Vancouver Best Eats - Mr Red Cafe

Mr Red Cafe is a Vietnamese restaurant with 2 locations in Vancouver. In this video, we went to the Hastings St. location to try their Northern Vietnamese specialty dish, BÚN ĐẬU PHÁT LỘC. This is an amazing sampler of deep fried tofu, blood cake sausage, deep fry young rice cake with ground shrimp and pork, slices of pork hock, vermicelli rice noodle, and fresh herbs. Best of all, they serve it with mam tom, the famed fermented shrimp sauce that gives a nuclear umami bomb of flavour. While common in Vietnam, it's pretty rare to see it on offer in Vancouver. Never seen it on offer outside of Hanoi, so we had to try it! It's funky. It's yummy. It may be an acquired taste. ;-)

Thanks for asking! Probably not this year. We spent several months in Asia last year, and we are in the planning stages of our next multi month jaunt. Right now we’re leaning towards Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. It’s a big world out there, and we’ve done several trips to Asia over the last decade (we love all of it!), so it’s time to branch out a little. South America and eastern Europe beckon as well.
