Thanks Rob. I've watched all your videos on Being and Nothingness, it's really helped me regain my understanding of Sartre's existentialism, which is helping me through a tough time. Keep up the good work!

This was a great video. I read that chapter and was utterly confused. Now I'm only a little confused. Hope the next few chapters are easier

Thank you! The Immediate structures of the For-itself is in my opinion the most difficult chapter. Sartre reviews and reinforces everything he covers in the successive chapters to come so it’s good to keep moving even if you don’t feel you have the best grip on what you just read.

Couldn’t Sartre make his statements much more simpler?as it seems to be matter so simple yet ungraspable. I am currently reading this book and in every line i am puzzled. But i felt like those thoughts could be explained easily.
    Thanks for your easy explanation.

I often felt the same way reading B & N for the first time. I attribute some of the difficulty to the specificity of philosophical language, phenomenology deals with subjective experiences and that’s a very difficult subject matter to analyze. One though that occurred to me after making this video that the Yin Yang concept as a good way to describe the reflection reflecting structure.

@@robsamartino71 Even if we don't blame him for his complex way of writing we can at least blame him for making this book too long. It could have been three hundred pages shorter,as there was so many unnecessary points which he stretched pointlessly.

@@sajidahmed4332 B&N does seem unnecessarily challenging at times but I think there are rewards for readers who labor over the text. I would not describe myself as an existentialist and I have some important disagreements with Sartre’s philosophy. That being said Sartre is a philosopher that is respected and admired by those who fundamentally disagree with his ideas. I’m fact, it was the work of Roger Scruton, who is very critical of Sartre, who inspired me to study B&N. If we think casually about a concept like ‘nothingness’ we can understand how someone could write 800 pages trying to get to the bottom of it.

@@robsamartino71 Yeah,i agree here. Though sometimes quite impenetrable there are some passages that really hit hard in a profound way. And yes, there are so many things to disagree of Sartre, still his sharp intellectual instinct makes his reader to go along with him to the deepest level of existence, then we can agree or not,it is left to us. I have finished Part 1 and Part 2. Though i can't recall most of what i read, still i can feel something within me changing. Maybe because i am doubting the very nature of consciousness.

This is really really helpful but I wish you would mention the sources. What I mean is that I can tell that you mention some quotes but I wish you mentioned where I can find those quotes.

I really appreciate the effort that must have gone into making this difficult chapter clearer and the help it has given me in making sense of it. I hope you will cover the entire text as this is one of the few really good explications of Sartre's B & N on TH-cam. Do you intend to do the entire text Rob?

Yes I do. It’s taking some time but I’ll have a new video on Transcendence up in a few weeks. Thank you for the encouragement.
