The Battle of Stalingrad was probably the deadly battle in WW2; there, two million died in that single battle alone. D-Day as an operation went surprisingly well, the beach that got hit the hardest however was Omaha Beach which is what is shown in most media forms.

I think what Rocco was trying to say about Odyssey is that it does the Mario formula extremely well, but he wishes that it was a bit more ambitious with the formula.
I'm not sure it's overly safe. I'm sure abandoning the objective-based "you choose this star in the menu, this is the one you're going for and the level changes based on which star you chose" thing has been polarizing among some people. I'm relieved the cappy thing didn't make it feel "less mario" and it fits comfortably with the typical Mario controls. I like Sunshine but aiming with fludd didn't feel good.
Yeah cappy fits in and has little to no learning curve compared to SMS. The loss of the objective based choose the star concept has a bigger effect than you may think. If you compare it to sm64 you needed 60% of the stars to beat the game, but in odyssey you only need 15% of the moons to beat the game. It's like they traded challenge for accessibility which goes to the point of it feeling like a market research game. Again it's not a bad game it just wasn't pushed to its fullest potential.
If they added a hub world where you controlled the Odyssey ship and could choose which next land to go to I think that would rectify what Rocco was talking about. You go from land to land in a mostly linear fashion in this game. The gameplay is great but almost a bit too linear for me I wish there were always more choices of where to go to like Mario64 had.
I think what Mario Odyssey lost in the open world exploration was more than made up for in a genuinely fun and jovial narrative. Every world felt like you were there for a reason, to solve a problem, but you also need power moons so it made sense for Mario to piss around stacking goombas and flinging chain chomps. The cut scenes were awesome, the score was amazing, the levels were incredible, and it was all strung together with a nicely flowing story. What more could you ask for?
About what Rocco said about Odyssey, I agree in the sense that the worlds could have been a lot more weird and whimsical. They're extremely fun to travel in and explore, but other than metro and luncheon kingdoms, they feel very standard and afraid to get weird. This isn't helped by how a lot of moons are gotten in the same way using the same group of assets (musical notes, catching a bunny, finding a key, making a dog find a certain spot, etc). If Galaxy can get a sequel, I hope Odyssey can get one too so they can really draw out that weirdness.
Related somewhat to the Serial Killer/good evil discussion, there's a book that i think is really cool, people should check out if you have any sort of interest in the subject. It's called The Psychopath Inside: A Neuroscientist's Personal Journey Into the Dark Side of the Brain by James H. Fallon. It's sort of the inverse of the idea Derrick brought up; It's written by this neuropsychologist who analyzes the brains of Serial Killers, and in doing so realizes that he himself is a psychopath. Like, his brain scans and the subjects he's analyzing are basically identical. He's not dangerous, but seemingly only because he was fortunate enough to have a really stable and happy childhood so none of his "Triggers" could ever go off and turn him into an Ed Kemper type. He calls himself a "Pro-social psychopath". Super fascinating read, try it out
I like combining the costumes so like the cowboy hat and the black tux makes him look like an oil baron, or the Samurai helmet and the Pirate costume makes him look like a more badass Samurai with an eye patch
i think you guys just dont have a lot of experience with ww2 fps. The beaches of Normandy have been done to death, the campaign of cod ww2 felt like the most generic ww2 campaign ever.
Idk if the trailer was the reason Blade Runner wasn't successful at the box office. I've recommended it to dozens of people & they have all said they either haven't seen it or won't see it because of the run time. That coupled with the fact that its a sequel of a movie that was made 35 years ago with a similar run time is probably the biggest reason why people avoided it.
