How did you know how much camber you were going to put on the board? What I mean by that is how do you know what distance the board’s arch in the middle has to be from the ground?
I actually went with a flat profile in this mold, but you can take measurements off of an existing board. The skibuilders forum (there's a ton of snowboard builders in there too) has a TON of good information, and is a good place to start reading if you want a more theoretical understanding.
hi I really admire your work for the simple and objective way, I have a project tip for the channel, I could make a tutorial of a Skimboard mold press (Flatland) since on youtube you can't even find a tutorial, following here from Brazil
watched a few of your videos, class content! Question on foam cutting,why not use hot wire method to cut the foam? Make one from thicker gauge wire and you could do the full mold width smoothly by using two templates at each side. Also way less messy
I tried a hotwire with the first mold that I made and I must have done a poor job building mine because I had a lot of problems with it. Ate through wire too. But if I could get one working properly a hotwire with templates would make things so easy
@@GoodRoads give it another shot, wire gauge and amps through the wire are quite crucial, as well as a compensator on the wire frame to make the bowing of the wire a bit more predictable.
Hey Chris, I was wondering if you could use foam board that has foil sides on it and if that works too ? And also I was wondering how wide you cut each individual piece and what glue you used to glue all of the press together ?
I've never used that foam. It might work but I worry that it might be too soft. Lately I've been gluing my slabs of foam together with spray adhesive and it's been working really well. Super fast and easy
@@GoodRoads I found some that was rated 10R ….. it has a silver foil side on it that doesn’t look like the one in your video. With the price of wood sky high these days I’m going to try your foam press idea. Your videos have been really hopeful. Thank you dude !

@@307beez Yup! If you check out my snowboard build series I pressed that board using a wood backed foam mold and it had a PTEX base. The only thing I did differently was I lined it with a sheet of aluminum to keep things smooth.
Hi good roads, very nice videos. I have a question: I started to build my snowboard and I'm building a wooden press too. I was wondering if with wood planks I need to retrim a little the top part of the mold (since the profile of a snowboard is thicker in the middle and thinner on the tip and tail
or should I keep the top part of the mold matching perfectly the bottom part and during the pressing process the wooden planks will curve a bit anyway?
I'm going to go with a wooden mold when I press the snowboard I'm working on as well, and a technique I've seen in some DIY builds is to have a sheet of some kind of crush-able or compressible material between the top of the board and the top half of the mold. A low density foam rubber, or a sheet of low density insulation foam will get crushed down by the mold and conform to the contours of you board, making sure that all your layers are clamped together evenly. I haven't tried it myself yet but that's how Signal did their DIY board, and so did David Jones over on his channel, so it definitely works

a tecnique I heard it works for the bottom profile of the mold consist on putting a thin layer of metal sheet between the bottom of the snowboard and the mold so the profile doesn't follow some "imperfections " that could still be on the bottom base of the mold even after sanding it down. As I say I did try it yet but some of guys I know did and it worked
Yeah, that's pretty standard. It also protects the mold and makes it easier to release the board after it's been pressed because you can add a wax or mold release to a steel or aluminum sheet that the epoxy won't stick to. You can pop it right off
Any hard insulation foam with an R-value of 9 or higher will work great. At Home Depot it's pink/purple, at Lowes it's green, but it's all the same stuff.
That could definitely work! It's easier to make the same cut over and over again with a router because it can follow a template, but you could definitely use a jigsaw. It just might mean more clean up work afterwards.

Drywall sanding screens work really well on insulation foam to make the mold smooth, great channel - keep the videos coming!

So basically put an old snowboard in the spot where he uses his wood template and just trace the outline onto the foam to guide you.

A flush-cut router bit that is long enough to cut through the foam, I just couldn't get one in time.

You could have used a draw knife instead of a drill bit.
Up your using the router in the wrong direction.
Jigsaw maybe?
