I made a deal with myself. I can only purchase half the yardage as I use and I can only buy 1 new pattern after I have used 3 I've never made from my stash. So far working well. I also gave away a bunch of fabric to a young lady who is learning to sew. It so nice to walk into my little sewing room to a clean floor and not a bunch of stuff hanging out or sitting on the floor. Good luck to you.
Good stuff! I long for the days of walking into a clutter free sewing room!! I was thinking of doing the same with some of my fabrics (finding a seamstress to give them to) so this comment definitely solidifies that for me.
I love you and your honesty. I am very much inline with everything you’re saying and doing. I need to stop and be more mindful about what I’m buying and perhaps start purging. This video is just what I needed Julie! I have only been sewing garments for two years now and I already have way too much fabric and too many patterns. I got so excited with my new creative outlet and bought so much. I’m determined to sew all the pretty things that my head conjured up when I made these purchases. I have put together a journal with pictures of my fabrics and pattern suggestions for the fabrics. When I get itchy to consume online, I go to my journal and shop my stash and make a plan. It’s worked fairly well, but I have to admit that I’ve fallen off the wagon once or twice over the last few months. 😉 Day by day I hope to get better this year! 🙏🏼
I'm doing the no buy as well. I have donated quite a bit of fabric and patterns over the last year. I really want a curated stash because that leads to a curated wardrobe.
This is legit the most relatable video I've EVER seen. I needed to hear this. Wanting to sew.... I have all the things.... have sewn 0. I cannot become better if I dont do better.
yes yes yes. I'm on low buy too. i just started feeling overwhelmed by both the stash and all the makes filling my closet so I'm trying to slow down on both. I am allowing unlimited muslin making to have the fun of trying the patterns in my stash but only translating the best to final garments. I have a goal og using up any fabrics bought before 2021 or getting rid of them. After sewing now for 10 years I see that what I loved in the past often is not loved now so I have to really remind myself that when tempted to buy something. If I won't make it right away, will it become something I have to destash later...also I tell myself that there will always be a new fab fabric in a month, a year or so on. Styles change in patterns and colors and if I can wait to purchase closer to when I ready to make a pattern then it is more likey to be modern and fresh and not dated. *
I definitely had to realize how much I enjoy planning and shopping for projects (it’s dreamy, quick and easily done) versus doing the actual project. Now I keep a list of them and try to get through it before buying anything new. Once you break that new/shopping habit, the projects themselves are really enjoyable precisely because they’re slow and kind of meditative (and you get a great item at the end). I really picture my stash whenever I’m tempted to buy for the thrill of a new project, and put it off till there’s more time and space available.
This resonates deeply. When I first started garment sewing I thrifted a lot of fabric in 2020 which I said I would use for muslins and I would also pick up fabrics at Joanns or Hobby Lobby on sale l, some with plans and others I just liked. Then I got introduced to all those wonderful online fabric stores with all those gorgeous fabrics. It was ok because some I had plans for or may never see again because it was deadstock. Especially this past year I did not sew a lot but I planned a lot and bought fabrics for those plans that never materialized. I said no patterns this year and I've already broken that and for my fabrics I planned to only buy what I need to finish a project, such as lining or coordinating fabrics for a couple quilted projects I wanted to do. So far so good. Notions were fair game, in terms of I would buy what I needed. So my goal is to plan with my stash in mind and hopefully use up a decent amount of my stash. 🤞🏾 we use more than we buy!!
Good luck 👍. I’ve already decided that this is the ‘ Year of the stash’ for me. I have a small crafting space and my fabric is stored all over the place. I’m working my way through my fabric and I’m discovering lovely fabric I forgot I’d even bought! I’m determined to make a big dent in that fabric stash and get a grip! I’m keeping my sewing space tidier (not perfect) and it’s making sewing more pleasurable. Also I’m reducing temptation and now I avoid fabric haul videos and I’ve unsubscribed from fabric shops updates. We’re on a journey but we have to do this!
So many of us fall into this consumerist trap. I too have told myself no more patterns or fabric this year apart from lining as I have very little. My creativity has been stifled for far too long. Stash shopping/busting only for me! Good luck with your low buy year. Look forward to seeing what you make 😊
Thanks very much Julie for this video which really resonated with me. I have struggled with similar revelations over the past 6 months and is still trying to create a plan I a live with because I am a Fabric Addict! I understand the negative connotation the word‘addict’ can invoke, but that’s my truth 😢.