Holy shit this episode is a powerhouse. I feel like a miniature bus just drove straight the fuck through my face. Also Shawn gathered his strength when he was away and his power is at unprecedented levels. If Garrett was in this episode it would simply be too much for the world to handle. God dammit great fucking episode.
Shawn, the Duffer brothers wrote season 2 before season 1 aired (according to them), because they wanted to avoid hyped up stuff creeping into the story
i totally feel what rocco is saying about mario. i wish we had those kinds of super cool exploration based easter egg filled hubworlds that helped tie the whole game together. Any time you have a level select it totally breaks the immersion and doesn't feel special.
Wasn't paying attention for a little bit of it and thought they were still talking about Mario Odyssey when they were thinking about killing nazis and D-Day
I and all my friends have Xbox, I'm thankful for that. Halo, Forza, KI, and Gears are console sellers for me. The Xbox exclusive statement was talking about Minecraft.
I think the reason a lot of people see movies in theatres isn't really for the movie itself, but for the experience of seeing a movie with friends. This would explain stuff like people seeing Thor 3 (and 2, for that matter) when they didn't like the first. It's incredibly rare, maybe less than once a year, that I see a movie in theatres because I actually care about seeing the specific movie. I don't think I'm alone on this. I mean fuck me I saw the emoji movie in theatres because it was hanging out with friends. I was indeed a emptier person when I left that theatre, but my friends really wanted to see it and it's an experience to see even a shitty movie with them.
I haven't played Odyssey yet, but yeah I miss the exploration involved in finding the levels in 64 and Sunshine. I loved Galaxy and Galaxy 2 but their hub worlds were very weak. All four are great games though
They always talk about how their social media is blowing up about whatever pop culture comic whatsit mega64 doesn't give a shit about and it's like, "wwwhy did you fill your feed with these people, when everything they do ends up irritating you?"
The new Mario is so fucking good. But I miss the lower set of "STARS" "SHINES". The set 120 made you feel like each time you would enter the world, a new challenge to tackle that could take around 20 - 30 mins (Mario sunshine as my example.) I just feel getting like 8 moons in the span of 5 mins never compares to...the 1 SHINE at the top of the tower, you have to talk to someone on the beach to have the camera point all the way to the top of the tower, take the long path to it. Falling rocks, any enemy out there to KNOCK YOU THE FUCK OFF of the stage or just right to the very fucking bottom.
"why the fuck are you seeing it" because I like the director who's attached, wanted to see his take on it, and there aren't a lot of other good movies out right now.
your video on the movie industry also described a lot of how people talk about shows and movies these days. i only just recently watched stranger things because i wanted something halloweeny to watch. but everybody just says 'oh its great just watch it' um but what is it about give me something 'oh well u just have to watch it its great trust me its on netflix' i really miss when people could tell u why something was good and why u should check it out
The look on Derricks face when Rocco is listing his gripes on Mario Odyssey is how a lot of people felt. Jeez Rocco, just go play Mario 64 on the unreal engine if you want that openness again
Rocco, I understand. It's very different from 64 and Sunshine and to fans of those titles it is a bit disappointing. Moons and exploration in Odyssey aren't what I want in future. Too bad that, even though Derrick says Odyssey and BotW are different, they are similar due to both teams working closely in junction with each other. Korok seeds and shrines are very similar to moons and purple coins.
You guys DID a video years ago that sort of looked at that whole "veterans playing a war game" thing. It was for your, very funny, Heroes Over Europe video. th-cam.com/video/8_Y1JX0Bvkk/w-d-xo.html Shawn and Rocco were the elderly people who had seen some crazy shit and Derrick was a young jerk that was complaining about how he went through trauma when he accidentally plugged the console out while playing the game lol.
32:30 They were actually just German (and other nationalities) soldiers on the beaches of Normandy for the most part. Actual Nazis were people like the SS officers and higher ranking officials.

