You could lob a shot back or lob over the net player. Hitting a drop shot, going down the alley, hitting at the net player without them destroying it is hella hard.
Believe it or not, they actually serve a purpose. Sometimes, when you don't have enough time to set your feet and step into the ball, you can jump into the backhand so your feet don't get in your way. Of course, they miss a lot more since this is much harder, as you're not really using your feet for the shot and only your upper body.
You are correct. It was the late 90’s when the style came into vogue thanks to a wave of players like Rios, grosjean, clement, and others. All the top juniors started imitating it then - thought It looked cool. It’s ok biomechaniclally but generally unnecessary. Todays young people don’t even know that lol. They think they need to do it - without ever wondering how Agassi (and even taken great 2 ganders today) got away with decades at the top without cocking his leg up like a broadway showgirl…

Mlody 27 lobbing is conceding the point. The idea is to get your opponent to lob by pinching the middle of the court and being the first team on top of the net. Lobs mean you are doing something right and your opponents don't have answers
College tennis has no manners. It’s why nobody goes. Real tennis fans can’t stand it. I went to cincy us open. And headed to Indian wells this year. Never going to a college match. Spoiled Cheaters
