My absolute favourite book-to-movie adaptation is The Perks of Being a Wallflower. In fact, it's the only movie adaptation that I would say I enjoyed more than the book. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that Stephen Chbosky (the book's author) was the movie's screenwriter and director. With the film, he found a new, even more touching way to tell his story.

You may have loved a lot of other movie adaptations more than the books. I was surprised to learn that Forrest Gump, Jurassic Park, Goodfellas were all adaptations!

hey i'd recommend looking into what east asian people have said about eleanor & park! it really opened my eyes to how racist and dehumanising it is concerning the way the author describes/portrays park

(I also loved Eleanor & park in high school and just recently found out how uncomfortably racist it was, I would really recommend looking into that cause it was actually real bad, park is a last name, his only struggle is hating his Korean identity and never resolves it, the book constantly fetishizes the “exoticism” of park and his mom without giving them any real depth, and tries to equate eleanors being an outcast cause of her hair and clothes with...racism. But again I didn’t realize it when I read it so like no hate just letting you know ❤️❤️)

I totally relate to your point about almost feeling obliged to watching the tv/ movie adaption of a book you read when you were younger. When I saw Looking For Alaska had been made into a tv series, it instantly brought me back to my YA phase and being obsessed with John Green books. I thought the tv series did a good job of bring to life the emotions, characters and the charm of the book .
Ps. Loved the little fact of Ireland opening its first cinema in 1909. I’m from Ireland and I didn’t know that!!

There are sooo many book to movie adaptations that I love, It's Kind of a Funny Story, The Lovely Bones, Before I Fall, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, the Twilight series... For some of these books, I look at them through a different lens now because I just overlooked some slightly problematic situations/messages, when I read the books when I was younger. But, I always love it when a book I've read turns into a movie. I don't know why, but it feels like you're in on a little secret or something lol

I think to say "the book is always better than the movie" is just unfair. They're two completely different mediums with different advantages and disadvantages. A book's advantage is that they get to flesh things out, since they're much longer than the movies, but a disadvantage is a limit to which words can really tell the story, lacking interesting visuals to help enhance the story. So it's ridiculous to say one is better than the others. It's like saying "steak is better than chocolate." The two shouldn't be compared.

I grew up reading them, drawing the characters, and then rereading them over, and over, and over again, until I remembered the stories by heart.
Then, in 2019, I heard about the movie adaptation, and when that happens it feels like they’re making the adaptation for you, but... it was NOT for me. Lol

I think The Lord of the Rings movies were actually better than the books. In the books there was just so much redundant stuff and random diversions that didn't add at all to the story. Tolkien tried to build a mythical universe first, write a story second. For the general audience, adapting it into a movie that focused solely on the characters and narrative while making relevant tweaks was ultimately a good thing I think. And of course, it turned out amazing!

aaaa im fascinated by the topic of adaptation ✨💞 in my film classes we talked a lot about how movies at first were treated like "a lesser art", since it didnt have a language or a technique of its own yet, and usually those first movies were adaptations of books, theater plays or other sorts of performances like dances. later, movies tried to become "a respectable art" by adapting "respectable books", usually meaning popular stories. and then movies became more experimental and tried new things that only were possible with a camera, with editing and other movie techniques...
in high school i had "half of a yellow sun" to read, also by chimamanda ngozi adichie. it was an amazing read, and i really recommend it: but it was so raw, so gruesome in parts and so realistic, touching the darker aspects of war, that i really dont want to watch the adaptation -i feel like it was so emotionally taxing i cant go through that again in movie format.
i do think that the best adaptations play with the differences between book and movie. i actually made a whole video talking about the differences between movie, netflix series and book of "a series of unfortunate events"; the books played a lot with its literary format, so the adaptation had a lot of things to change and, well, adapt.

Many of the Stephen King adaptations have been good. The Silence of the Lambs was another great book to movie adaptation. I didn't care much for The Watchmen movie adaptation, but I like the HBO series, Watchmen. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was also a great book to movie adaptation. I really like the novels, 1984 and Fahrenheit 451, but I was not impressed with the movie adaptations.

I think you have to be very open minded if you watch a movie adaptation to your favourite book because the director can't exactly portrait what you pictured in your head. And a lot of people seem to have a problem with that. I generally like adaptations and sometimes chose to read the books after I watched the adaptation to get more insight in the world.
But some book are just not possible to put on screen due to high fantasy or lots of inner monologue. It's hard enough to explain the world in just pictures and a script but inner monologue is another level..

as film bro as it might sound: i think "fight club" (1999) is a great example of a film adaptation being "better" than the original book (in my opinion obv, and like you said, it's very hard to compare the same story told by two different types of media.)
one of my all-time favourite film adaptations though, and films in general tbh, is "the panic in needle park" (1971). it was al pacino's first leading role on the silver screen (he was primarily a stage actor before that) and is not very well known, but i'd recommend it to absolutely everyone. it's wonderful.

9:18 the exception of this rule (to me at least) is Life Of Pi, the movie was more enjoyable than the book, I am not so sure why (probably because the movie gave better resolution than the novel? I mean as far as I remember it the novel resolved the premise in definite terms too, but the movie (seemed to have) showed it even better. Also the CG didn't hurt for me at the very least 😅😂🙈🐅)

I think a huge part about how well a book to movie adaption is good is if the director and producers and whoever to respect the authors content more. Many directors tend to leave the author completely out of the filmmaking process and editing, which means the director can essentially alter the viewing of the authors original story with a full movie but with marketing and such. That’s what happened to Forrest Gump, as it was somewhat based of the authors real life, the movie got changed so much to the degree where the author said he never wants his sequel of Forrest Gump to be made into a movie. The director has to change some things in a story to fit the medium from reading to watching a story, but sometimes they go too far and then change too much of the original content or the story line alongside their changes, doesn’t quite work. Good one is Harry Potter as (said transphobe) was on set for some of the movies, especially the first movie to convey the story in the best way and the director was okay with it, and the franchise has a strong book and movie fan base. I truly think it’s about mixing the authors art and directors ideas while respecting the authors original content that the production bought the rights to

Fun fact! The writing staff of Americanah was doing preliminary work in my office building at the time, and the only reason I knew was because my show's old writer's room used to be in that office. I scoured for the very little info that was on the internet at the time and found a connection to the writer's assistant, cold emailed her and told her I LOVED the book and I would love to work on the show in a post-production capacity (I'm a composer but was then working as a PA). She wrote me back and said while they hadn't yet been greenlit, they would refer back to me once they were looking for post staff! Unfortunately that never happened (which is all good, and now I'm a fulltime composer), but it's GREAT to know Americanah is becoming a miniseries because I AM READY to watch it and cry.

I love that more books are being turned into tv series. I think the Spellslinger book series should be adapted into an animated tv series. It would be so good. Also more people should read the spellslinger series

i never really considered how the languages of both are so different! I think the Vanishing Half would work better as a series than a book so I'm excited to see how that turns out
