge East River Pipe kick tonight in the middle of 2024.
I'm a huge fan of East River Pipe. I discovered Fred's music, more than 20 years ago, after reading an article about his DIY recording technique in Tape Op magazine. Thanks for the wonderful review.
F.M. Corning is a brilliant artist that thankfully I got into early because his stuff was on Merge which was and is a great label. My brother took a chance on the Poor Fricky album and I immediately took to it and got all of his subsequent albums after that. I encourage everyone to check out his stuff. My favorite album by East River Pipe is Mel.
I like it , I prefer 'Dogman' and 'Make a deal with the city' better but yeah it's good. If you like that you might like the more mellow Dios Malos. They came to mind while listening, Good shout.

Great songwriting, that ERP. I think his mystery adds to the attraction. "What does TS Eliot know about you" is a standout track.