Spot on Julie! I do exactly the same and hearing you articulate this has really brought it home to me. I am also having a low buy year so let’s do this! ❤️❤️
I feel you on this! Good luck with your plans. I am only allowed to buy one pattern this year. That’s it. I want to hack what patterns I have to create what I want. And no fabric for me.
Phew I feel this hard! I think that there is a normalization in the sewing community of amassing a bunch of stuff, which just replaces our old sewing habits for RTW clothes with fabric and patterns. It's hard to build boundaries around! I'm really impressed by what you're doing and am trying to be mindful of this for myself this year. A few things that have helped me are: limiting my time on IG where seeing everyone's makes can be inspiring, but also overwhelming and confusing to one's personal style, AND doing Seamwork's design your wardrobe worksop to figure out exactly what I want to make for my various aspects of my life and style at this moment. I also love the idea of tracking money spent on sewing. Really smart and eye opening.
I like to look at my supplies in terms of time and production. How many garments do I make in a month? How long will my supply last. I have two shelves of fabric. About 25 projects worth. I sew 1-3 projects per month. That's an average of 2 per month so my fabric supply will last me about a year. Patterns are stored in boxes by type. Tops, pants, toppers, etc. I've not made anywhere near all of the patterns yet...and the boxes are mostly full. I've given myself a limit to not buy anything until the spring love notions sale. I will need to cull some in oreder to make room for anything I buy. If it won't fit in the box it's one in one out! It's so hard to do sometimes but I know that I have more fun with my craft when I am not overwhelmed with stuff and project plans. Good luck with your no buy and thanks for motivating me! 🙂
This hit home for me! I ran out of space on my fabric shelves and had a been having a hard time seeing and getting to things. So, i decided to go through my fabric stash. I've been measuring, washing, ironing and putting my fabric on "mini bolts." I've been working on it for almost a month and was on track to finish today and of course my iron broke 😢. The big take away is, I have too much fabric! It's been eye opening to realize i have 15 types of polyester lining and i dont even like the way it feels. I'm excited to track what i use from now on and buy with more intention in the future.
Omg I feel your entire vid! A lot is going on and we turn to what makes us happy, especially crafting. Interesting though what I’ve learned as a former eager shopper is that the more I had the less I actually enjoyed. I found that purging ,donating or gifting, the better I felt all around. I went from filing cabinets full of patterns to just 4 barely full clear shoe boxes. I made a point to purchase patterns that required less notions or non at all. I know it isn’t for everyone but it was a starting point for me to eliminate ALOT.
Haaaaa I’m soooo with you! I am currently sitting in all my ridiculousness and coming to terms with my truth. I’m 80% through with my organizing and am not buying a single piece of fabric, at least in 2024. Not going to say just how much, but let’s just say my dad came by and said, “Wow, it looks like a fabric store in here.” So I’m done. Good news is that I’ve been sewing through my stash for the last 6 months and only shopped for fabric twice….but no more for a while. I don’t even care if a project needs something I don’t have. That project will simply not begin. There are so many ideas to make that putting some to the side won’t matter. I couldn’t sew through all the ideas anyway.
Ahhh Julie I had this realisation a few weeks ago. I have too much, it will take me years to use what I already have. I've decided to buy fabric and patterns only for specific projects and if I don't already have something similar. I'm trying not to get sucked into discounts and sales. if I find something amazing in a charity shop then that's allowed. If it's my birthday or I attend a sewing event that's allowed too. Buying for the sake of it to get that dopamine hit is not allowed. Good luck.
I used to hoard, justifying as I sewed for my children as well as my work attire. Now, empty nest and not working, yet still sewing... Re: fabric: limit to 3 yd and only what I need( knit, woven, etc) Patterns: only buy@joanns during sales; look @ line drawing Not photo, if I have similar, don't buy, HACK. Also wardrobe patterns - all in 1. Notions: as needed. Lists,lists,lists.. every UFO in closet, why not finished? Don't hit joann's or fabric district without intent without list . To me, it's exciting and liberating, to stay on course!!
I have come to this same conclusion. I have already done a fabric purge and I am going through and getting rid of patterns. I have so many patterns that are just styles that I would never personally wear and purchase the pattern simply to have it. I am one who does more shopping than sewing and I have decided this year it will be more sewing than shopping. I am learning to shop what I already have and only purchase what I absolutely need. Also I told myself that if I buy fabric for a pattern I cannot buy anything until I have completed that project.
