    So the festival is called gai jatra. According to stories king pratap malla let his 3 sons to rule over the kingdom each for 1 year to know who would be a good future king. But during the coronation of 2nd prince the elephant he was riding got mad and steped on him killing him. Because of the death of her son queen went to depression. Seeing the sadness in his queen, the king ordered his citizens who had lost someone in past year to parade arround the city with cows (if no cow then children dressed as cows or in bhaktapur a chariot to represent cow called "taha macha"). He also gave reword to those who makes the queen laugh. as the parade began queen realsed that many people loose their loved ones like her. But except of being sad about loss we should except death as a part of life. Later a citizen made a satirical joke about the king that made the queen laugh. Hence gai jatra became a festival to honor the past ones and death as a part of live. It also became a way for people to express political concern and comment on king or people with power.

      Gai jatra of bhaktapur is especially unique. As the festival in other places are celebrated for 1 day whereas in bhaktapur it's for a week. the Chariot u saw in video is only a practice in bhaktapur It is called "taha macha". And the stick dance with the traditional drum music is called "ghantang ghising". Other dances like Maka pyakha(dance) , mahakali dance, bhairav dance, Devi dance etc are also performed. All of which is unique to bhaktapur only and not to other cities of Kathmandu and lalitpur.

    Since this video is recent, I believe this is from Sa: Paru (Gai Jatra). This is one of the major festivals celebrated throughout the Kathmandu Valley. In essence, it's a day when the entire city comes together to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away over the past year. It reminds us that we are not alone in our loss and encourages us to cherish the positive memories of those we've lost, moving forward in life without grief. The city hosts numerous events to bring everyone together, celebrating the beauty of life and recognizing that both life and death are just part of a larger journey.
    I'm sure Shanti will return to the U.S. with even more humility and respect for life and others after experiencing this! Loved the video too. BTW, this is from my hometown!

    • @aa6eheia156
      @aa6eheia156 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@pujalamichhane6552 yeah there are thousands of festivals, some are big and celebrated nationally while some are limited to local communities and towns. For example, each Newar town within the Kathmandu valley have many unique jatras which are not celebrated anywhere else in the same way. Bikset jatra in Bhaktapur town is different from Bisket jatra celebrated in Thimi and Bode. Khokana people don't celebrate Dashain and have their own jatras in the same time. Same Full moon day might be celebrated as Yomari Festival by Newar and Sakela by Kirat community. The number of festivals in Nepal is still unknown. We need to do survey of each and every community from every corner of the country to find the exact number and document them to save for future

    15:49 This is the main part of the festival where Bhairab(Hindu God) in the form of one big tahamacha(the thing with the umbrella on top that people are carrying) with other tahamacha makes a round circle and people in that circle sings and dances like in a concert to praise the god and the people that have died that year.
    It's a different vibe in Bhaktapur when it comes to jatra's or festivals like Bisket jatra and Gai jatra
    I like the Gai jatra here more than in Kathmandu and Lalitpur because of the vibe it creates.
