  • This is the perfect rifle caliber for kids. We've been using this gun for 20 years, and the kids have been shooting it for over 12 years. It has always done the job (even on elk), and the girls have developed excellent shooting habits from it.

I'm 59 and after years of shooting 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag and 338 Win Mag my body doesn't handle recoil like it used to so now my main hunting rifle is a Savage VSX HUNTER XP in 243 Winchester. With proper shot placement and good solid copper or bonded bullets it is a caliber that punches well above its weight and within reasonable ranges is capable of taking pretty much any game animal with the exception of dangerous game species. Its low recoil just happens to make it the perfect rifle for kids or recoil sensitive shooters. Your girls have shown just how effective a cartridge it is in the hands of competent hunters.

As a follower from UK I love watching you teach your 5 girls how to be self sufficient whilst still respecting nature the skills they are learning and have learnt are many that we don't get to experience here in UK. If I was a lot younger and didn't have the health issues I have I would have loved to have moved to Canada and lived off the land and been self sufficient.

Yes, the .243 is the perfect kid caliber. My first buck at 12 yrs old was with my Grandpa’s .243 which is a Browning lever action that I inherited . The next year I moved up to a 270 Remington 700. Still have both guns 39 years later.

Wow, those girls mean business. They even shot a deer that was just standing looking at them up close. I was fishing a while back, and a mallard came up close to me. I was going to shoot it, but it was like hanging out with. Probably just hoping for food, but still, I just couldn’t do it. Probably just because I was feeling lonely and sentimental. I’m sure if I was sustenance hunting it wouldn’t have been a question, but it isn’t always easy to take an animal. Lots of emotions. Ducks flying by at a distance are easy, but when it’s up close, I find it much harder.
I remember almost every one of those videos btw.

Greetings from the land of Blaze King, thanks for the hunting memories. There are few things that I appreciate more than seeing a family out gathering winter's meat. As far as what works for anyone, as someone who has been hunting for more than half a century now it seems to me bullet construction and shot placement matter more than the brass cartridge case that gets them there. I'd rather hunt with a .223 and bullets that I trust than a .338 Win with bullets I know don't always work. Good luck to you all this season.

I agree. I bought a Savage 110 in .243 as my kids' first "real" gun. A bit late to the game (not much hunting overseas) but making up for it now. My oldest is going on his first deer hunt this fall with it. He's been practicing all summer (Good Golly, that was expensive!) and he's become a pretty good shot. My middle kid's turn next year, and the youngest the year after.

I started hunting with an old single shot ruger in 257 Roberts. I now hunt almost exclusively with either my Henry break barrel in .243, or my trusty TC hawken muzzle loader. Bullet selection and shot placement are crucial, but I have never needed a follow up shot on any animal I have taken (I don’t hunt outside 200yds, if it’s further then that, I get closer). You just have to be patient when hunting.

He is now 6’3” freshman in high school is in band jazz band in prep And is a major foot ball player he wants to be an attorney which he is #1 debater in state . So I know we talked about them meeting maybe this next summer I could drive him up ! Well I’d love too meet you all ! My son isn’t looking for a normal girl he wants to date someone who shares his life style . Which is like your ladies ! He’d love too text and share his life . I’m a proud father and proud that I asked him why isn’t he gathering up all these girls and trotting off the mall , but he said dad did you not arrange a date with the Canada girls ? I remember when I was five and you said I could do no better … Thier mom is gorgeous and cooks and hunts ! lol ! He is a long haired 60s acting child ! He wants to be an attorney too help people ! We’re going up early next summer to build the cabin that will be the start of his life we had the sewage system installed this fall . So his cabin will have running water the roads been cut in and I have a logger hired to get the 30x30 loft cabin ready to be built over the summer.

I’m 57 years old and I live in Arkansas. My two cents worth on a kids caliber has changed over the years. I like a 243 and a 7mm-08 but my grandson is 7 and small for his age so when he was 5 I started him with a 300 blackout suppressed. We have deer and hogs and a long shot where I hunt is about 120 yards. The recoil less than a 243 and does excellent on deer and hogs. Thanks for the great videos and have a blessed day