Totally see what Rocco is saying. I respectfully disagree, I think Odyssey is a deceptively new formula for Mario games, and I respect all the things it does well, I would just still prefer a Galaxy 3. I miss the spherical worlds, hub world and cosmic space orchestral themes.

Like in the operations, the announcer goes into detail about the battle you’re about to fight saying what would have happened if either side won. Cod just feels like a bad lazy imitation, it’s like they just banked on it being successful because “Its old! Right guys? Now buy our fucking game”. Even the name “Cod: ww2” is so damn lazy.
5 minutes in annd this is already a classic. Mega64 podcast game mad strong right now
The Battle of Stalingrad was probably the deadly battle in WW2; there, two million died in that single battle alone. D-Day as an operation went surprisingly well, the beach that got hit the hardest however was Omaha Beach which is what is shown in most media forms.

How the fuck is he 35? I would have guessed like 28? Damn. Lol
I love how even the word "girlfriend" is bleeped when Derrick lists "his current girlfriend."
Based upon 3:24 I'm sure Garrett will never miss a podcast again haha.
Derrick Acosta, master of volume
I got 15 seconds in when i saw your comment.
Derrick has always been my favorite Mega64 member, I love him even more after this
I think what Rocco was trying to say about Odyssey is that it does the Mario formula extremely well, but he wishes that it was a bit more ambitious with the formula.
OH man Derrick, have you seen Mario Sunshine Bowser? He's GIGANTICCCCC in that game!
I think I was 14 when I first started watching you guys, and I'm 23 now
Glad someone else noticed Bowser’s hair
I get what Rocco is talking about. The new mario is good but only good as it is extremely safe.
I'm not sure it's overly safe. I'm sure abandoning the objective-based "you choose this star in the menu, this is the one you're going for and the level changes based on which star you chose" thing has been polarizing among some people. Rocco genuinely giggling like a schoolgirl is priceless
bodak yellow should be the new official podcast theme song
Helluva I totally agree with this!!
Ugh I feel old
really fits well
Helluva Perfectly fitting.
nice to see Garrett porked so many racial slurs
he's Mr. Worldwide
Random Assault Podcast "Da le" or however it's spelled.
I was listening to the podcast rather than watching, so I was so fucking confused when the bleeps happened. Lol
Derrick's reactions during Rocco's Mario discussion killed me. Derrick was on point in this one.
I think what Mario Odyssey lost in the open world exploration was more than made up for in a genuinely fun and jovial narrative. I can't help but be reminded of James Willems when I see that CoD WW2 image that they used for the thumbnail. Got them piercing eyes.
it should be 2006

Derrick coming up in the theme song was perfect to the song LMAO

I think this podcast was secretly sponsored by Nintendo. They just won't own up to it. Shawn's bottle at 9:36 confirms it
In retrospect, 2017 was one of the best years for movies in the past decade.
It sounds like Rocco is talking about Metroidvania style when he's talking about what's missing from Mario games
Derek watch Death Note the anime. Its exactly what you want. A guy who has everything and is popular becomes a killer.
what does the future hold for bowser?
Shawn, the Duffer brothers wrote season 2 before season 1 aired (according to them), because they wanted to avoid hyped up stuff creeping into the story

that intro music is so good for the intro LMAO
i totally feel what rocco is saying about mario. i wish we had those kinds of super cool exploration based easter egg filled hubworlds that helped tie the whole game together. Any time you have a level select it totally breaks the immersion and doesn't feel special.

Acquired a Space Invaders bow tie on clearance recently, so that should split the difference between the Days.
I and all my friends have Xbox, I'm thankful for that. Halo, Forza, KI, and Gears are console sellers for me.
The Xbox exclusive statement was talking about Minecraft.
I really didnt expect bodak yellow as the intro music

Yeah I’m 23 and started watching Timbo at 14ish
Holy hell. I know this is so late but I don't understand having issues with odyssey. It's so perfect for the series
It seems like the main deal is rocco likes botw more than odyssey. And that's legit.
Nintendo is on record saying that they are going after the adult demographic with the switch.
The new Mario is so fucking good. But I miss the lower set of "STARS" "SHINES". The set 120 made you feel like each time you would enter the world, a new challenge to tackle that could take around 20 - 30 mins (Mario sunshine as my example.)

When I stormed the beaches of Normandy I laughed
I totally get what Rocco means, the new Mario is great but I feel like there’s not a consistent hub world with seem less exploration
Didn't you guys already use this picture for a podcast thumbnail? It's recalling something in my brain holes.
I would like to see The Legendary Journey Shirt (w/Pocket) back in stock!
Bowser was pretty fucking huge in Sunshine
Bowser in Sunshine was a fucking behemoth wasn't he?
The new frontier of Mario came in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
True. I wanted the the Switch for BoTW, but now you got the Nintendo emulator working fine on the PC and runs BoTW smoothly.
7:55 Took 6 years before they got around to it.
Totally agreeing with Rocco. I feel like the only one who just didn’t love Odyssey. I enjoyed it a lot but it just didn’t exceed my expectations.
Landon Upchurch he said he loved it
100% agree with Rocco when it comes to Mario. Odyssey is definitely not innovative like Mario64 was.
I think I understand Rocco's point on the new Mario. You see I don't like it, but I enjoyed playing it.
"why the fuck are you seeing it" because I like the director who's attached, wanted to see his take on it, and there aren't a lot of other good movies out right now.

