Assembling frames from Mann Lake for a Langstroth deep honeybee hive

  • This video is very popular! Please tell me where you are from, and if you used these technique?
    I use a jig for assembling my frames. I've done frame assembly both with and without the jig, and most defiantly prefer the jig. Makes short work of frame assembly.
    I got the jig plans from www.myoldtools....

    +David Jastram, love it, I learned a new technique from you. My jig is a tad different in that I left one end loose, and use wingnuts and lag bolts to attach it so I can actually clamp the end boards snugly to the top and bottoms as I glue and staple. Also, you might want to staple UNDER the ears on the top boards, parallel to the top board. This will prevent staples from pulling out as you lift the ear and the frame is propolized to the hive body. Might not happen, but a horizontal staple thru the end board into the top board is a lot stronger than what you show here (which I used to do). Thanks for sharing!

    Jig looks like it works good. I prefer a one and a quarter inch staple in the bottom. That way you get 3/4" into the frame. A 5/8" would only be going in an eighth of an inch. Would not hold much. You do use glue though. That would hold more.

    Not sure why I can't reply to anthony jarboe's comment, but... since you don't have $10,000 to buy an air stapler, why not do like I did and but the $15.99 one from Harbor Freight?

    Homes when you get the all the top bars on you have the stapler pointed in the same direction staple the right side and just move across the side and stable the left side you don't even have to change the direction of the stapler don't quite understand the comment when you're stifling the ones on the right side of your jig your Staples pointed in the same direction and then we just move it over to the left side you still point in the same direction

    I enjoyed your video. I was wondering do these get painted or water sealed? I'm starting into bee keeping hobby next year and this is the preparation planning year. Unlike the chickens I have my wife is 100% behind the bees. :) Do you know of any concerns on what goes on the boxes? I'm planning my boxes to go in my corner lot near my chicken coop. th-cam.com/video/fxZfx-ZDw-U/w-d-xo.html and I want them to last forever, hot sun and wind so wood protection I think is needed.

    • @djastram
      @djastram  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Geek and chickens The frames need no treatment. The wood will last longer than you want to keep them anyway. On boxes, I use Kilz primer, and 1 coat of "Oops" paint from the hardware store, or you can check with Habitat ReStore in your area. They sometimes have cheap exterior paint. Thanks for watching.

    The bottom of the frame is a whole different issue because there's no lip to push your safety up when you're stapling the left side for spinning the Box might be necessary recommend putting up in your safety so it doesn't have to be pushed up I would never recommend such a

    wow that seems like a lot of work. I buy my glue in a large container and pour some out onto a plastic dish. then I take a small paint brush and brush my glue on. I use a staple on top then in the side. then one in the bottom. The side staple keeps the top secure a bit more.

    If you dont glue them you can remove one side and replace it when it cracks this also keeps any dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde in the glue contamination your bees

    • @djastram
      @djastram  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect exposure to glue is insignificant compared to what bees are exposed to in a corn field.

      It's a Brad Nailer. Can pick one up for around $40. Runs on compressed air.

    cool hive but in the videos I hate it like when you used your Staple gun. ex. "for the next step we will be using a $10,000 piece of equipment that most people don't have." that what I didn't like about this video