I'm interested in seeing how your journey goes! I work at a creative reuse center, that gets several tons of fabric a year. What stops me from building a huge stash is that I block out time in my calendar to sew through my stash. I also save everything I want to purchase and re evaluate it a few weeks later before I actually buy it. When you get caught up in the "I need it now" mentality, it's SEW easy to buy things right then and there. But I'm rooting for you!!
Taking stock is the beginning of the shift. It's great that you have realizes what the problem is and are being realistic going forward. I didn't have quite as much but it was enough to make me doubt myself about future purchases. I had to ask myself, "what makes me think I will use this pattern/fabric when I haven't used all these other items in my stash?" So instead of buying more, I did take the time to inventory fabric, patterns, items to be refashioned. It's a good exercise. I did get rid of some things and I am working on using up what I have. I am ok with making things even if they don't end up getting worn. I can donate them and move on.
I just started sewing a few months ago and I already feel like I’m on the overconsumption path. I think I already own at least 40 patterns and I just started sewing 3 months ago. Definitely going to focus on using the patterns that I have instead of buying a new pattern every time I watch a new TH-cam video. Excited to watch you use up your stash.
It's so easy because there is just so much out there and it all looks so good! Pattern hacking is also a lot of fun too once you get into a groove with it. I'm looking forward to digging into the stash too!
i know exactly how you feel. one thing that really helped me was organizing my patterns in Trello. now i know exactly what i already have and it's easier to "shop my stash" because my entire library is on my phone. and i have so many freaking patterns that it really curbed by desire to buy new ones because almost any new design that comes out... guess what? i very likely already have something similar. good luck with your journey and i can reassure you that once you get started making new habits, it gets easier.
Love the intro and outro music,Julie. Fun and polished. I have a closet that I primarily shop. When I buy i have plans for it. I am itching to sew up much of my spring wardrobe for my daughter from the stash.
I just started learning to sew again and all i wanna do is buy buy buy...this video helps so I'm mindful of my spending habits but all i wanna do is buy more fabric...lol.
I totally understand your experience and have been there. I wish you success in getting all under control. I have cleaned up my area and focused, and it has helped.
Thank You for this much needed video! I have been sewing for 50 years and then some. The majority of them operating my own custom wedding gown/formalwear business for over 40 years. Now retired mostly, I'm focusing on my own wardrobe but...swamped with so much fabric that's bursting the seams of my small home!! I have not even counted my patterns and although I gave many away or sold many, I still have patterns in abundance! OUT OF CONTROL problem that clutters my creativity. So like you, I'm trying to restrict myself in purchasing. I was recently gifted 2 large KALLIX units with glass doors with 12 cubbies each. Those are still in boxes waiting to be assembled. I realized that those units will need to be assembled in the actual small bedroom because otherwise I can't move them. But before that happens, I'm slowly sorting the fabrics that are in the way and on top of my portable cutting table while moving things out and trying to find a home for a hide-a-bed that we don't use. What a HOT MESS!!! Making slow progress and trying to be patient during this somewhat frustrating process. I am motivated to get this done and make it work! Wishing you much success in your Low Buy Year! Don't give up! We can do this!
Yes! We can totally do this, the first step is always the hardest and it seems you've already taken yours so cheers to a year of successful de-cluttering and blossoming creativity!
Julie, You sound so frustrated. Fellow hoarder here. I still purchased fabric and patterns, for years, though I was not actively sewing. And, we won't talk about pattern duplication.😏🤭🥴 Anyway, I started back to sewing in January 2024 and told myself AND my daughter that we can't go back to our favorite spots in Philly until I completely use all the fabric I bought there last year, and the fabric I purchased somewhere else earlier the year before, ...for which I had to buy a new set of rolling drawers to store it all.🤨 Wishing you much success! You can do this!
Yeah, same 😟. Duplicate patterns sometimes, more fabric and patterns than I can handle, and the "what was I thinking?!?" feelings of shame that go along with it all - it's because it's fun to get new stuff, bottom line - we crave novelty, things are pretty or exciting and we want them, we get an idea and want to make it happen, we see something someone else has done and want to do it ourselves, too - the list of why goes on and on. Being able to put things on a credit card makes it frictionless to purchase - some people only pay cash so they slow themselves down that way. I could never be one of those people who only buys for the next project, sews it and then repeats the process (for one thing, I'd have to get rid of years worth of stuff!) but that seems like such a clean, guilt-free way to do things! There can be a false feeling of thriftiness or security, too, in thinking that you have plenty of stuff so you are ready for anything (if all the fabric stores suddenly closed and you couldn't buy any more fabric! Gotta stock up against a worldwide fabric shortage, ha, ha!) or if you bought a lot of stuff on sale and are congratulating yourself on how much money you "saved," for example - but if all that stuff does is sit there and not get used, it's money spent that's not returning anything and you are losing any interest you might have made from investing it. Now, having said all this, I have also thought that you would never tell a gardener they had too many flowers, and my fabric stash is kind of like my pretty indoor garden, so there's that aspect of it...can an art collector have two many paintings? I do remind myself, though, when I'm out buying things that I am buying a dream in many instances. I need to do better. One way to get rid of things is to ask yourself, "would I buy this now?" and if the answer is no, then why are you keeping it? Great video and good luck to us all!!!
