Am from Cyprus and i still remember the panic we had in every game we watched hoping that Greece will won. It was like this legends were playing with our nerves as well as the opponents. I never had experience that again not with Cyprus football team or the one i support. When they won we were so happy like we won a billion euros. We might not be in Greece but that doesn't mean we are not Greek. We cry out of happiness with their successes and cry out loud with their failures. Help when ever we can. That makes us family. And family is everything!
I can respect a disciplined team, with lesser talent, but working double as hard. That trophy is all that counts. I am Dutch, and we 3 lost world cup finals(2 with beautiful football). If you ask me; I'd rather finally become a "ugly" world champion, then second place with attacking football. Its painful to lose 3 finals. Greece's trophy counts just as hard, as the only European championship in 1988 by The Dutch, with Gullit, Ronald Koeman, Rijkaard and Van Basten, but Greece will be put song side those players, as winners. As they deserve. They truly made history.
I still remember the entire building ,neighbourhoor/athens screaming a simultaneous *GOOOOOOOOOOOal* . The sound echo will be forever etched in my memory.
The fact is one for those who do not know the Greek reality and DNA. Throughout our history in peacetime, there was not a moment when the Greeks were united. But when there was a threat, no one looked at himself or his city, they all fought together for Greece. The German Otto Rehagel immediately understood this and formed a team that would play for the Greek pride. Unfortunately, our small country does not have the financial surface to be able to continue the feat of 2004.
I don't care what all those bitter people said, because of their defeats, we didn't play supposed fantasy football blah blah blah. We Greeks enjoyed it and lived it minute by minute to the highest degree!!! There we were, if they could, let them beat us. It was something that I don't think will happen again, if it was just one game I would say that we were lucky, but so many games in a row against the best teams in Europe is not luck, or maybe it's not just luck. An intelligent coach, Otto, understood our temperament and led the national team, which consisted of experienced players who had played together for years, to perfection. It was the moment (which lasted a month incidentally) of Greece. On the other hand, we the fans were sure from the beginning of the tournament (for some reason, none of us knew the reason), that we would lift the cup! One thing I still regret is that I didn't get on the plane to go to the final against the Portuguese.
Otto Rechangel , was a German tactic genious coach , he ruined the most talented teams at that period . He did the unbelievable! ! Eίναι τρελός , είναι τρελός ο Γερμανός, είναι τρελός ο Γερμανός , ! and '' Σήκωσε το, το τιμημένο , δε μπορώ , δεν μπορώ να περιμένω !.. was some of the slogans that time ... 4-3-3 and 5-3-2 ... ! Great transitions !
Greek ball possession snd shots were not so much different compared to other teams in their matches , so i dont they they weren't exciting matches , they just didn't liked losing with a few goals
Greetings from Greece You mentioned Matias Ameyda at one point. Well,he now is our team's coach AEK Athens. This man is a gift to worldwide football. He is so charismatic. He changed the entire meaning of football in our team. We claim tge championship and the Greek cup. We play very nice aggressive football. High pressings and quick ball re-gain. His team is also great, with Carlos Roa being my favourite!!! About 2004, i remember every single second of from all Greece matches. I was serving my military time back then... What days to remember. Well a trophy is still a trophy. Thats more then a lot of countries can say. Especially in Europe.

Im glad hes doing well, Wish the ownership here would have done more for him rather then continue to be cheap as hell.
He did great in a very competitive league. Perhaps, with a litle luck, you will see him in Champions league this season.
