      @@jackholloway1 Yeah it's not so black and white the Scots did some scheming and invading of their own, with much less success.
      But if your country was invaded or lorded over and its culture suppressed up until around the 1800s I think you'd understand a lot better the anger some people still feel.
      Theres also more modern reasons as to why people dont like england. The scottish referendum for independence wasnt just for a laugh. 45% voted to leave the union, that isnt just born out of 200 year old grudges.

      This is Scots, technically. If you want to learn English properly, there are only three legitimate ways to do it: 1) copy Hugh Grant, 2) copy Danny Dyer or 3) copy Mr. Bean. Those are the only real English accents - anything else is either northern, Scottish or foreign (including Irish). Its true, ask any true Engerlish person.

    it’s kinda true, I live in the central belt and I remember when I was in high school being asked what places in Scotland we’d define as being “truly Scottish” the whole of the class said Glasgow or the Highlands and Islands, then we were asked what we wouldn’t consider as being “truly Scottish” then we said Edinburgh because they are posh and speak with hybrid English accents, the people living in the borders also have weird accents and are too close to England for anyones liking. St Andrews and Aberdeen are too stuck up and international in their gated communities and Shetland is practically norway and still votes Lib Dem. it’s funny how we have such a proud national identity that if your posh or speak with a non heavy Scottish accent then your basically English.

Gaelic has been taught even in lowland West Lothian primary schools since the early 90s at *least* when I was there. Meanwhile, West Lothian has spoken English or something of the sort since 900 AD. Yet we're unconditionally always claiming some sort of subjugation or dispiritedness etc etc etc. It is unilateral self-derangement, the whole thing.

    We moved to Edinburgh for a few months and I remember actually not meeting that many actual Scottish people just around and about. There were English, Australians, europeans... who were all obviously nice and friendly. But the estate agents, the people working in pubs, even some of the famous Whiskey shops, the barber of a random barbers I walked into for a cut (English), people when we went on a night out. We met a few proper Scots, obviously. Probably. I think. We definitely did.

    He's right about Edinburgh. I've lived here all my life its not like it was in the 70s. It's been gentrified for the rich with born in the blood edinburghers have been priced out the city. Its still a great place to live and is a fantastically cosmopolitan city but the rich are taking over.

      I grew up in Edinbugh (Muirhouse) in the 60's and 70's. Edinburgh was always more English than the rest of Scotland. I think it was / is to do with its 'capital city' role, lots of english influence and civil service jobs.
      You only had to go as far south as Penicuik, or across to Fife to get to real Scotland.

      Everyone from Cardiff has a Welsh accent, especially if they're from a working class area. The only reason it's fainter than other parts of Wales is because this little thing happened where the English continually fucked us for several centuries in a deliberate attempt to strip us of our language and culture.

    You can say this about lots of places though. People from the West Country don’t think Bristol represents them, people from ritual Gloucestershire don’t think Gloucester represents them. Most English people certainly don’t think London represents them. Cities are melting pots, that’s true everywhere, not just Scotland.

I don't know anyone here with a local accent - even people who were born and brought up in Chelt sound like they're from London. And as far as I'm concerned London isn't England, it's London.       @@doe8792 I'm not saying that one land is more German than the other. I'm saying that Berlin is as indicative of Germany as New York is of America. Plus, Berlin is very specific as it had been under American, French and Soviet military rule simultaneously for decades. Bavaria has the architecture, the food, the historical monuments and the overall chill synonymous with German culture. That doesn't mean these things don't appear somewhere else as well.

      Edinburgh's like a snow-globe. A pretty object, a pleasant scene kept preserved under glass. You give it a shake and admire it once or twice a year. Otherwise forgotten and left on a shelf. Glasgow is lived-in.

    English guy who recently went to Edinburgh for thr first time. People say Leith is rough but I found it to be chock full of fucking hipsters and students everywhere. The only time I ever heard a scottish accent in Edinburgh was when I got in a cab. The rest its either English or Chinese. Limmy is right tbf.
