Oh so I just gathered a few of the Hedgehogs and changed their colors (using existing in-game phantom color options), to reference the cast of the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie. So from left to right we have Tails, Shadow, Knuckles and Sonic. I've never seen those movies and I'm not particularly a fan of sonic games either (the music slaps tho), so I have no idea why I did this.
@@illusorywall Best Souls 2 at it again with the tiny details that no one would ever notice, lol. Thanks for all the work that goes into these videos, I love learning about all the strange invisible mechanics behind these games!
You're welcome! I'm super thankful for people who documented stuff like the network test back in the day. I played it as well, but didn't have a capture card for PS3.
Today my house burned down, my mother injured a nurse at the psych ward, my wife filed for divorce, my daughter was admitted into rehab again and Wall uploaded almost 2 hours of content about DS2 collision. Good day today
Using Snatcher music for unexpected discoveries is a pretty baller move. It does make me anxious someone's going to throw a dog through my window though.
This video showed me how much I took for granted or just glaze over as far as game design goes. So much effort between separate teams of designers making everything work as best as they can. I have a lot more respect for dark souls 2 now.
my youtube recap showed i was in the top 0.1% of illusory wall watchers, probably because i fell asleep to rewatching an episode of this series for months. not to mention just rewatching them because they are fire 🔥thanks for the awesome content glad to see another one! and be early to it
Some context for the bars, like shown in 3:17 - it is quite common for all games before modern techniques like UE5's nanite to have objects with smaller details (chain link fence, decorative window blinds, decorative signs) to create that complex shape via material, not actual geometry. They often look more 2D (because they are - they are, in reality, a solid plane of geometry), but are far less demanding on the hardware and thus more optimized. With modern approaches like mesh shaders/nanite/meshlet the complexity of geometry becomes far less impactful, so developers can just use actual geometry, no matter how crazy detailed it would be (though that would be mean far bigger file sizes for assets themselves).
I didn't know DS2 had much modding capability! I've always heard that its engine is a branch that was abandoned with a shocking number of differences, and that all further fromsoft games are based off the bloodborne branch. I assumed that meant there wasn't enough modding tools to do things like add a cut animation back in like was done for the stairs example. I'm not sure it would be quite a topic you have the expertise or interest in but I'd love to someday learn more about those engine differences in a video. Part of what makes me love DS2 is how it tries to copy DS1 so completely but instead fails to do so very well and the differences coming from that being their own interesting thing instead (though that made me hate it on release and only started loving it coming back years later). The fact that this extends the engine itself fascinates me and I want to know more.
57:25 I assume these walls are there because you can drop down to Vengarl's Head's space from up above (from the section with the Sublime Bone Dust in Scholar) to stop you from going out of bounds that way. It's a high fall and difficult to survive, but you can.
Like most game mechanics, invisible walls should be used to help keep the players immersed. Like an object breaking when attacked or our weapon bouncing off the solid wall because that's what would actually happen if someone struck it with one. The bane of a gamer's immersion are the boundary setting invisible walls that scream "we didn't have time to install visible & logical obstructions so here's a tall wall you can touch but can't interact with". Give me a pile of rubble we could logically step over or even the "return to mission area" message over nonsensical invisible walls.
I have rewatched ur videos multiple time just to fall asleep. U helped me with my insomnia. Not saying that videos are boring, but ur voice is camling. Btw, are u planning on making layout/out of bounds exploration of bloodborne?
At 17:40 you actually can get over here without the glitch if you exit the cardinal tower bonfire from the way you first get there you can backstep onto a ledge and jump across to the wood by the giant
ONE AND A HALF HOURS of Best Souls 2 engine minutiae after a lousy day at work? Let's goooooo dude, I knew the cosmos would reward my patience. Thank you based Illusory Wall.
I was just wishing you had done more Dark Souls 2 dissected videos a couple days ago! Not watched yet but I'm sure it will be great content as usual :)
So fun thing I learned just this past week, and I post this as I see you covering the Pursuer in Forest of the giants so sorry if it already comes up later, but while going through Brume Tower I found that using a spell like Yearn to lure the Possessed Armor enemies off cliffs doesn't have them fall to their deaths like other enemies, and now I'll have to watch through to see if they have the same invisible floor that Pursuer's boss room does. If specifics would be needed, it happened to me twice if memory serves, once just after the first big armor guy encounter and the other in the separate tower with the NPC invader who runs away.
I remember this time I was in Majula, testing some weapons in that area in front of Melentia, then I hit something and got staggered, even though there was nothing there to hit. I was hoping to see something about it in the video because that always bugged me, but I guess it's something that most people would never come across since I found it by accident.
Huh, that's strange! I'm not sure what might've caused that. I just double checked and couldn't find any stray collisions that might've caused that: imgur.com/a/shOvcQY
1:33:15 - there's a spot where you can do this at the top of Brume Tower as well. I'm not sure if this is a well known thing but I did record it if not.
What's going on with the spikey guys in the video's Outro/Credit section?
Brainrot compels me to assume a very random RWBY reference... 👀

If you really think about it, an invisible wall is basically the opposite of an illusory wall.