I am not motivated to get a Switch yet, but the second they announce a new smash bros I'll be runnin to Best Buy and making my best buy
Mindhunter first episode was dry as fuck but episode 2 onwards just snowballed for me. Acting was really good
I agree with Rocco 100%, totally not disappointed at all in what I got, but there was something definitely missing
randoman101 If there was something missing you are disappointed!!!
Gettin' my Derrick Acosta movie aesthetic fix...
would rocco kill lena dunham if he was put into a self defense situation and legally had to defend himself?
Ehergiez when guys?
CoD 2 based on real WWII battles. This conversation of discomfort is over a decade too late.
I'm still waiting on a restock of the Metal64 shirt......
If Microsoft puts Halo or Gears (Literally the only exclusives I can think of) on PlayStation or Switch that will be a huge mistake.
Medal of Honor Allied Assault did D-Day as well
You guys forgot "Movie of the Year"
You guys DID a video years ago that sort of looked at that whole "veterans playing a war game" thing. It was for your, very funny, Heroes Over Europe video. th-cam.com/video/8_Y1JX0Bvkk/w-d-xo.html
Shawn and Rocco were the elderly people who had seen some crazy shit and Derrick was a young jerk that was complaining about how he went through trauma when he accidentally plugged the console out while playing the game lol.
poor garrett
Mario Galaxy 2 actually had the biggest bowser IIRC.
Sunshine bowser was pretty big too.
Personally, I think both Mario Odyssey and BotW fell short on their soundtracks.
Great spit take Derrick
i bought a bowser amiibo because hes so effin hot in this game
11:28
32:30 They were actually just German (and other nationalities) soldiers on the beaches of Normandy for the most part. Actual Nazis were people like the SS officers and higher ranking officials.

Totally see what Rocco is saying. I respectfully disagree, I think Odyssey is a deceptively new formula for Mario games, and I respect all the things it does well, I would just still prefer a Galaxy 3. I miss the spherical worlds, hub world and cosmic space orchestral themes.
i think rocco is just saying they didn't really get out their comfort zone with odyssey as they did with breath of the wild
The Galaxy series is dead now. Get out of the past.
bowser is so handsome in odyssey
After playing battlefield 1 for over a year now, cod ww2 feels so damn small and lazy. Also I feel like battlefield 1 kinda handled ww1 in a semi-tasteful way and it feels like cod has tried to do the same with ww2, but in such a fucking hamfisted way. Im not a fanboy at all, but that’s my 2 cents.
Battlefield 1 shat all over WW1, just like COD WW2. Fun game but in terms of authenticity and feel it may as well have been a WW2 game.
Scott Christiansen at least battlefield teaches you things. Like in the operations, the announcer goes into detail about the battle you’re about to fight saying what would have happened if either side won. Cod just feels like a bad lazy imitation, it’s like they just banked on it being successful because “Its old! Right guys? Now buy our fucking game”. Even the name “Cod: ww2” is so damn lazy.
are you being serious?
ackshually
My group of friends all prefer and swear by Xbox, I only have one in order to play with them. No luck trying to get them to switch platforms :/
If you guys like dressup you should play ever oasis for 3ds. you can get hats
I NEED THAT LIST
I'll only buy a switch when they announce a new animal crossing game.
So are you playing animal crossing these day?
Make an animation with chris savino creator of the loud house
do a billy and his time belt for CODWII
Where is the far left one, the one with the hair and all the sex?
whats with derrick making things plural? groundhogS day, mindhunterS smh come on guy get it together
So what? rocco loved the new mario but he didn't like playing it
