  • A Neighborhood Named 'The Dream' - Asyrmatos or Attaliotika or Petrina 4K
Asyrmatos or Attaliotika or Petrina is the district that stretches below the Filopappos ring road in Ano Petralona and stubbornly keeps the charm of the old Athenian neighborhood.
Near the historic center are Petralona, a picturesque area of Athens. It was named Petralona, because once in the place of the apartment buildings there were stone threshing floors. Over the years, it received various names that defined the situation that prevailed in the area at each time period.
In 1908 it was called Melitis-Varathron, probably because it was close to the ancient Varathron, a pit where the corpses of those sentenced to death were dumped in ancient times.
A second name was Katsikadika and referred to the area that extended to Kato Petralona. Its name was due to the flocks and herds that existed in the area.
The area was originally called Asyrmatos and was named after the Telegraph - Wireless department of the Navy War School, located west of Philopappos Hill.
After the Asia Minor catastrophe of 1922, 800 refugee families settled in the old quarry, behind the hill of Philopappos in Petralona. Most came from Antalya and Alaia in Asia Minor, which is why the settlement became known as Attaliotika.
Also known as the "dream district" from the film of the same name, which captured the dreams for a better life, for a new beginning of the 1922 refugees who settled in the area. Today for completely different reasons it remains a dream district.
During the December 1944 the War School along with its characteristic Wireless were completely burnt down, which then prompted the government to take the initiative to build in its place stone houses and a block of apartment buildings to relocate some of the refugees. who until then lived in slums. At the initiative of Queen Frederick, stone houses were built, known as the "Stone of Frederick".
The historic slum of Asyrmatos was the setting for the famous film "Synoikia to Oneiro" in 1961 by Alekos Alexandrakis. The film went down in history for the censorship it suffered and Alexandrakis' efforts to get it screened in cinemas.
The protagonists were Alekos Alexandrakis, Aliki Georgouli and Manos Katrakis. The story unfolded on Wireless and the main characters tried in every way to escape from their poverty. The refugees gave up their homes for the shooting and participated themselves as accomplices.
Many scenes from the film were cut on the grounds that it did not project a good image of Greece. In the end, it was played only in the cinemas of Athens, after pressures that reached the then Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis.