I have started cataloging my fabric stash in Trello. I take photos of the fabric, yardage, width, compsition, etc. After doing a few entries I stopped because I was so tired plus I have fabric that is 10 years old lol. I knew then I had to just start sewing it and stop hoarding it. And recently, I had to put most of my fabric in totes. I purchased 10 totes and still was not enough 😅 -- I'm not buying more totes. It's hard because my birthday is coming up and I keep getting coupon codes to celebrate my bday by shopping 😂😂. I also organize my patterns in Google Keep which helps me not buy duplicates.
I think the consuming over creating thing is a real issue. I thrift a lot of my fabric and I worry that I’m not finding good pieces when I have bins and bins of fabric. I have rough ideas for most of my yardage, in January I made a list, a bakers dozen of potential projects. I have started on this list but I’m allowing my self to add (or subtract) from this list as I’m inspired. So a low buy year (notions and support products are ok) for me as well and staying home saves money! I’m on my fourth piece and it feels so good put my ideas into practice.
I love this video! I just went through my pattern stash and pulled out all of the ones that I absolutely love but haven't made yet. So next time I have time to sew I am working through that pile and also only using my stash to make them up. I already have at least 5 pattern/fabric pairings ready to go. I am hoping that will help me not immediately buy the next cute pattern I see or the next fabric since I know I have plenty. My other new goal for myself is to check my pattern stash BEFORE buying any new patterns since I most likely have something very similar already that I can hack.
Wow! Excellent video! You make some excellent points that we can all relate to. The core is how to express ourselves verses consuming a product. I applaud you for setting boundaries so your true style can sing.
I feel all the things she said but I’m also dealing with a feeling of not having anything to wear. I have all the fabric and patterns but my wardrobe and my kids wardrobe is awful. I hate buying ready to wear because I can make anything but I haven’t come to terms that I can’t make everything. This cycle leads to not having cute daily essentials for me and my kids. 😣😣😣
I’ve noticed this for myself. The solution is to STOP SHOPPING HAULING! Yes Shopping your stash! Do not buy one pattern a month or any more fabric. You will need to buy notions only when you need them. Just sew, create a capsule wardrobe for yourself. I found that I really enjoy some patterns and not others. I really do not like to sew or have time for very detailed patterns. Simple patterns and fabulous fabrics really work for me. Styles are really basically the same and some styles are best for my body than others. I stopped following someone else’s ideas and bring forth my own
As an idea, you could haul your pattern stash for patterns that you don't really need (either repetitions or things that don't fit your style) and which others might enjoy. You could look for people who own patterns you like (and don't have yet) and who want the patterns you want to get rid of. You could make a pattern swap then through the comments (I don't suggest doing a live because it could lead to impulsive decision making).
I feel exactly like you!!! That I have sooo much fabric and patterns and when it’s time to sew I can’t because it’s too many choices and my work space is so cluttered with all the choices I just walk out of my sewing room and do nothing!
This is a nice reflection and I see myself in some of the issues you described. I think that mentally I am not ready to add limits to my craft shopping but I am taking notes and noticed that the ones I aften forget how much I spend on is on patterns (mostly because I buy alot of PDF's). Having a monthly review of my craft purchases will for sure be beneficial.
I stopped buying PDF patterns when I realized I didn’t have the energy to print, glue or tape and cut them. Just so exhausted after that that I rarely made the garment 😩😩
I find when I do this, it works! If I'm spending time sewing right after work I'm less likely to waste time and money at the sewing store. Or I only pick up notions on a busy lunch for errands so I can't look at fabric 😂
I'm in a similar situation with my stashes. I love sewing AND knitting as well as other hobbies and stash acquisition is absolutely a separate hobie from actually making things. My big problem is that I will never look a gift horse in the mouth and I have connections where I randomly receive multiple tubs of fabric from a local thrift store because they don't want to sell it anymore. I try to go through and just pick out things I love and then move the rest along to other people who sew, but at this point I have so much fabric i can't store it all. I seethe potential in everything, which can be both a blessing and a curse. But I never want to tell this woman to not being me fabric! I have been given some truly amazing fabrics for freethis way and I never want to cut off that flow lol. Its a struggle.
I've shopped vicariously through everyone here for years. If I see a pattern I want, I immediately look for a free pattern first and download it. Of course I have tons I have downloaded, even multiple times, however, my money is still in my pocket. You made a great point about the thread too. I also shop for fabric off season once it goes on clearance. Do you ever go to sewing swaps?
If you want to sell some patterns that are easy or fabric I just started sewing two weeks ago. My friend warns me about collecting. It does become addictive. I love shopping as well. I’m only trying to buy at the 1.99 sales.
I hit this wall a couple years back when I found two of the exact same pattern! 🙄
I cull through my patterns several times a year, I find it soothing, and I ruthlessly cull patterns after sewing. But, I also started following Claire Kennedy’s process of perfecting a handful of patterns, rather than starting over each time. This has resulted in a handful of pants patterns versus the pile I had previously. This works for me.
But, I also love unique blouse patterns, so I give myself leave to buy those when I come across one.
As to fabric, I have put myself on a no buy, and some months I am more successful than others! I reuse fabrics for muslins when I can, and buy sheets at the local thrift store when I don’t have the fabric to reuse.
I do find myself being more creative when I have to develop a fix rather than finding an easy “to buy” button somewhere along the way.
In short, you aren’t alone Julie! 🤞 for our 2024. 😉

Great tips, especially the one on taking in too much inspiration! Thanks for watching!
I love how committed you are to the process. I think I may be doing too easy on myself with my intentions LOL but ya gotta start somewhere right 😅
Thanks for this. I am encouraged to sew from my stash. Whew, I need to hear this. 😏
Good luck.
You called me out 😂😂😂 I feel attacked!!!
😆😊😆
Me too!!! We just moved and I was ashamed of how much stuff I had. I am slowing down my spending A LOT!
Same here!
I used to hoard, justifying as I sewed for my children as well as my work attire. Now, empty nest and not working, yet still sewing...
Re: fabric: limit to 3 yd and only what I need( knit, woven, etc)
Patterns: only buy@joanns during sales; look @ line drawing Not photo, if I have similar, don't buy, HACK. Also wardrobe patterns - all in 1.
Notions: as needed.
Lists,lists,lists.. every UFO in closet, why not finished? Don't hit joann's or fabric district without intent without list . To me, it's exciting and liberating, to stay on course!!
Love the tips. I hadn't thought about using lists - love that tip most of all!
I had to ask myself, "what makes me think I will use this pattern/fabric when I haven't used all these other items in my stash?"
So instead of buying more, I did take the time to inventory fabric, patterns, items to be refashioned.
Thanks so much!!
One good way to stop over shopping is to not look at sales promotions. If you don't know about the item, you won't want it. Good luck.
Destashify will take it or you can resell!
You’re a boss! This video gave me ideas to help my buying. Thank you
Julie,
You sound so frustrated.
Watching the video back I think I was ranting a bit but I'm so fed up with myself at this point 😆😅 thanks for the well wishes 💛
I agree and love you plans going forward with sewing
I did design your wardrobe on seamwork. It really helped me focus on what to make and I found a lot of stuff in my stash to use up.
That is awesome! I've seen a video or two on that program over on the seamwork channel. Love that it worked so well for you!
I love the idea of a monthly review, that would be a fun video to watch. Patterns are so hard to keep track of!
I stopped buying PDF patterns when I realized I didn’t have the energy to print, glue or tape and cut them. Just so exhausted after that that I rarely made the garment 😩😩
@@robinwigginson4465 It is very expensive to get paper patterns in portugal. I wish I could get the 1.99$ deals here
I am stuck with PDF's 🥲
Oh boy.....can I relate!
It's like I was listening to myself :)
If you want to sell some patterns that are easy or fabric I just started sewing two weeks ago. My friend warns me about collecting. It does become addictive. I love shopping as well. I’m only trying to buy at the 1.99 sales.
girl do not feel bad at all I,m right there with ya i have so much it out of control my room is busting at seems !!!!
😆😆 they say acknowledging is the first step!
TED talk worthy.
Yes yes yes to all of it
😆 we got this!
